Chapter 175: Don't Worry, No One in the Wizarding World Knows Better How to Remove a Curse!
Chapter 175: Don't Worry, No One in the Wizarding World Knows Better How to Remove a Curse!
Lockhart's smile froze on his lips. He wasn't an evil Dark Wizard, but he was indeed a fraud.
"Are you joking, right?" Lockhart said with a forced smile.
"Of course not! Professor Dumbledore even awarded our Gryffindor House over a hundred House Points for it", Colin said, his face filled with admiration.
Harry's triumph over the Dark Lord was indeed great, but these young wizards had no idea who the Dark Lord really was or how terrifying he was. In comparison, riding a Dragon, defeating a Troll, and killing an evil Dark Wizard disguised as a professor were more in line with the fantasies of a typical young wizard.
Lockhart was starting to panic. He had never known that the previous Defense Against the Dark Arts professor had died in a tragic accident, and that it was at the hands of two young wizards.
This made Lockhart feel both absurd and uneasy as he looked at the two culprits.
"Most of the credit goes to Harry." Seeing Lockhart's gaze, Ivan quickly deflected the blame.
"He cast a spell with his hands, and Professor Quirrell's face melted like butter burned by a hot iron, peeling off in chunks."
Ivan deliberately made it sound extremely terrifying, vividly describing how Professor Quirrell's burned, pitted face crumbled into pieces.
"At that moment, Professor Quirrell was still alive. It was you, Ivan, who used the Crushing Curse to turn him into a pile of dust!" Harry said, clearly displeased.
"Maybe", Ivan shrugged, not arguing further. He then looked at Lockhart, whose expression was growing more and more strange.
"Even without us, Professor Quirrell would have had bad luck for various reasons. I've heard from upper-year students that this position is Cursed. No Defense Against the Dark Arts professor has ever stayed at Hogwarts for a full year!"
The more Ivan talked, the greener Lockhart's face became. He had thought that becoming a professor at Hogwarts would be a good way to enhance his reputation and prestige, but he hadn't expected it to be so dangerous.
"This year will be an exception. Professor Lockhart couldn't possibly be troubled by a small Curse, right?" Hermione couldn't help but interject.
Hermione had heard similar rumors from upper-year students, but she had always dismissed them. Besides, Professor Lockhart had solved countless problems and wouldn't be defeated by a simple Curse.
"Right, Professor Lockhart?" Hermione turned to ask the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, only to find that he had disappeared.
"Where's the professor?" Hermione asked, puzzled.
"I saw him heading towards the Headmaster's Office." Ivan pointed down the corridor, where Lockhart's back could still be seen.
Hermione was speechless for a moment.
Ivan and Harry exchanged a look, and both smiled. They believed that Lockhart would no longer harass them so easily.
Ivan even wondered if Lockhart would resign because of this, and who the next Defense Against the Dark Arts professor would be.
However, while Lockhart had calmed down, Colin was a different story. The boy was like a pesky little follower, always trying to take their pictures.
Ivan had to take advantage of Colin's inattention and cast a small spell to block the camera lens, making Colin think his camera was malfunctioning.
"Is that really okay?" Harry looked at the boy who was about to cry, a bit worried.
"Don't worry, the magic will wear off in a few hours." Ivan explained. Although he found Colin's enthusiasm quite troublesome, he didn't want to ruin the boy's things.
Ron quietly fell back, curious about something. Both of his friends were so famous, but what about him?
"Colin, did you ever hear about me at home?" Ron asked curiously.
Colin, who was sulking with his camera, looked at Ron blankly for a moment.
"Who are you?"
At the same time, Lockhart hurriedly arrived at the headmaster's office. After saying the password, he smoothly met Dumbledore, who was browsing through a book.
The old headmaster slowly stopped his actions, interlacing his long fingers, and spoke in a gentle tone.
"Professor Lockhart, you have less than ten minutes before your first class. Is there something important you need to talk to me about?"
Lockhart, who had been intimidated by Ivan, had no desire to teach. He spoke hastily.
"Headmaster Dumbledore, before I took this position, you never told me that the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor's position was cursed and dangerous. I even heard that the previous professor died on the job."
Lockhart was genuinely panicked. He wondered if he had somehow offended Dumbledore and was considering whether he should find a way to run away.
"Professor Lockhart", Dumbledore interrupted him to prevent him from continuing.
"The so-called curse is just a rumor. I can assure you that most of the wizards who have held this position are still alive. Last year's Professor Quirrell was just an accident."
What about the rest?
Lockhart wanted to ask, but Dumbledore didn't give him the chance. The centenarian pointed to the open page in his book, speaking with deep meaning.
"Moreover, if I remember correctly, in your autobiography, 'Travels with Trolls,' you mentioned that no one in the magical world knows better how to break a curse than you!"
Only then did Lockhart clearly see that the book on the table was one of his autobiographies, 'Travels with Trolls.'
On the page Dumbledore had opened, there was a moving picture of himself, smiling brightly, repeatedly saying, "No one in the magical world knows better how to break a curse than me!"
"Ah, yes, that's right!" Lockhart tried to defend himself awkwardly, but Dumbledore's blue eyes, peering through his half-moon glasses, were fixed on him, making him feel as if he was being seen through.
Lockhart felt uncomfortable and swallowed his words, hurriedly assuring Dumbledore that a small curse was nothing to him.
Dumbledore's tone relaxed, comforting Lockhart that working at Hogwarts was very safe. Most of the time, it was just about teaching and giving classes.
Not dangerous at all.
After Lockhart left, Dumbledore sighed helplessly, pondering who he should ask to replace Lockhart next year.
It had to be said, finding the right person was becoming increasingly difficult.
