Chapter 1744: A War with No Victors (Part 194)
"Mom, do we have guests today?"
Ron, just returning home from an overtime shift, lifted the cover on the table and glanced at the late-night snack Mrs. Weasley had prepared for him, his eyes widening slightly in surprise at the sight of the unusually lavish spread.
"I invited Albert and his wife over for dinner at our shack today," Mrs. Weasley said, preoccupied with her own tasks, casually responding to her youngest son.
"Go ahead and eat."
"What are they here for?" Ron asked, his voice laced with caution.
"Harry wants Albert to be James' godfather," Mrs. Weasley said, her mood unusually cheerful, completely unaware of the change in her son's expression. She continued, lost in her own thoughts.
"To be honest, your father and I initially thought Albert would refuse. Harry mentioned earlier that he's quite particular about such matters."
In truth, the Weasley couple had always been grateful to Albert. Fred, George, and Percy had all received his care and support. They had always hoped for a closer relationship with Albert, and his acceptance of the godfather role for James was an unexpected delight.
"What!"
Ron was startled by this revelation.
"Shut up, Ron. If you wake James, I'll skin you alive."
Mrs. Weasley put down her work and glared at her youngest son, as if he had just committed an unforgivable offense.
Moreover...
Mrs. Weasley's sharp instincts picked up on something amiss in Ron's reaction. Could there be some sort of issue between him and Albert? She decided to ask Harry about it another day.
Why did this son of hers always give her so much to worry about? Ron, unaware of his mother's thoughts, quickly lowered his head and continued eating his late-night snack, avoiding her stern gaze.
After hastily finishing his meal, he took the half-empty cup of hot chocolate and headed upstairs.
To be frank, Ron's feelings about Albert were complex—a mix of admiration, envy, and jealousy. Although he knew that having Albert as James' godfather was likely the best choice, Ron couldn't help but feel dejected.
He always felt like he and Albert were incompatible, and he couldn't understand why everyone liked that guy.
Well, Ron also knew why. If he were someone else, he'd probably like Albert too. But for some reason, Ron just couldn't bring himself to like him. He always felt that Albert was insincere and suspected there was some secret between him and Hermione.
Perhaps the latter reason held more weight.
Lying in bed, deep in thought, Ron suddenly sat up and decided to write a letter to Hermione.
Although Hermione had already made it clear in her previous letter that she only considered him a good friend, Ron still wanted to find an opportunity to talk to her in person.
At that moment, Ron suddenly felt like he understood Lavender's feelings.
He spent a long time writing the letter, editing and revising it repeatedly until late into the night when he finally finished. He then asked Ruijing, who had just returned from hunting, to send the letter.
Only after the owl completely disappeared into the night did Ron breathe a sigh of relief. However, he never considered what Hermione might feel upon receiving this letter.
As long as it wasn't intercepted, delivering a letter in the United Kingdom didn't take long.
The next day, Hermione received a letter from Ron. Although this wasn't necessarily good news for her, she opened it and began reading its contents.
Hermione had already known about Albert becoming James' godfather, and it was Albert himself who had told her.
As for Ron's complaints about the Aurors' daily overtime, Hermione had no interest in them. It wasn't until she reached the end of the letter that she finally understood why Ron had written to her.
Ron's desire for a meeting with Hermione genuinely made her feel a bit tense.
Even though she was still a student at Hogwarts, even if she had a way to temporarily leave the castle, it wouldn't be an easy task.
The most important thing was Ron's letter, which also made Hermione realize that Ron hadn't given up.
She had thought that writing a letter to clarify the situation would put an end to the matter, but she never expected to still receive such a letter.
This wasn't a good sign.
Because of this, Hermione could only take the letter to Albert and discuss the matter with him, hoping to get some advice.
To be honest, I'm not at all surprised. If he could easily let go, this problem wouldn't exist in the first place. Go talk to him.
"What if he keeps pursuing me?" Hermione was particularly concerned about this issue.
"Then it means your friendship has reached its end." Albert said indifferently, "Just avoid him for a while. At most, it'll take two or three years, and there won't be similar problems again."
"Why should I hide from him?" Hermione wasn't satisfied with Albert's solution and couldn't help but ask, "Can I alter Ron's memory to make him like Lavender instead?"
"You should know that there's no such thing as love magic in this world. Doing that will only bring trouble upon yourself."
Albert also knew that Hermione was just venting, so he gave a slight reminder and didn't say anything further.
"Can we slightly alter some of Ron's memories to make him like me less?"
"Don't try anything foolish." Albert said to Hermione.
At this moment, the door to the Defense Against the Dark Arts office was knocked, and Cedric entered. After entering, he saw Hermione leaving in a hurry.
"What's wrong with Hermione?"
"She came to me for a solution, but I don't have a good one either." Albert shrugged.
"What's the matter?" Cedric couldn't help but tease, "You're stumped too?"
"Love is a very personal matter." Albert explained.
"She doesn't like you, does she!" Cedric looked at Albert with a strange expression, as if he also found this normal.
"What are you thinking? I already have a wife and daughter." Albert rolled his eyes at Cedric and retorted, "Anyone with a brain wouldn't say something like that."
"That's hard to say. With your charm, it wouldn't be difficult to find someone who wants to be with you." Cedric spoke the truth.
Of course, he was just joking, and Albert knew about his relationship with his wife.
"It's Ron." Albert hesitated for a moment but still said, "Hermione only sees Ron as a good friend, but Ron seems to have fallen for Hermione, which troubles her. You know, it's not difficult for a girl to reject a guy, but Hermione doesn't want this matter to ruin her relationship with Ron."
"Just reject him politely. You should be good at that. I remember you rejected many girls in the past." Cedric winked at Albert.
"I already had a girlfriend back then, so the reason for rejection was ready-made."
"Then Hermione can say she already likes someone."
"She's already said she doesn't plan to date for now."
Looking at the guy in front of him who didn't seem to mind the trouble, Albert ended the topic and asked what he was doing there.
