Chapter 179: The Approach of the Uchiha [27]
Chapter 179: The Approach of the Uchiha [27]
Whoosh!
Fengye returned to his residence.
By now, the place had been cordoned off, with ninja from the Anbu faction forming a perimeter, preventing other Konoha ninja from approaching. Within the blockade, Lin remained vigilant.
However, apart from her, Kakashi, and Kurenai Yuhi, there were also several ninja wearing the attire of the Uchiha clan, led by none other than Uchiha Fugaku.
At that moment, Uchiha Fugaku was crouching between the slumbering Kurenai and Kakashi, his eyes bearing the three tomoe of the Sharingan, chakra flowing steadily with a couple of abrupt surges.
He then straightened his posture, closed his eyes, and when he reopened them, the three tomoe in his eyes had vanished. Turning his head, he gazed at Fengye, who had appeared not far away and was walking towards them.
"My apologies, Fengye Jonin. The night patrol was negligent, allowing such an incident to occur. As the captain of the Konoha Security Force, I feel ashamed..." He paused briefly before continuing, "...Your brother and his genjutsu have been dealt with."
Uchiha Fugaku addressed Fengye.
Fengye gave a slight nod to Uchiha Fugaku, acknowledging his words. "Thank you, Clan Head Fugaku."
The mention of the Konoha Security Force was merely an excuse. Uchiha Fugaku's presence here, along with a faction of the Uchiha clan, effectively blocking the Anbu ninja outside, was a clear statement of their stance.
This was also a gamble for Uchiha Fugaku.
The Uchiha clan had been marginalized within Konoha, and even with Namikaze Minato in power, Sarutobi Hiruzen still held the reins. The situation had shown no signs of improvement thus far.
His decision to intervene in this incident was a calculated risk. If Fengye lost, he could still respond with the 'Konoha Security Force' as a front, but the Konoha higher-ups would undoubtedly intensify their suppression of the Uchiha clan.
However, if Fengye emerged victorious, the current situation would improve.
Now, with Fengye's return, it seemed that he had won, and Uchiha Fugaku's gamble had paid off.
"What's the situation now?" Uchiha Fugaku inquired, his tension easing slightly.
Fengye walked towards Kakashi and Kurenai, crouching down beside them and placing a hand on each of their shoulders. "Danzo is dead. For a while, I won't interfere in any Konoha matters."
Upon hearing Fengye's first statement, Uchiha Fugaku relaxed, but the latter half of his sentence caused him to tense up again. "You won't interfere?"
"It goes both ways," Fengye clarified with a faint smile as he examined Kakashi and Kurenai's bodies. Standing up, he turned to Uchiha Fugaku and requested, "They're the same... My residence is now destroyed. Could you lend me a hand, Clan Head Fugaku?"
Understanding the implication of Fengye's words, Uchiha Fugaku offered a slight smile. "It's no trouble at all. Follow me."
Fengye turned to Lin, who was still maintaining her three-tailed chakra, and gave her a slight nod. "You can retract your chakra now, Lin. Go ahead and wake them up."
"Okay," Lin replied, finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.
Although Fengye had been gone for a short while, it felt like an eternity to her. First, she had a brief standoff with Sarutobi Hiruzen, followed by the Anbu's encirclement and Uchiha Fugaku's arrival with his clan, taking charge of the situation and facing off against the Anbu.
What made this situation particularly unnerving for her was that they were dealing with Konoha's higher-ups, each one a formidable figure, evoking a sense vastly different from facing enemies on the battlefield.
"It's over now," Fengye reassured her with a smile. "But our home is destroyed. Let's find another place first, and I'll explain what happened later."
Kakashi also stirred and, like Kurenai, displayed a hint of confusion before his eyes widened as he took in their surroundings, piecing together what had transpired.
He locked eyes with Fengye, and in that moment, his suspicions were confirmed.
However, he didn't ask any questions right away. Instead, he stood up and followed Fengye, along with Uchiha Fugaku and the others, to the Uchiha clan's territory. They entered a room that was modest yet immaculately clean. Only then did Kakashi turn to Fengye and ask, "Was it... an attack targeting you, brother?"
"Mhm." Fengye nodded. "It's over now."
A worried expression crossed Kakashi's face. "Are you alright?"
Fengye smiled gently and sat down by the table. "What could possibly happen? It was just a convenient sweep of the dust that had settled in front of me."
"...”
Kakashi was left speechless.
Fengye's words left him wanting to retort, but he didn't know where to begin.
"What's the situation in the village now? How's Sensei Minato?"
"Danzo is dead, and I've destroyed Root. I also had a little contest with Sensei Minato and won by a move. For a while, I won't interfere in Konoha's affairs. Lastly, the Uchiha clan has now sided with me." Fengye nonchalantly summarized the events.
Though his words were simple, the implications left Kurenai and Kakashi stunned, mouths agape. It took them a long while to regain their composure.
"So, Danzo did make a move out of fear of your power, brother... And you and Sensei Minato have completely parted ways now," Kakashi said, his gaze downcast as he spoke.
Despite his premonitions, Kakashi still felt a pang of sadness at the rift between Fengye and the power structure of Konoha, as well as their divergence from Minato Namikaze. He was caught in the middle, after all.
"What about me now...?" Kakashi looked at Fengye, his eyes full of questions.
If Fengye and Minato were destined to split, Kakashi knew he had no choice but to stand with his brother, Fengye.
"Just continue serving as a jonin of Konoha," Fengye said, glancing at Kakashi. "You can express your stance to Sensei Minato if you want. Don't worry about it. Just live as you did before. The only issue between Sensei Minato and me is a difference in ideals. With the changes that have occurred, there won't be any more conflicts."
Hearing Fengye's words, Kakashi breathed a sigh of relief.
The outcome seemed much better than he had anticipated.
His worst fear had been that Fengye would break ties with Konoha's leadership and vie for the position of Hokage, sparking a massive internal conflict.
Now, it appeared that neither Minato nor Fengye wanted such an outcome and didn't wish to see Konoha descend into chaos. While Kakashi felt some regret that Fengye and Minato couldn't work together, this was still an acceptable resolution.
