Chapter 180: The Plan Falls Apart
Chapter 180: The Plan Falls Apart
"Are there any more D-rank missions available for acceptance?"
Mu Yue asked the registration ninja as she entered the mission hall of the Hokage Building with her disciples.
D-rank missions were great for chakra-grinding, and with just ten of them, one could accumulate around four hundred and fifty chakra points.
"Hey, Teacher Mu Yue, why aren't we taking on any C-rank missions today?" Obito couldn't help but ask.
The previous mission had involved a life-or-death battle with ninjas from an enemy hidden village, and now they were being tasked with finding cats, catching dogs, and picking up trash. Obito felt the contrast was a bit much.
"Have you forgotten what day it is tomorrow?" Mu Yue tapped Obito on the head and said, "If we take on a mission outside the village now, Guy-sensei will have to spend his birthday alone."
This time, she didn't use the same strategy as with Itachi. After all, using the same trick would seem perfunctory. Before this, she had already mentioned to her students that Might Guy's birthday was approaching and that they would all gather to celebrate together.
"Oh yeah, Guy-sensei's birthday is coming up. I've been so busy lately that I lost track of time." Obito scratched his head and smiled sheepishly.
"It's fine. If not for Teacher Mu Yue's reminder, I would've forgotten myself." Might Guy rubbed his chin and said.
Indeed, they had been very busy lately. Before taking on missions outside the village, they were either training or constantly taking on missions within the village. And when they did go out, they had to be vigilant in protecting the clients' safety, only to rush back to the village once the mission was complete.
Kakashi glanced at Mu Yue, feeling that there was something between her and Obito and Might Guy that he didn't quite understand.
Normally, it would be unusual for a master and disciples who had been together for such a short time to be so close.
However, Kakashi considered that Mu Yue was a teacher at the Ninja Academy, and Obito and Might Guy were her students, so it was highly likely that they were already familiar with each other from their time at the Academy.
"Yes, we have more missions available." The registration ninja opened the mission scroll for Mu Yue to choose from.
D-rank missions were more or less the same, so Mu Yue randomly picked five and set out with her students to complete them.
For some reason, Obito seemed particularly competitive with Kakashi today, constantly trying to outdo him.
While they usually didn't see eye to eye, today their rivalry was more intense.
Thanks to this, the five missions Mu Yue accepted were completed quickly, as they were competing not only in speed but also in the number of tasks finished, even drawing Might Guy into their enthusiastic task-completing spree.
However, when Mu Yue checked the reward information, she noticed a problem—the rewards had decreased.
The first mission settlement was still roughly the same as before, with a total of forty-five chakra points for the three disciples. But the rewards started to drop from the third mission, with the three of them earning only thirty-plus points combined, and the fifth mission yielding a mere thirty points altogether.
While mission difficulty could influence the rewards, according to their previous experience, the difference shouldn't be this significant for D-rank missions.
A speculation formed in Mu Yue's mind: perhaps the system had determined that D-rank missions were becoming less and less helpful for her disciples' growth, and therefore reduced the rewards.
This wasn't a baseless guess. From the cultivation missions and the series of reward distributions, it was evident that the system highly valued the disciples' development. Whenever the disciples' strength increased, the system would grant stage rewards, and the more they improved during a mission, the higher the cultivation mission reward would be.
With Obito and Might Guy's current strength, D-rank missions could still be useful for familiarizing themselves with mission procedures and practicing teamwork. However, after completing dozens of them, it was clear that the benefits were diminishing.
To validate her hypothesis, Mu Yue accepted five more D-rank missions.
Upon completing them and checking the rewards, she found that they had indeed decreased further. The total reward for the tenth mission was only around twenty chakra points for the three of them combined.
"Let's do fewer D-rank missions from now on and focus our time on other tasks and training," Mu Yue thought to herself.
While it would be nice to maintain a consistent income of three hundred chakra points, the trend suggested that they might not receive any rewards at all if they continued at this pace.
After submitting all the missions, Mu Yue took her students home for dinner.
Tobirama also noticed something peculiar—the man who resembled Mu Yue, the jonin named Minato Namikaze, had come to her house again and was taking away packed meals, just like before.
"Teacher Mu Yue, what's your relationship with that Namikaze Minato? It seems like he comes to your house for meals every day," Tobirama asked curiously.
He felt a strange sense of unease that he couldn't quite put into words. It would be odd for mere neighbors to eat together every day, let alone Minato taking meals to go.
"We're very good friends, and we're also each other's teachers. He teaches me sealing jutsu, and I teach him cooking," Mu Yue replied after some thought.
"We used to eat together, and occasionally, he would cook for me. But now he's very busy, so we rarely get to sit down and eat together," she added.
"Why would someone so busy still come to pick up packed meals?" Kakashi found this illogical.
"Of course, it's because Teacher Mu Yue's cooking is just too delicious! Even if there's no time to eat together, one must take the food to go if given the chance," Tobirama nodded in agreement, thinking that Minato was making the right choice.
Kakashi had an urge to refute him, but then he recalled the taste of Mu Yue's cooking from earlier, and it didn't seem so illogical after all.
"Tomorrow morning, we'll have our usual training. The afternoon and evening are free for you to plan," Mu Yue announced after dinner, sharing the next day's schedule.
As the disciples prepared to leave, Mu Yue called out to Might Guy specifically.
"Guy, wait a moment before you leave."
Might Guy obediently turned back and sat down.
"I'll walk back with you. I have something to discuss with your father," Mu Yue explained with a smile after tidying up.
"Okay, my father should be home at this time," Might Guy nodded in response.
He had been wondering if it was about training or his birthday, but he didn't expect it to involve his father.
By now, the sun had completely set, and the moon reigned supreme in the night sky.
Might Guy's home was in a remote location. As they ventured deeper into his neighborhood, human voices grew scarce, giving way to the vibrant sounds of nature.
"I'm home!" Might Guy announced as he opened the door.
"Teacher Mu Yue is here too; she has something to discuss with you," he added.
"Oh, is Teacher Mu Yue here? I'll brew a pot of tea then," Might Dai promptly responded, stepping out to greet them.
"Don't bother; I'm here to discuss something with you, Elder Dai. I won't stay long," Mu Yue smiled and declined.
Despite Mu Yue's refusal, Might Guy insisted on boiling water and brewing tea.
"Elder Dai, do you want to become an even higher-level ninja?" Mu Yue asked straightforwardly.
Based on her analysis of Might Guy, she knew that improving his father's situation would be a more thoughtful gift than any expensive present.
