Chapter 179
Chapter 179
One of the Dark Lord's lifelong wishes was...
Ivan kept muttering to himself, but he was surprised by Tom Riddle's concern for the Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
Tom Riddle didn't mind that Ivan hadn't replied, and continued to complain in his diary.
"Why would Dumbledore choose such a person to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts?"
Having been around Ivan and having interacted with Lockhart a few times, Tom Riddle easily saw through the new professor's true nature.
All show and no substance, obsessed with self-promotion, completely a self-important, incompetent fool.
The only thing that puzzled Tom was how this man managed to write those best-selling books and gain public recognition.
"I think you would do a better job teaching than this guy", Tom wrote at the end of the diary.
It was both a jest and a sign of Tom's respect and admiration for the young wizard in front of him.
In their past discussions about studies, Tom had come to understand that Ivan's grasp of basic spells was not inferior to that of a normal adult wizard.
Although he was still a ways off from being a professor, he was certainly better than the incompetent Lockhart.
Ivan, however, didn't agree with Tom's comments at all.
He knew that whoever took this position was bound to suffer, and he thought Tom must be trying to secretly sabotage him.
Just as Ivan was thinking this, the System's notification rang in his mind.
"Ding, Activated Quest: The Dark Lord's Wish
Quest Objective: Tom Riddle directly or indirectly teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts
Quest Reward: Legendary Points * 1
Quest Description: One of Voldemort's wishes was to become a professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts. However, when he made this request with great anticipation, Headmaster Dumbledore immediately rejected him!
Frustrated and angry, Voldemort transformed this obsession into a Curse, ensuring that no teacher of this class could last more than a year!"
The sudden Quest notification surprised Ivan. He had never known that Voldemort had such a wish.
In his previous life, while watching "Harry Potter", Ivan had assumed that Voldemort wanted to teach at the school to spread his evil ideology or to steal the Four Founders' relics to create Horcruxes, satisfying his collecting obsession.
He hadn't considered that the Dark Lord might genuinely want to be a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
But upon further reflection, Ivan thought it made sense. If Voldemort didn't have a deep resentment towards this position, there would be no need for him to place such a powerful Curse here.
The Curse was specific: it ensured that each year, the professor of this class would be driven away, though the process was often violent and resulted in some casualties.
Could Voldemort be thinking that one day, when Dumbledore had no one else to recruit, he would remember the Snake-Faced Youth he had once driven away?
Ivan maliciously speculated in his mind, but he was also puzzled. If Voldemort had such a Curse, why hadn't he used it again?
Why not Curse the position of Headmaster, Curse the school to collapse, or even Curse Dumbledore himself?
Ivan thought perhaps this Curse had certain conditions to be activated?
Could it only be used once in a lifetime? Or did it require an extremely strong obsession with something?
Looking at the diary in front of him, Ivan had a thought. Why not ask the person himself?
With that in mind, Ivan picked up his quill, dipped it in ink, and wrote.
I heard from the Upper-year students that the Defense Against the Dark Arts class has been cursed. Tom, do you know anything about curses?
Ivan was very interested in the reward of those Legendary Points.
If there was a way to break the curse, Ivan wouldn't mind applying for the position of assistant in the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, and then use the Horcrux to help him prepare for the Quest.
Moreover, he was also very interested in such a powerful curse. It seemed even Dumbledore couldn't do much about it, otherwise, it would have been resolved long ago.
Unfortunately, after waiting for a while, Tom humbly replied in the diary:
"Curses? I don't have much experience in this area, so I can't teach you."
Ivan didn't believe it at all, but for the moment, he had no way to deal with Tom.
Last time when he asked about Fiendfyre, Tom also refused to talk about it, saying he didn't know. Perhaps he was worried that if Ivan learned Fiendfyre, he might use it to burn him.
Unable to remove the curse, Ivan had no choice but to reluctantly set aside this Quest.
He couldn't hand over the Horcrux to Lockhart and let Tom control Professor Lockhart in the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, could he?
Although Lockhart's recent behavior annoyed Ivan, he didn't intend to deliberately harm him.
More importantly, such actions could lead to unpredictable consequences. Accidentally reviving Tom would be disastrous.
All these concerns made Ivan look at the diary with increasing displeasure.
Fortunately, the Horcrux was becoming less useful to Ivan, and he had a new learning plan. So he decided to put Tom on ice for a while, letting the bastard cool off.
With that thought, Ivan put the diary in his pocket and took out the tattered Advanced Potion-Making to read. After a couple of minutes, the System notification sounded in his mind:
"Ding, after some time of study, your Potions proficiency has improved. Current Potions level 4 (1467/1600)."
Ivan was taken aback for a moment, then he looked at the book with renewed enthusiasm. He felt that if he finished reading this book, his Potions level might reach five.
After a half-day of classes, Ivan returned to the Great Hall for lunch.
Beside him, Harry was complaining about the boring morning classes. "Does Lockhart do anything besides tell stories?"
"Yes!" Ron said, biting into a crisp biscuit. "I heard that in another class, Lockhart brought in a cage of Cornish Pixies for everyone to catch."
"What happened?" Ivan put down his textbook, curious.
"They went out of control, and Lockhart ended up hanging from the ceiling, caught by a group of pixies. It was Professor Mcgonagall who arrived in time to free him!" Ron shook his head regretfully, thinking it must have been quite amusing, but he didn't get to see it.
"No wonder", Ivan muttered. He had wondered why Lockhart had stopped causing trouble and started telling stories. It turned out he had already made a fool of himself once.
Ron was about to continue with more stories about Lockhart, but when he saw Hermione approaching, Ivan quickly told him to shut up, otherwise, they would start arguing again.
