Chapter 1804: A War with No Winners (Part 254)
In truth, any wizard with a sound mind present could easily see that Kingsley was deliberately pinning the blame on the Sprites.
The attackers were not Sprites at all but a group of deranged avengers led by Nelsen.
As for why Kingsley would point the finger at the Sprites, anyone with a bit of political sensitivity wouldn't find it hard to guess the reason.
Nelsen's gang of lunatics never intended to survive tonight. With everyone dead, even Kingsley, as the Minister, would have no one to seek revenge on.
Yes, most witches and wizards had heard of Nelsen's group's intentions! (They didn't exactly hide it, either.) Even though many witches and wizards didn't agree with Nelsen's extreme ideas, there was no way to stop them.
There's no shortage of people who like to talk big.
Talking about it and actually doing it are two different things.
Before tonight, how many witches and wizards had ever thought that Nelsen's group would dare to risk their lives to avenge the Death Eater remnants? Even after the event, most would only condemn them verbally, rather than risk their lives to try and stop their insane slaughter of the Death Eaters.
No one wanted to become an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
Most importantly, this incident, when spoken of, sounded terrible.
It was because Kingsley had "betrayed" Nelsen's group that there was this raging fire tonight.
Otherwise, even if driven by hatred, the avengers would only target the Death Eater remnants.
After experiencing two brutal Wizarding Wars, witches and wizards had limited sympathy for the Death Eaters, and even that sympathy was mostly limited to words.
Most people would rather see the Death Eaters, these bringers of disaster, dead, even if they hadn't personally suffered at the hands of the Death Eaters. Still, they held a grudge against Voldemort and his followers who had brought them so much misery.
So, this incident couldn't be spoken of openly; otherwise, Kingsley's hard-earned reputation would be ruined.
The best option was to pin the blame on the Sprites, giving the Ministry another reason to clean up the Sprites.
One could say it was very rational and political!
...
What happened here was only a minor episode in the turmoil of the British magical world tonight, and no one would spare any extra energy to pay attention to the changes here.
After all, everyone was busy with revenge!
Will Jones' approach was entirely different from Nelsen Tobin's.
Of course, it might also have something to do with the list he received. The Death Eaters on his list were all poor wretches without ancient manors, which meant that when they were resting, they had almost no defenses.
(This was also one of the reasons Albert established Avalon.)
Since they didn't have to stare helplessly at ancient manors protected by ancient protective magic, they could do a lot tonight. They could act as boldly as the Death Eaters once did, breaking into their homes and doing as they pleased.
Of course, Will Jones wouldn't do something as risky as that. Fighting the Death Eaters was exhilarating, but it was also extremely time-consuming, so he chose the simplest and most radical approach. He gathered a group of witches and wizards who had participated in the Second Wizarding War and still sought revenge on the Death Eaters. They directly targeted the homes of the Death Eaters on the list, continuously covering them with mass explosion spells.
They only needed to locate the targets through the Map of the Living Points, then, under the cover of night, when the Death Eaters were unaware, they would strike hard, blasting them and their houses into the sky. Even if some managed to survive, they couldn't escape the final flames.
Will and his companions followed their usual routine, setting fire to the ruins and reducing them and those beneath to ashes.
The only drawback to this method was the commotion it caused, but they always managed to flee promptly after the killings, leaving the mess for the Ministry of Magic employees who rushed to the scene.
"We're almost done!" Will declared, crossing out a name on the list with his pen and turning to his partners behind him. "Just two Death Eaters left. After we deal with them, I'll head straight to Azkaban Prison to meet with Nelsen. I'll take care of Umbridge and the remaining targets there."
"As for you all, once we're done here, it's time to get some rest." Will patted one of them on the shoulder and smiled, reminding them, "Remember to pretend like nothing happened tonight."
"Can't we go to Azkaban Prison together?"
"We all want to give Umbridge a big surprise, that toad."
They despised the Death Eaters, but they hated the source of it all even more—Umbridge, who had established the Muggle-Born Registration Commission. Everyone present wanted to get their hands on that woman.
"I'm afraid not." Will shook his head in refusal.
There was a moment of silence as everyone frowned, clearly dissatisfied.
"It seems like Kingsley's entire family is dead," Will said, raising his hand to signal for quiet and sharing the intelligence he had just received. He seemed to be in high spirits as he spoke.
Everyone's eyes widened, and their mouths hung slightly open, hardly believing the news they had just heard.
"Who... who did it?"
There were sounds of swallowing around them.
Had Nelsen killed Kingsley's entire family?
"It was probably Grell," Will chuckled. "Nelsen and I had our suspicions about him, but we never expected that guy to turn around and give us such a surprise."
"Well, you should all realize by now that after Kingsley's family is wiped out, that guy is highly unlikely to keep pretending he hasn't seen anything. If he can't take revenge on Grell, the culprit, there's a chance he'll target you all. So... there's really no need to take the risk."
"But... you don't have to..."
They opened their mouths, hesitating, as they secretly wished for Will to survive until the end.
"Nelsen's life alone isn't enough for tonight's work, and I can't let him shoulder it all alone either." Will laughed lightly, his eyes devoid of any fear of death.
In fact, if Kingsley's family hadn't been completely wiped out, Will wouldn't have minded using his own life to take them along, given the chance.
Just as Grell had once said, why should Kingsley's betrayal go unpunished? Why should he get to enjoy the fruits of their labor just because he was the Minister of Magic? But Will never expected Grell to target Kingsley's family. He and Nelsen had initially thought Grell was a spy sent by Kingsley!
"Let's go, it's time for the next one!" Will extended his hand, ready to Apparate with the group.
"We need to speed up and finish off our targets before the others fully react!"
