Chapter 179: The Changing of the Guard
Chapter 179: The Changing of the Guard
Lu Ke wasn’t surprised that someone was lusting after his body. This incarnation’s elven form was indeed exceptionally well-built, and he was already familiar with the procedures for dealing with maids and servants who tried to climb into his bed. However, he had never experienced such a well-measured and rule-bound pursuit.
When Roine announced that Trella would be staying at the manor for a while, Lu Ke hadn’t realized the severity of the situation. He simply thought that this noble lady would lose interest in elves eventually and leave.
But her invasion was far more sophisticated than he anticipated.
Trella never disturbed him during his magic studies, and when he exercised, she only watched. Afterward, she would promptly offer him water and a towel, showing a level of care that was almost too considerate… if it weren’t for her constant attempts to join him in the bath.
She chose her moments of closeness carefully, often during trivial times and for trivial matters. For example, she would greet him at the door with a good morning when he woke up, sit next to him at meals, smile at him, and serve him food.
These actions made Lu Ke feel that it wasn’t right to get angry, but he also felt that they were affecting him negatively.
After a workout, as Lu Ke prepared to take a shower, he once again stopped Trella from joining him, his patience reaching its limit.
He finally decided to scold her.
“Miss Trella, you’ve had your fun, and it’s time to stop. I have no intention of finding a partner.”
“Can’t I just show you how much I care? Is it wrong to love someone?” Trella’s eyes were brimming with tears, her voice trembling.
“I am the legitimate daughter of the Gri family from the capital. I’ve set aside my noble upbringing and a woman’s modesty. Isn’t that enough to show my sincerity?”
“It’s not—”
Hearing her cry, Lu Ke’s body stiffened. He felt he should comfort her but was afraid that doing so would give her false hope. So, he remained silent.
“I know I’ve been wrong, so I’ve prepared an apology gift for you.”
Trella wiped her tears and handed him a small booklet, apologizing sincerely.
“I don’t need it. Please don’t bother me anymore.”
Lu Ke’s face was stiff as he refused.
“Alright.” Trella sadly put the booklet away and turned to leave, saying regretfully, “I guess the ‘Material Transformation Research Report’ handwritten by the sage Evix will have to be given to someone else.”
Snap—
Lu Ke’s face turned red as he grabbed the hem of Trella’s dress, whispering, “Wait.”
Trella turned around, looking innocent, “Is there something else? I know I was wrong, and I won’t bother you anymore, Lu Ke.”
Lu Ke stuttered for a moment, hesitantly saying, “Actually, it’s not that much of a bother.”
“But you just refused me.”
Trella looked troubled, waving the booklet in front of him, which drew his gaze.
Knowledge was a common obsession among elves, and Lu Ke’s research had recently hit a bottleneck. He desperately needed that manuscript.
After a few more waves, Trella used the booklet to lift Lu Ke’s chin, adopting a bully’s teasing demeanor.
“What are we going to do, Lu Ke? Do you still think my actions are a bother?”
“No.” Lu Ke answered, lying through his teeth.
“Can I greet you at your door in the morning?”
“Yes.”
“Can I serve you food?”
“Yes.”
“Can I join you in the bath?”
“...”
Lu Ke struggled to stop himself, whispering, “Change the condition.”
Trella’s eyes lit up, “Then let me touch your abs… I mean, let me help you massage and relax your abdominal muscles.”
Lu Ke: “…”
“Without this little gesture, it’s hard for me to do this. You know, the sage Evix’s manuscript is a very precious item. If you can’t even agree to this small request…”
Lu Ke took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and turned his head away, feeling a bit embarrassed as he lifted his shirt.
Trella carefully observed Lu Ke’s flustered expression and his slightly red, trembling ears, then reached out with a satisfied smile.
...
Two months later, a letter from Amil arrived.
Besides the one for Lady Roine, Lu Ke received one as well.
After finishing his daily magic practice, Lu Ke locked the door to prevent Trella from suddenly entering. He then lit a lamp and read the letter.
To My Friend:
I have successfully joined the army of the city-fortress Val in Bakrul Canyon. I am gradually adapting to the military regulations and have become a squad leader among our batch.
The first time I saw a demon, I was deeply moved. Our squad leader, Lexi, is powerful and experienced. Under his guidance, each of us has successfully slain a demon.
Currently, I am with the troops in the northern kingdoms, where monsters run rampant. We have crossed the Hewia Mountains and arrived at the Village of Swords.
With the village chief’s permission, I and forty-nine comrades tried to pull out the Hero’s Sword, but none of us succeeded. The few hero squads accompanying our troops also failed.
The answer is clear.
This is a fake sword! Otherwise, I, Amil Campbell, the future slayer of the Demon King, would not have failed. The Hero’s Sword is clearly just a marketing ploy by the Village of Swords.
