Chapter 179: The Deceased is the River God Asopos
Chapter 179: The Deceased is the River God Asopos
"The scent of the mortal world is truly refreshing. The Underworld is indeed no place for humans; this life is so much better in comparison."
Qin Muye muttered as he arrived in the mortal world. While he hadn't noticed much when he was here before, now that he had returned from the Underworld, he suddenly found the flowers more beautiful, the trees more picturesque, and even the people—well, the people couldn't quite compare. The nymphs and Underworld gods were like works of art, far surpassing mortals.
Of course, there were a few exceptions. Otherwise, Zeus wouldn't have been able to cause so much trouble. While Zeus might not be picky about his preferences, he still had standards when it came to looks.
He was sent back by the god of sleep, Hypnos. Normally, it would be the god of death, Thanatos, who would send him, but since Thanatos was missing, Hypnos had to step in.
Glancing back, he wasn't sure whose grave he had emerged from. To put it more delicately, he had come out of Persephone's room.
"Why is there a charred corpse here? It looks familiar."
Qin Muye suddenly noticed a body. This was not a mortal's body, but a Titan's.
"Who did this, and how audacious?"
"It doesn't look like it was burned, but more like it was struck by lightning."
Qin Muye examined the area. The corpse was at the center of a chaotic scene.
When it came to lightning, one couldn't help but think of a certain king of the gods, the only one who wielded thunder.
In other words, Qin Muye suspected that Zeus had killed this person. As for why, he didn't know. Perhaps Thanatos would know.
'It can't be that he saw Zeus forcing himself on Thanatos and was killed to keep him quiet. That would be too coincidental.'
Qin Muye inwardly scoffed. It was hard not to make such a connection.
As for the idea that the corpse was Thanatos, that was even more unlikely. Even if Zeus had an inappropriate desire, he wouldn't dare do something so absurd.
Without Thanatos to guide the dead, the mortal world would be in chaos.
Moreover, Qin Muye doubted that Zeus could even kill Thanatos. The god of death was of extraordinary origin and power.
So, Qin Muye decided to ignore the charred corpse. He had no reason to take it and invite trouble.
This was clearly a case where someone knew too much and had to be silenced. Why get involved?
"This seems to be near the Kingdom of Corinth. I might as well check on Aladdin," Qin Muye thought as he identified his location. He recognized a nearby rock formation where Zeus, in the form of an eagle, had seduced a daughter of the river god Asopos in broad daylight, with Qin Muye and Sisyphus as witnesses.
That scene had broadened his horizons and refreshed his three views, leaving an unforgettable impression.
So, this made him realize one thing: never marry a Titan.
Following his memory, he soon arrived in Corinth, which was still bustling.
He didn't bother to gather information on the way and went straight to the palace.
Inquiring wouldn't do much good; if he wanted to know something, it was better to ask directly.
Just as he was announcing his presence, Sisyphus rushed over, looking somewhat peculiar, as if he were afraid his wife, Merope, would discover he had an affair with his father-in-law.
While the analogy was a bit strange, his expression was indeed like that.
"What's wrong?" Qin Muye asked, eyeing the mysterious Sisyphus.
If there was nothing wrong, he'd spell his name backward.
"Ah, I wonder, how is your relationship with the god of death, Thanatos?" Sisyphus inquired.
"It's fine, why do you ask? He's always busy with work and doesn't chat much," Qin Muye answered truthfully.
If not for Thanatos's disappearance, he wouldn't have had the chance to chat with other Underworld gods.
"That's good. Come with me, I want to show you something," Sisyphus said after hearing Qin Muye's response.
"???" Qin Muye felt a headache coming on. "What strange thing do you plan to show me?"
He had a feeling something was off.
But he didn't think Sisyphus would betray him. He was now quite powerful, and if Sisyphus tried anything, he would show him what a big troublemaker he could be.
Following Sisyphus into a secret chamber, he soon understood why Sisyphus had been so secretive.
He saw Thanatos, the god of death, chained to the ground. The chains were Thanatos's own, typically used to bind the dead, but now they bound him.
"Damn!!!"
Qin Muye was truly surprised. He had thought Thanatos was taken away by Zeus, but he never expected Sisyphus to have locked him in the basement.
Thanatos, upon seeing Qin Muye, was also quite agitated. He wriggled his body, signaling Qin Muye to quickly free him.
"Hypnos told me you had gone missing, and I thought Zeus had taken you away. How did you end up chaining yourself like this?" Qin Muye said, shocked.
The tightness of the chains suggested they were not loosely tied.
"It wasn't the Lord of Death who chained himself; I did it," Sisyphus said, somewhat embarrassed.
Qin Muye looked at Thanatos, then at Sisyphus.
"Are you playing around like this? Does Queen Merope know about it?" Qin Muye thought he had seen it all, but this was a whole new level.
As for Sisyphus forcing Thanatos to chain himself, that was highly unlikely. Sisyphus's small frame couldn't even handle a large threat, let alone force the god of death into such a game.
"Dionysus, it's not what you think. Here's what happened," Sisyphus began to explain. He had informed the river god Asopos that Zeus had taken his daughter. Zeus found out and ordered Thanatos to take Sisyphus to the House of Pain for a century or so. Sisyphus, using Qin Muye's identity, tricked Thanatos and got the chains, then overpowered him and locked him in the secret chamber.
"So, the charred Titan corpse was the river god Asopos?" Qin Muye pieced together the events, recalling the lightning-struck Titan.
Sisyphus's face changed when he heard this: "River God Asopos is dead? How dare Zeus do this? No wonder the Asopos River dried up recently."
Apart from Zeus, Sisyphus couldn't think of anyone else who would dare to harm the river god Asopos.
"What about Aphia? Do you know where she is?" Qin Muye asked, referring to Asopos's daughter.
"I'm not sure. Asopos went after her alone, and I didn't follow. I was dealing with the never-drying spring at the time," Sisyphus replied.
It seemed Zeus was indeed going to take action.
Qin Muye thought for a moment and then decisively freed Thanatos. The chains on him were not ordinary; they were a manifestation of his power, capable of binding even himself.
Even Zeus couldn't break free, as they represented death.
Thanatos quickly recovered. He was not the handsome youth he appeared as in the Underworld but a black-robed skeleton.
"Lord Thanatos, I will take Sisyphus to the Underworld. The mortal world has been in chaos during your absence, and you need to handle it urgently," Qin Muye said after some thought.
Thanatos glanced at Sisyphus and finally nodded before disappearing.
Qin Muye had connections in the Underworld; at least he had relationships with various factions.
Moreover, Thanatos could see that Zeus was involved, and he didn't want to offend the king of the gods. It was better to leave and let this son of the Underworld deal with the mess.
"Sisyphus, this is a good opportunity. Zeus is in the wrong and hasn't dragged you to the Underworld yet, so there's still a chance to turn things around."
"Find Merope and have her contact the sea goddess Thetis and the ocean god Oceanus. Tell them that Zeus has taken Aphia and killed Asopos. It would be best to involve the Earth Mother Gaia. The more the commotion, the safer you will be."
"This time, Zeus needs to suffer significant losses."
Qin Muye felt this was a major event. While he couldn't get directly involved, he could still benefit from it.
"After you've informed them, come with me to the Underworld. Don't be upset; you've offended the god of death, Thanatos. If Zeus gets really angry, you might end up worse off. Pass your throne to Aladdin and come with me to the Underworld for safety."
