Chapter 179: Zhang Yu's Thunderous Strike
Under the same night sky.
On the outskirts of the city, in a narrow alleyway, Zhang Yu and Bai Zhenzhen stood side by side, their gazes piercing through the rain-wreathed darkness toward a dilapidated apartment building in the distance.
Bai Zhenzhen asked, “Are you sure it’s here?”
Fujie snorted. “Hmph. An Evil God hiding in plain sight like this? How could it possibly control Rituals as well as I do? And I didn’t just guess—it was my own Shadow Pest, sent through the target’s own network, that led me straight here. No mistake.”
“Hurry up. I distracted those fools with false intel, but if they realize something’s wrong, they’ll be back fast.”
Zhang Yu nodded. “Then I’ll go first.”
In an instant, his muscles writhed and trembled, his body subtly shrinking and twisting. His facial features shifted, transforming into a completely unfamiliar face.
Then, clad in the deliveryman outfit he had prepared earlier, Zhang Yu slipped into the crumbling apartment building.
The exterior was battered, the hallway dimly lit, piled high with clutter. Zhang Yu scanned the cracks in the stairs where moss had taken root, catching a faint, lingering stench in the air. The entire building exuded an old, rotten aura.
Even the surveillance system had long since failed—worn-out wiring and deliberate sabotage by the Evil God’s cultists had rendered it useless. But because rent was cheap, the building was densely packed with residents, a chaotic mix of people from all walks of life.
Zhang Yu thought to himself: The Evil God deliberately chose such a run-down, ancient place. Perfect for our operation today.
He stopped at Room 606, pressed the doorbell—no answer.
He pressed again, then called out, “Anyone home? Package’s here.”
“I’m in a rush. I’ll just leave it at the door. You can pick it up later.”
With that, Zhang Yu snapped a photo of the parcel, then walked away like any ordinary deliveryman.
Not long after he left, Li Quan cracked open the door, peered left and right, and only after confirming no one was around did he cautiously approach the cardboard box at the entrance.
The address on the label matched.
He brought it inside and called out, “Master, your package’s arrived.”
“Oh?” Huo Shan bounced over with a squeal. “Is it the new mouse I ordered online? Hurry up and open it!”
Inside the room, besides the Evil God Huo Shan and his loyal follower Li Quan, a broad-shouldered man with a dark complexion lay sprawled on the sofa, inhaling Daoxin Buffer with deep, contented breaths.
Li Quan and the black-faced man were both high school graduates, long past their peak Qi Refinement stage. They were among Huo Shan’s most devoted disciples, always guarding his safety. Even when Song Xu had led a raid to seize the Ten Million, they had remained at his side.
Now, Li Quan tore open the package in seconds—only to find a high school general education math textbook inside.
“What the hell?” Huo Shan growled. “Did the store send the wrong item? I’m filing a complaint!”
At that moment, the distant wail of police sirens echoed through the night, growing louder by the second.
Huo Shan and his two disciples flinched. They rushed to the window, scanning the street below.
As Evils Gods and their cultists, they were hypersensitive to such disturbances.
When the police car came to a stop right beneath the building, their anxiety spiked.
“Could this be… for me?”
Li Quan reassured him. “Besides the police, I see security personnel from Xianyun Group. It must be a company matter. Not our problem.”
Huo Shan exhaled in relief—then froze.
Suddenly, a thought struck him.
The sharp, rhythmic knocking at the door snapped him back to reality.
For all his long hours of lazy indulgence, the instinct of an Evil God hadn’t been entirely erased. Instinctively, he snatched the math book from the table.
He flipped through it frantically—then his eyes widened in horror.
Buried within the pages was a martial technique known as Chunqiu Wujin Chan.
“Damn it! Who’s trying to ruin me?!”
At that very moment, voices echoed from outside.
“Routine inspection. Open up and cooperate.”
A security guard added, “You hear that burning smell?”
The police officer’s voice grew urgent. “We suspect you’re involved in illegal Technique distribution. If you don’t open the door immediately, we’ll break it down!”
The three men felt their blood run cold. Panic surged through them—like ants on a hot skillet.
“Damn it…” Huo Shan seethed under his breath. “Pour oil on it! Take it to the gas stove and light it!”
“Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! If we get caught, it’ll be a massive fine!”
“Every burned character reduces the penalty!”
“Li Quan—go out there and stall them! Buy time!”
The knocking intensified. The warnings grew louder.
Zhang Yu, still hidden in the alley, watched through the shadows as the book finally burst into flames.
Huo Shan stared at the charred remains in the metal bucket, finally exhaling—until a voice called out.
“Captain, something was just burned here!”
All eyes turned to the bucket.
As the security personnel searched through the ashes, Huo Shan’s heart sank.
Then, one of them pulled out a palm-sized metal shard from the smoldering debris.
Huo Shan’s eyes widened.
Someone slipped a metal plate into the book.
His mind reeled. Who the hell is doing this? This is brutal. I’m done for this time…
He already began calculating whether to abandon his two disciples.
The security officer examined the engraving on the shard, his face paling. “It’s Chunqiu Wujin Chan… a top-tier Expert-Level Cultivation Technique.”
The police officers recoiled instantly, afraid to even glance at the shard.
The security team quickly sealed it in a container.
“Gentlemen,” the lead officer said, “we suspect you purchased a pirated Technique. Please come with us for questioning.”
……
In the alley below, Zhang Yu leaned against the wall, now back in his original disguise, watching as Li Quan and the other man were led into a Xianyun Group vehicle.
The cars sped off into the night, vanishing into the rain-drenched darkness.
Zhang Yu sighed. “An anonymous tip… actually worked? Even better than I expected.”
Fujie smirked. “Of course. This isn’t just any Technique—Chunqiu Wujin Chan? The moment word leaked, those corporate dogs would’ve smelled it like vultures on carrion.”
Zhang Yu replayed the scene in his mind. Those two were definitely disciples.
Fujie chuckled. “That’s the power of information asymmetry. Just knowing their location while they have no idea we know it—that’s all we need to crush them.”
But Zhang Yu remained cautious.
The company could fine them, and that would be the end of it. Or even if the disciples were sacrificed, the Evil God himself was still out there.
Zhang Yu stared at the apartment building. Theoretically, all the disciples in that room should’ve been taken by now.
But…
After a pause, he decided to test it one more time.
He pulled out his phone and placed an order for takeout.
Minutes later, a blur streaked through the air. A deliveryman appeared at the door of Room 606, holding a drink, like a phantom in the rain.
He paused at the door—gaped at the violently broken lock.
“Hello? Anyone here?”
No answer.
He checked the delivery note, sighed in frustration, then swept the room with a swift, wind-like motion.
Then, stepping back out, he pulled out his phone and typed:
> I checked the whole place—no one’s inside. What should I do with the order?
The reply came instantly:
> Thanks for your effort. He’s not home—just keep the drink.
Not long after the deliveryman left, the bear doll on the sofa twitched.
It hopped down from the couch—then froze.
No… what if… what if this whole thing was a trap? What if they’re waiting outside, luring me into the open?
Can’t go out like this.
Without disciples to protect me, I’m at my most vulnerable. I need to do something else…
With that, the bear doll sent a message to Song Xu and the others.
At their speed, they’ll be here in less than twenty minutes.
All I need is to stay hidden for that long.
Then, Huo Shan walked to the wall behind the sofa, slowly slid open a hidden panel, and vanished into the darkness.