Upon reflection, no one has ever pulled out this sword to defeat the Demon King. So, why assume this sword is the Hero’s Sword? In my opinion, it’s just a worthless piece of metal. It was foolish of me to be so obsessed with it.
Knowing the difficulties you face in your magical studies, I am sending back the magic guidebook I seized from the demons for your reference.
Additionally, during my recent military campaign, I encountered a highly knowledgeable mage. Given that Teacher Lenis is not taking her duties seriously, I have informed him of your residence's location, and he should arrive soon. Please be informed.
I have achieved great feats in battle while being away, but I cannot tend to the household. I hope my friends can assist me in this regard.
At the end of the letter, there was a flamboyant signature: "Amir Campbell."
Luk read the letter, which alternated between formal and informal language, with Amir proudly boasting about his accomplishments. He couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time.
Amir is twenty-six, yet he still acts so childishly.
But he does think of me. Not only has he sent back the magic guidebooks he collected, but he also brought me various local specialties from his travels.
Thinking about it, Amir is just like the traveling frog I used to play with—disobedient, loves to go out, mischievous, and occasionally sends things back home.
It's confirmed: Amir is my frog son.
Luk thought, feeling particularly cheerful.
In the past two months, thanks to the manuscripts he obtained through his charms, Luk made significant breakthroughs in his research.
Sage Evix's understanding of magic was far deeper than Luk's. He simplified the process of material transformation into two steps.
The first step involved changing the form of a substance, converting it from solid, liquid, or gas. The second step directly transformed it into the desired form, while also describing a method to alter perception through psychological suggestion.
With this, Luk achieved significant progress in material transformation. Now, he could freely switch between soil, brown sugar, water, and wine, and these skills were already practical in combat.
Further advancement would depend on the accumulation of transformation magic, but overall, it was a path with a high ceiling.
After finishing his magic practice, he began his daily routine of swordsmanship and physical training.
Without a strong physique, it was difficult to wield magic effectively. Moreover, he needed a way to protect himself when his magic ran out.
After a high-intensity training session, Luk slowly calmed his racing heartbeat and left the training room. As expected, Trela was already waiting by the door.
He sniffed himself, a bit exasperated.
"Why can you still find me even when I change my training location? Is my sweat that strong?"
"Sweat isn't that strong, but you have a unique scent—a mix of fresh grass, spring mud, and fruit."
Trela grinned smugly and reached out.
Luk instinctively blocked her, and she immediately pouted.
"You promised to let me touch, you can't go back on your word."
Trela's warm hand wandered over his abdomen, and Luk endured the subtle sensation, urging her.
"Enough is enough."
Trela showed her little fangs. "I decide when enough is enough, and you don't seem to mind this feeling too much."
Luk turned away. "Elves don't have as strong desires as humans."
"But you seem quite spirited, don't you?"
Trela suddenly changed her target, and Luk felt his entire body tingle. He pushed her away and fled.
Even the usually bold Trela blushed, staring at her fingers and murmuring softly.
"I touched him."
...
After reading the magic guidebook Amir sent, Luk walked to Lenis's room to give it to her. He saw her packing her belongings, her back to him.
Luk asked casually, "What are you doing?"
Lenis continued packing, answering simply, "Leaving the Campbell residence, the trade city of Barum, and possibly the Central Kingdoms. I plan to explore the South, and I considered the North, but the demons are too active there."
Luk stood still, his tone bewildered. "Why?"
"Guiding Amir is done. You have learned all the magic I know, and your path is clear. There's no need for me to stay here."
Lenis answered naturally, looking at the book in Luk's hand. "Is this for me?"
"Yes."
Luk mechanically handed the book to Lenis, stunned for a moment. When she finished packing and was about to leave, he finally reacted.
"Can't you stay a bit longer? Wait for Amir to return and say a proper goodbye. What about Lady Roine, the butler, and the head maid? A few decades wouldn't be long for you."
Lenis smiled, approached Luk, and patted his head.
"Why, are you going to miss your mother?"
"It's just not necessary."
Lenis's tone softened. "Luk, I've told you before, get used to saying goodbye."
"I don't want to stay here anymore. I want to continue my journey. That's all."
Luk was silent for a moment. "Can't you stay for me?"
"It's too late to start flattering me now." Lenis smiled, softly comforting him.
"Elves have nearly infinite lifespans. Soon, you'll realize this continent is small, and we will meet again."
With that, she walked out of the room without a backward glance.
"Be careful on your journey, take care of yourself."
Luk called after her, hesitating before adding the title.
"Mother."
Lenis paused, raised her hand in a wave, and then continued walking out of the room, out of the residence, her figure growing smaller until it vanished on the horizon.
