Chapter 174: You Definitely Don’t Know How This Professor’s Position Became Available
Having received Professor Mcgonagall’s promise, Ivan headed to the Great Hall for dinner in a good mood.
When he arrived, the Great Hall was already packed with people, but fortunately, Hermione, Harry, and Ron had saved a spot for him.
“Ivan, why are you so late?” Hermione, who was struggling with a steak, turned around and asked.
“Just discussing some questions with Professor Mcgonagall,” Ivan smiled and said casually, not revealing too much information.
Animagus Transformation was a secret. Although he trusted Hermione, the fewer people who knew about it, the safer it would be.
“No wonder you’re so good at Transfiguration!” Hermione said, sounding a bit frustrated.
The young witch had a pretty good idea where the gap between her and Ivan lay. She must not be working hard enough and not actively seeking advice from the professors!
Thinking about how Ivan often practiced Transfiguration while eating last year, Hermione picked up a nearby cup and started practicing, occasionally asking Ivan for tips on casting techniques, which he readily provided.
Harry and Ron, the two academic underachievers, couldn’t join in the conversation and could only complain to each other about their recent misfortunes.
Especially Ron, who kept grumbling about his wand being faulty. Harry, exasperated, suggested he write home for a new one, but Ron refused outright, not wanting to face another scolding.
Ivan suddenly had an idea and asked:
“Ron, can I see your broken wand?”
The method of wand-making had always intrigued Ivan. However, he didn’t have any spare wands to study and didn’t want to break any of the intact ones, so Ron’s broken wand piqued his interest.
“Sure, can you fix it, Ivan?” Ron immediately handed his wand over, looking at Ivan expectantly.
Ivan took the wand and examined it closely, noticing that it was severely damaged, almost split in two, with only a few wood fibers holding it together. Ron had also used magical glue to prevent it from falling apart.
After opening the system panel, the information was displayed clearly:
【Magic Item: wand (Rowan wood, Unicorn hair)
Magic: Low (Medium)
Special Condition: Broken
Description: This is a severely damaged wand. Although the core is not damaged, using this wand to cast spells has a high probability of backfiring.】
“Maybe I can fix it, but I can’t guarantee anything!” Ivan said, feeling somewhat confident after reading the description but still uncertain.
“Go ahead and try, it’s bad enough as it is,” Ron said nonchalantly, feeling annoyed every time he looked at the wand.
Ivan nodded and put the wand away for the moment.
Hermione then remembered something. “Ron, if you give Ivan your wand, what will you do for the next Defence Against the Dark Arts class?”
“Trust me, you won’t need a wand in the next Defence Against the Dark Arts class!” Ivan said.
“Why?” Hermione held a new class schedule, with all of Lockhart’s lessons circled in hearts, and said eagerly, “I think Professor Lockhart will definitely teach us some new spells!”
Ivan looked at Hermione with a strange expression. He had thought that Lockhart’s cold behavior in Diagon Alley would have broken her heart.
However, I believe this Defence Against the Dark Arts class will certainly leave a deep impression on Hermione.
"Even if he teaches us a new spell next class, I won’t be able to cast it with this broken wand." Ron seemed to take it in stride, knowing he would just end up embarrassing himself anyway.
Harry had a vague feeling that Lockhart's teaching would be absolutely terrible, given that the man didn’t seem like a serious professor at all.
The reality was even worse than they imagined, or rather, they encountered trouble on their way to the classroom.
A first-year, a very thin and gray-haired boy, was blocking the path, holding a Muggle camera. As soon as he saw Harry, his face turned red, and he hurriedly approached.
"Hello, Harry? My name is Colin Creevey, I’m also in Gryffindor House, can I, I mean, can I take a photo of you?"
Take a photo? Harry was quite puzzled; no one had ever asked him for a photo before.
Colin seemed very enthusiastic, babbling about Harry's legendary deeds, such as how Harry had escaped the clutches of the mysterious dark wizard, and even asked for an autograph.
Ivan gave Harry a sympathetic look; it seemed that being famous wasn’t always a good thing and could sometimes be a hassle.
But Ivan didn’t expect that this little boy, Colin Creevey, after recounting all of Harry's legendary deeds, would quickly set his sights on him.
"And, you’re Ivan-Hals, right? I’ve been reading the papers these past few days. Oh my, they say you’re the savior of werewolves, the most brilliant potion master in centuries!
I heard from a senior named Seamus that you killed a Troll on your first day at school and even rode a Dragon and breathed fire at the end of the term!"
Colin was so excited he could hardly speak. He never thought that shortly after entering Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he would meet his idols and even be sorted into the same house as them!
This was simply amazing!
Ivan’s lips twitched as he looked at the excited Colin who was eager to pull him in for a photo. He now understood a bit of the troubles Harry faced on a daily basis.
Suddenly, Colin seemed to remember something and let out a loud scream. "Oh right, I also know that you killed a professor named Quirrell last year!"
Colin Creevey's shrill scream immediately echoed down the entire corridor, drawing the attention of several young wizards. Then, Lockhart’s distinctive voice rang out.
"What are you talking about?"
Dressed in flashy attire, Lockhart strode over from the other end of the corridor, pushing through the group of young wizards, and asked with interest.
"Someone killed a professor? Who? Which professor died?"
"It was the previous Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, Quirrell! He was a fraud, an evil dark wizard who fooled everyone with his excellent disguise, but Hals saw through it."
Colin was very excited as he gossiped, recounting some dubious information he had heard from somewhere, without noticing that Lockhart’s expression was off.
"In the end, Hals stopped Quirrell from attacking the Forbidden Forest Keeper and successfully killed him with Harry. That’s why Headmaster Dumbledore hired you, Professor Lockhart, to take over this position this year."
