Chapter 18: Would You Be Willing to Be This Commander's Wife?
Chapter 18: Would You Be Willing to Be This Commander's Wife?
"Miss! Miss!"
Banxia cried as she chased after her.
A young woman brushed past her and stumbled inside, rushing towards the wailing child.
The child was being comforted by Madam Wang, who was holding his hand gently.
The woman immediately knelt before Madam Wang, overflowing with gratitude. "Thank you, Madam, for saving my son!"
Madam Wang quickly replied, "It wasn't me who saved your son, it was the General's wife!"
The woman hugged her son tightly and looked around. She spotted Lu Lingxiao in his armor and Lin Wan'er veiled beside him. Assuming that the veiled woman was the general's wife, she hurried over with her son to express her gratitude.
"Thank you, General's wife..."
One of the wives present glared at Lin Wan'er and coldly interjected, "She's not the General's wife! The real General's wife risked her life to save this child and all of us. She was captured by two Northern Liang spies!"
"Yes! How dare a coward who only thinks of herself claim to be the General's wife?"
"She sure put on a show earlier. Why didn't she speak up and claim to be the General's wife when it mattered?"
From the moment Meng Qianqian bravely stepped forward, no one doubted her identity anymore.
These words were not only directed at the woman and Lin Wan'er but also at Lu Lingxiao.
Your wife put herself in danger, and instead of rescuing her first, you chose to save another woman...
Lu Lingxiao was perplexed as he hadn't witnessed what had transpired earlier. However, upon hearing from the wives that Meng Qianqian had saved the child and all of them, he was astonished.
That timid little girl barely had the courage to protect herself, so how could she possibly confront the Northern Liang spies?
Perhaps there was some misunderstanding?
Now wasn't the time to investigate the matter. The urgent task at hand was to capture the Northern Liang spies and rescue Meng Qianqian.
"I'll go rescue her. You head back first."
Without waiting for a response, Lu Lingxiao turned and strode away.
Lin Wan'er tried to hold him back, but she couldn't.
As Lu Lingxiao reached the main street, he encountered Banxia, who was lying on the ground with a bleeding head wound. He pulled her up to her feet.
Banxia pushed him away and sobbed loudly, "Stay away from me! You let my miss be captured! You saved a vixen instead of my miss... I hate you, Sir! I hate you!"
Lu Lingxiao frowned but didn't argue.
Banxia suddenly knelt down, her voice filled with despair and anguish as she begged, "Sir... please... bring Miss back... no matter what, she's still your wife..."
Lu Lingxiao tightened his grip on his sword hilt and vowed, "I will bring her back."
Meanwhile, the two Northern Liang spies who had captured Meng Qianqian quickly hijacked a horse carriage.
The less injured spy drove the carriage while Meng Qianqian and the other spy sat inside, with his long sword pressed against her neck.
"Brother, Lu Lingxiao saved another woman earlier. I fear she might be the real General's wife! This girl here is of no value to us, and she's only a burden. We should just kill her!"
Letting her go was out of the question. There was a decade-long enmity between Northern Liang and Great Zhou, and they would never show mercy to the people of Great Zhou!
As he drove the carriage swiftly, the less injured spy asked, "Brother, why aren't you saying anything?"
"Something's not right!" the severely injured spy said.
"What's not right, brother?"
The injured spy lifted the carriage curtain and gazed at the empty street. "It's too quiet. When has this street ever been this peaceful?"
Upon hearing his brother's words, the less injured spy also sensed that something was amiss. Moreover, in broad daylight, he suddenly felt a chill run down his spine as if... some dangerous presence was drawing near.
“Stop the carriage!”
The severely injured man shouted, his voice filled with authority.
The less injured spy hastily pulled on the reins with all his might, bringing the horse carriage to a halt.
Just a hair's breadth away from his nose, a thin silken thread became visible in the sunlight.
This was a unique hidden weapon of the Jinyiwei, capable of cutting through iron as if it were mud.
Had they recklessly charged forward just now, both the spies and the carriage would have been sliced in two.
He felt a chill run through his body, and cold sweat broke out on his palms and soles. “B-Brother…”
He was terrified, his voice stuttering in fear.
At that moment, he heard a casual laugh. Looking forward, he saw a purple figure appearing out of thin air on the empty street.
Seated on an elaborately carved official hat chair, his underlings served as his footrest, unmoving.
He had a strikingly beautiful face, a pair of phoenix eyes brimming with a mix of mirth and danger, and a slight upward curve to his lips, exuding a rebellious aura.
By his side stood several Jinyiwei guards dressed in flying fish uniforms.
From within the carriage, a dull voice spoke, “So it’s the Grand Preceptor. What a pleasant surprise.”
Lu Yun’s mocking tone held a hint of disdain. “What business does the Grand Preceptor have with us Northern Liang men? Kill them.”
The Jinyiwei guards responded with a fist to their chests. “Yes!”
“Wait!”
The man inside the carriage pulled back the curtain and pushed Meng Qianqian out, holding a dagger to her throat. He threatened, “If you dare to harm either of us, I’ll take her with me to the grave!”
Lu Yun smiled. “What does the life of a woman have to do with me?”
The Northern Liang spy pressed the blade closer. “She’s the wife of the Northern Defense General, Lu Lingxiao!”
“You said she’s Lu Lingxiao’s wife, not mine.”
Lu Yun’s eyes, holding a smile that wasn’t quite a smile, landed on Meng Qianqian’s calm and serene face. “Why don’t you ask her if she’s willing to be my wife? If she agrees, I’ll let you two go today for her sake.”
“Unwilling.”
Meng Qianqian’s reply was calm and firm.
Lu Yun turned to the spy holding the dagger, his palms raised in a helpless gesture, his smile widening. “You heard her.”
The less injured spy threw down the reins, drew his sword, and exclaimed, “Brother! Don’t waste time talking to this brat. I’ll hold them off while you escape!”
The man inside the carriage glared at Lu Yun, his eyes filled with determination. “I want to see if you truly don’t care about the lives of the people of Great Zhou!”
He aimed at Meng Qianqian’s hand and slashed down with his sword!
Meng Qianqian didn’t dodge; she sat quietly in the carriage.
Whoosh!
An arrow cut through the air, piercing the spy’s temple. His eyes widened in disbelief as he toppled off the carriage.
Enraged, the less injured spy shouted, “Brother—I’ll fight them to the death!”
He leaped into the air, soaring over the hidden silken thread, and thrust his sword at Lu Yun with all his might!
Archers hiding on the rooftops pulled back their bows, releasing three arrows in quick succession.
Clang!
A faint sound of collision seemed to echo in the air as one of the arrows, aimed at a vital spot, deviated by a hair’s breadth at an almost imperceptible angle.
The Northern Liang spy was sent flying and crashed heavily to the ground, spitting out a mouthful of blood.
The Jinyiwei commander walked over, retrieved the silken thread, and knelt down to inspect the man’s injury. Smiling, he said to the archer, “I didn’t think you could miss, but fortunately, you did, or we wouldn’t have been able to keep this man alive.”
The archer furrowed his brows, perplexed.
He… had missed?
