Chapter 18: Don't Ask, It's an Explosion (Part 1)
There was no dealing with this chatty goat-headed creature, so Leon had no choice but to carry the incessantly babbling goat head with a scowl on his face. He hurried through the dimly lit corridors of the Cleanup Bureau, passing by offices with nameplates hanging outside.
Harry Morgan (Level 2 Crisis Handler)
Emma Arman (Level 1 Disaster Handler)
Leon Ryan (Level 3 Accident Handler)... Ah, this must be the place. Speaking of which, his office was right next to Senior Emma's!
Leon's lips curled up unconsciously as he glanced at the familiar name on the nameplate next door. Of course, this didn't imply any romantic interest in her; it was simply a pleasant surprise to have a kind, beautiful, and reliable senior colleague right next door during his initial days on the job... Hmm? Was something flashing in her office?
Through the small window on the corridor side, Leon caught a glimpse of strange flashes of light inside Emma's office, which piqued his curiosity. He took a step back and peered inside, only to immediately return with a blank expression and a tense face as he entered his own office.
On Emma's desk, there lay a massive scythe, nearly three meters long, its curved blade covered in brown rust. The flashing light he had seen was the sunlight reflecting off the scythe's blade.
Contrary to his expectations, her office wasn't adorned with interesting greenery, elegant clothing, or cute children's items. Instead, it was filled with all sorts of odd and even frightening objects.
Bloodstained bandages, damaged mallets, an old open coffin, a leather-bound book of questionable origin, bone specimens of unidentified creatures, and even half of a guillotine blade leaning against the wall—the kind that, when raised to a great height and released, would fall with a loud 'crack' as the executioner cut the ropes.
Well, Senior Emma might have a gentle personality, but the unique nature of the Cleanup Bureau's work seemed to allow her gentleness to exist only in her character.
Leon vividly remembered the previous night when he had rushed to the Special Care Ward; he had even seen the fingerprints she had left on the sturdy metal corner cabinet, created by her sheer hand strength.
After reinforcing his decision to never provoke her, Leon searched his own office and successfully found the large suitcase in the spot the red-haired director had mentioned, almost identical to Senior Emma's.
The suitcase had brass-colored metal bumpers, a wide and sturdy solid wood frame covered in a tough animal skin with a crocodile-like pattern. Despite its simple and unadorned exterior, lacking the engraved flowers and metal buckles common in modern suitcases, one touch was enough to know that the solid materials used guaranteed an expensive price tag.
The only decorative element on the entire exterior of the suitcase was the golden emblem imprinted on the side of the metal handle padding—the symbol of the Virgin Cleanup Bureau: a dung beetle queen pushing a ball of feces.
The interior of the suitcase featured multiple custom-fitted compartments, with the leftmost one, marked by two horns, clearly reserved for the Black Sheep. Next to it was a disassembled long-range nail gun and six silver-white air cylinders the size of melons.
Upon seeing this familiar "big sniper rifle," Leon's heart warmed. He knew that Emma had given it to him.
She had been very considerate towards him, even after completing their investigation the previous day. Instead of dealing with the bloodstains on her body, she had pulled him aside for a long chat, sharing many details about the "cleanup work" and repeatedly emphasizing areas that required extra caution.
And now, on the eve of their mission, she had specifically left her weapon for him... This favor was too great a debt to owe. When she needed help, he would redouble his efforts to repay her kindness!
Leon, filled with gratitude, set up the suitcase and forcefully shoved the grumbling Black Sheep into the designated slot for the goat head, then firmly closed the lid.
Something strange happened. In the instant the large suitcase was closed, it was as if everything had been choked off. The annoying noises by his ear and the cursing in his mind all disappeared in an instant, and the entire world quieted down.
Perfect. With this thing, I can take the Black Sheep out without worrying about it talking nonsense and scaring Anna.
Satisfied, Leon nodded and reached for the suitcase's handle, pulling it with all his might!
Not a budge...
???
Looking at the large suitcase that didn't even bother to wobble, Leon couldn't help but widen his eyes. He grabbed the oversized handle with both hands and pulled with all his strength, determined to move it.
Finally, the massive suitcase reacted to Leon's efforts, but it only lifted slightly off the ground before falling back down with a loud thud. The impact caused the dust in the entire office to stir.
"..."
Solid wood frame, crocodile-like leather, metal fittings, and inside was a sheep's head and a large sniper rifle... If this thing didn't weigh at least fifty or sixty kilograms, I'd eat this suitcase right now!
Looking at his own arms, thin from long-term malnutrition, and then at the unmoving suitcase lying on the ground as if mocking him. Leon, who was "weak and petite," sighed helplessly. He rationally abandoned the idea of taking it with him and instead grabbed his ID, pushed the door open with a scowl, and headed towards the police department cafeteria.
Eat! I'm going to eat like crazy! I'll eat until I become a strongman! Then, I'll start working out intensively! If nothing else, I'll train until I can carry this suitcase on my own!
Otherwise, when Senior Emma asks for my help, if I can't even lift a suitcase, I'll have to ask her for help with a long face. What kind of life would that be?
..."
"Anna... burp... look what I brought for you."
Pushing open the door to the intensive care unit, he saw the weak adolescent girl on the bed looking at him with surprise and joy. Unconsciously, a smile appeared on Leon's face as well.
He lifted the cedar lunch box in his hand and gently shook it. Before Anna could respond, Leon revealed the surprise with a smile:
"It's the silver cod soup you loved as a child! I specifically asked, and this cod was caught in the river this morning, and fresh milk was added to it!"
Silver cod and milk... that must be expensive.
Hearing Leon's words, Anna hesitated and said:
"Brother, you just started your job yesterday, and now you're helping me change rooms and bringing such expensive soup. Isn't this a bit..."
"Don't worry about any of this. All you need to do now is rest and recover... Come, let me see your leg."
Putting down the three-tiered lunch box he borrowed from the police cafeteria on the bedside table, Leon lifted a corner of the blanket and examined his sister's bandaged right thigh with concern.
"Does it hurt? I'm so sorry. If I hadn't brought you to this hospital, this wouldn't have happened..."
"It doesn't hurt! Hey!"
Leon's quick action surprised the weak girl, and she couldn't help but blush. She quickly reached out to grab the blanket and cover her thigh again, then grabbed his arm and scolded him:
"Brother! My skirt was cut open during the bandaging. Don't go rummaging around! And stop blaming yourself for everything!
When you brought me here, you didn't know the gas pipeline would suddenly explode. It was just an accident, and it's not your fault!"
