Chapter 1784: A War Without Winners (Part 234)
Chapter 1784: A War Without Winners (Part 234)
Most of the time, high-frequency meetings are indeed pointless, as they often result in nothing but a bunch of empty talk.
Even Albert had to admit this, but sometimes, you just can't avoid it. All he could do was ensure that these meetings didn't become a waste of time.
"Look, we've saved the main seat for you." Fred stood up from his chair and walked around the round table to greet Albert as he entered the room.
"I just checked on Avalon's progress, and it seems we're a bit tight on time." George also walked over from the other side, placing a hand on Albert's shoulder and handing him a piece of parchment, "Why don't you postpone your world tour for a bit?"
Albert rolled his eyes and pulled out a chair to sit in the main seat at the round table, taking the parchment from George, "If you follow the plan I've laid out and take your time, there won't be any issues. Shanna is quite reliable in this regard."
Lee Jordan looked towards the door, ensuring Shanna hadn't arrived yet, before speaking softly, "Shanna isn't as reliable as you think, and I doubt she can handle it."
"If she also drops the ball one day, who will manage Avalon then?" Cedric, who had just entered the room, couldn't help but glare at Lee Jordan upon hearing this.
Cedric, more than anyone, understood that relying on Albert to manage Avalon was impossible, which was why he had been grooming Shanna to take his place.
Regarding this matter, Cedric believed that everyone was well aware of the situation, yet they still held on to unrealistic fantasies.
"I'm just worried that after Albert goes on his world tour, the Avalon we've built with so much effort will be easily destroyed. Shanna doesn't have Albert's authority, and it will be challenging to convince Avalon's residents." Lee Jordan wasn't unwilling to trust Shanna, but they had better options; there was no need to take such a risk.
"Shanna is trustworthy, and she has put in a lot of effort. Even I couldn't convince everyone." Albert looked around at the group and spoke softly, "If you have a more suitable candidate..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but his meaning was clear—he wouldn't mind if someone else took over managing Avalon.
The room fell into an eerie silence, and everyone stopped talking. If they had to do it themselves, they would only make a mess of things.
Just then, there was a knock on the door, and Shanna entered with a folder in her hand. She immediately sensed the strange atmosphere in the room and raised her eyebrows slightly, scrutinizing everyone.
"Everyone's here, let's begin!" Albert announced the start of the meeting and gestured for Shanna to take over.
After distributing the pre-prepared documents, Shanna began discussing the topic of the day's meeting: employment for Avalon's residents.
"This..."
After reading the papers Shanna had distributed, everyone's faces showed a mix of surprise and disbelief.
According to the description, most of Avalon's residents had been assigned jobs, except for a small number who were either looking for work or already employed.
However, upon closer inspection, the number wasn't that significant, as the original Defense Association didn't have many members to begin with.
So, after several rounds of recruitment, there weren't many left.
"Kenneth could use some help with the grocery store, and it can be a part-time job!" Albert struck down another suggestion, "To keep Avalon running, the breeding grounds, greenhouses, and orchards all require manpower. It's unrealistic to expect Shimmer and Dobby to handle most of the work. Avalon also needs a Healer."
"If N.E.W.T. grades prevent you from interning at St. Mungo's Magical Infirmary, I can help you pull some strings or talk to Madam Pomfrey. As long as you're willing to put effort into healing, learning some treatment-related skills to handle common issues should be manageable."
As they went through the list, everyone suddenly realized there were so many positions to be filled.
The residents of Avalon need not worry about finding jobs.
"I have a question," George raised his hand, "Does Avalon really have enough Galleons to pay such a huge salary?"
They all knew Avalon was running low on funds.
"My salary is paid by Albert," Shanna suddenly spoke up. Her job wasn't just to help manage Avalon but also to keep an eye on Albert's businesses, ensuring everything ran smoothly.
She was truly one of their own.
As for ensuring Shanna's reliability, all they needed to do was give her what she wanted.
"Even after deducting your salary, Avalon still needs to pay thousands of Galleons every month," George understood the implications. Even the most profitable Happy Home would struggle to afford such expensive employment costs, not to mention that Happy Home didn't belong to Avalon.
"Just collect a management fee each month, and with Avalon's resident count, it should cover the salaries of two people," Albert replied without hesitation.

"This..."
Everyone exchanged glances, a little surprised by Albert's decision. It wasn't that they wanted to object, but they were concerned about potential opposition from others.
"What's there to disagree with..." Albert knew what they were thinking and said, "Isn't it normal to pay a price while enjoying the benefits?"
"We're just worried that others might not agree."
Sometimes, asking for money from others is harder than asking for their lives.
"It doesn't have to be now; we can start collecting the fee after everyone begins working."
"Let them choose for themselves," Shanna continued Albert's thought, "After all, if Avalon wants to continue, something has to be done. We can inform them of the pros and cons later and let them decide for themselves."
In fact, none of the people present had any issues with this. Avalon's high welfare benefits required a certain amount of Galleons to maintain, and if they wanted to enjoy a better life, spending money was inevitable.
Moreover, with the two circulation models designed by Albert, there was still a lot of redundancy. Avalon's subsequent output, when converted into Galleons, was more than enough to support the employees needed to maintain its normal operations. The real challenge was how to keep these two systems running.
As the designer, Albert was the most suitable person for this task, but this guy intended to slack off, which was everyone's biggest concern. The others might not be able to handle Albert's remaining systems.
However, they had no choice but to accept Albert's whims! After all, Albert had already done so much for them, and they couldn't rely on him for everything.
