Chapter 1798: A War Without Victors (Part 248)
Chapter 1798: A War Without Victors (Part 248)
Deep within a hidden underground cave in a secluded part of Britain, a fairy village known only to the fairies themselves was nestled. A secret meeting, attended by a select few high-ranking members of the fairy race, was quietly taking place in this concealed location.
"We have no other choice..."
Bodrick, the leader of the Goblin Brotherhood, was expressing his views on the ongoing conflict.
"No, we shouldn't have started this damn war. It will only lead to heavy losses among our already small population."
Bodrick's opinion clearly didn't resonate with all the fairies present. Legnack, a moderate among them, despised the idea of dragging the fairies into a meaningless war.
Not only would the Wizarding War claim fairy lives, but the fairies had suffered devastating defeats in the previous two conflicts, and this time would likely be no exception.
However, unlike the previous two 'Goblin Wars', this time, the ambitious Minister of Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt, was determined to make his mark. If the fairies lost, not only would they suffer significant casualties, but Gringotts would also have to make concessions to the wizarding world in various aspects.
This would result in a substantial loss of authority and credibility for the fairies, something they were unwilling to accept.
Therefore, Legnack believed that instead of initiating a war they couldn't possibly win, it would be wiser to use their bargaining chips to negotiate with the Ministry of Magic, thus easing tensions and preserving the fairies' current interests.
However, the radical Goblin Brotherhood, one of the organizers of this meeting, disagreed. Bodrick, with his distinctive squint, argued that weakness only invited oppression. He was about to reveal the challenges the fairies would soon face.
"I suggest you abandon your unrealistic fantasies. We've dealt with wizards for so long, and all fairies know how arrogant they can be. Compromising won't get us what we want."
Bodrick's words resonated with the other fairies.
"According to the latest information, the Ministry of Magic's patience with us has reached its limit, especially after that wizard, Albert Anderson, left Britain. They are eager to launch an all-out war against us. So, Legnack, do you want us to die under the insults from the wizards?"
"That's absurd, Bodrick. You should know that British wizards have just ended their second Wizarding War, and they certainly don't want another one. Plus, it's unlikely that we are their..."
Before Legnack could finish, he was betrayed by his fellow fairies.
Yes, the unfortunate Legnack met his end at the hands of his own kind, killed by fairy magic.
In his final moments, Legnack never imagined he would die at the hands of his colleagues.
"I regret this!"
Bodrick sheathed his wand and spoke in a calm tone, "A Ministry wizard tried to stop peace and murdered poor Legnack."
Astonishingly, this blatant lie gained the support of the fairies present, and they all hypocritically agreed to avenge Legnack before quietly returning to the topic.
"I understand Legnack, but..."
"Enough, Bodrick. Let's get to the point!"
Bodrick's speech was interrupted by the surrounding fairies.
"If we are willing to pay the price and engage in an all-out war with British wizards, what will we gain from it?
"A senior executive from Gringotts spoke up and asked."
"This is the main reason why the goblins gathered here today. Legnak, a moderate who opposed war with wizards, died without any injustice!"
"It's unlikely, no, we can't get anything we want from the wizards," Bodrick said, glancing at the other goblin.
"Are you joking?"
All the goblins glared at Bodrick. Who would start a war without benefits or incentives?
"Are you out of your mind?"
This was the biggest issue.
"I'm not joking, no, I'm not," Bodrick said calmly, scanning the other goblins in the room. "The Goblin Brotherhood was established to try and give goblins a voice through other means, to help our kind gain more rights from the wizards."
"Bodrick, we're not here to discuss this with you," an elderly goblin shouted.
"No, we are here to talk about this," Bodrick said coldly. "Ever since the time of Voldemort's rule, the goblins' situation has become increasingly awkward. Look at that damn Kingsley Shacklebolt, he's planning to emulate Voldemort and encroach upon Gringotts' interests."
When Bodrick brought this up, the other goblins fell silent.
"Once we show weakness and retreat, the wizards will take advantage and push us further," Bodrick said with a cold smile, looking around at the crowd. "As you all know, there has always been a group of wizards who view us as inferior beings, even planning to enslave us like house-elves."
"Enough, Bodrick, you know we don't want to hear this," a goblin snapped.
"If you won't listen, others will," Bodrick said, his tone turning fervent. "I'll use this excuse to convince other goblins. I believe no goblin would want our kind to degenerate into pitiful house-elves, cruelly enslaved by wizards."
Although this statement was a bit exaggerated, most of it was true. They had to resist and let all wizards know that goblins were not to be trifled with; otherwise, with the wizards' greed, they would not stop at just encroaching upon Gringotts' interests.
"Don't try to change the subject, Bodrick!" an elderly wizard glared at him.
"What about sharing the secrets and usage rights of the wizards' wands?" Bodrick brought up the excuse from the previous two goblin wars.
The goblins had already been secretly researching wands suitable for their use, but their wand-making skills were mediocre compared to Garrick Ollivander, the professional wandmaker, and they couldn't openly use them.
"We have no chance of defeating the wizards, and even if we could, other wizards would not allow it," an elderly goblin suddenly said.
"I know, and I never thought of defeating the British Ministry of Magic. We just need... to make the wizards bow to us," Bodrick said, outlining his plan to the other goblins.
The wizarding world was also in turmoil. Bodrick intended to detonate the time bomb behind the British wizards, putting them in a two-front war and forcing them to make concessions to the goblins, thus gaining greater benefits for the goblin kind.
