Chapter 174: Is that so?
Chapter 174: Is that so?
Upon hearing Lyon's refusal, Jerry couldn't help but sigh. He scratched the back of his head and said hesitantly, "Since you have something going on at home, you should go back first. I'll ask for leave on your behalf once the Superintendent wakes up..."
"No! That's not necessary!"
After hastily gathering the photos on the table, Lyon carefully examined the woman who had come to report the case. Pondering the connection between her and Anna, he spoke, "Actually, my family matter isn't that urgent. Why don't I first accompany you, Senior, to inquire about the situation, and then I'll head back."
"That's also fine..."
Seeing Lyon's sudden change of heart, Jerry raised his eyebrows in surprise. When he noticed Lyon's unwavering gaze at the woman, a knowing smile appeared on his lips.
'Don't even think about it!'
Jerry reached into his pocket, caressing a particular anomalous object capable of soul transmission. He then slyly nudged Lyon with his elbow.
'She's already married. She filled out the registration form this morning when she came to report the case, and her marital status is listed as married!'
"..."
I really didn't mean it like that... And married? Then, Anna must be...
Concerned that his sister might be a hidden 'Cao Thief', Lyon's head was still throbbing slightly. He invited the two into the office and seated them on the guest sofa.
Placing the shopping bag containing the Black Sheep at his feet and taking out a small notebook, Lyon held a self-made charcoal pencil and politely asked, "Miss, I need to understand some basic information first. Could you please tell me your name again?"
"Veronica."
Looking at Lyon, whose expression was gentle yet carried a subtle sense of detachment, the Princess sighed inwardly. She didn't directly reveal her relationship with Lyon but instead cooperated and answered a few of his questions.
"Okay."
Through the Black Sheep's soul vision, Lyon confirmed that she wasn't lying. Everything she had said so far was the truth. He secretly gave Jerry a thumbs-up and continued, "May I ask what kind of anomalous situation you've encountered, and how did you come to know about the Purge Bureau?"
"Regarding the anomalous situation... Since yesterday noon, everyone has forgotten about me. As for how I know about the Purge Bureau... I've always known of its existence."
Veronica, the Princess, looked at the man who had been her prince just yesterday, and her expression became complex. "You might find this hard to believe, but yesterday, I was still a princess of this country."
A princess?
Jerry furrowed his brows in surprise and turned his gaze towards Lyon.
That can't be right. I remember the King only had one son. Where did this princess come from? Is she lying? No, she isn't lying. At the very least, she genuinely believes what she's saying.
Shaking his head slightly, Lyon gave Jerry a negative response. With his mind in a jumble, he rubbed his temples and continued, "Then... From the time you discovered the anomalous situation until now, a whole night has passed. Have you contacted your family or close friends during this time? Were they unable to regain their memories?"
"I suppose I contacted a portion of them."
Princess Veronica sighed and said, "But everyone has forgotten about me, including the lady-in-waiting who always accompanied me. No matter how many past events I could recall, she didn't believe I was the princess. She even wanted to call for help to have me captured. I had to knock her unconscious to escape.
As for my family, I can't enter the palace right now, so I can't reach them. I haven't had the chance to try and awaken their memories."
"I see..."
The conditions still aren't sufficient to make a judgment about the actual situation.
After listening to the Princess's words, Jerry immediately gave Leon a subtle signal to ask more pointed questions to determine if this woman was delusional or truly influenced by an anomaly.
Leon straightened his posture and fixed his gaze on Princess Veronica's eyes, asking, "I apologize if my next question may be a bit offensive, but please try to answer... Have you ever considered the possibility that you might not be a princess at all, but instead experiencing some sort of hallucination?"
"No," Princess Veronica replied, shaking her head. She had already pondered this question for an entire evening and was well-prepared. "I'm quite certain that I am indeed the princess of this country, and I should have a way to prove it."
As she spoke, she glanced at Leon, who was exuding an air of drunkenness and fatigue, with half of his collar stained with lipstick. Leon furrowed his brows slightly and then continued, "You two, do you know about the Lane Family's Investiture Ceremony yesterday?"
The Lane Family's Investiture Ceremony?
Upon hearing Princess Veronica's words, Leon and Jerry exchanged surprised glances and then nodded in succession.
"I've heard a little about it," Leon replied.
"Not only do I know about it, but I was there yesterday," Princess Veronica added.
After answering the question posed by the woman who claimed to be the princess, Leon's mind suddenly went blank, as if something was about to emerge from his memory.
But when he tried to grasp this information, it felt like there was an invisible, thick glass barrier between them. No matter how he reached out, he could only touch a cold, hard, and solid barrier.
"I was there yesterday too," Leon said, noticing his own confused expression and unconsciously pinching his brow.
Princess Veronica's heart stirred with anticipation, and she clenched her fists, speaking earnestly, "Although it may seem strange to you, the King actually has more than one son. He also has an older daughter, and that daughter is me."
"Yesterday, I secretly went to the Lane Manor to observe the Lane Family's Investiture Ceremony. But as soon as I entered the hall, I heard someone proposing to me with the entire Lane Family as a bridal gift."
"Wait!" Leon interrupted, raising his hand as his mind grew more confused. "Let's assume that you are indeed a princess, but are you sure someone proposed to you with the entire Lane Family as a bridal gift?"
"I'm certain," Princess Veronica affirmed.
"But I don't recall such an event," Leon said, rubbing his brow. "The only person who would have the qualification to offer the entire Lane Family as a bridal gift is probably just one person. You may not have seen me, but I am actually..."
"You're the new Duke of Lionheart," Princess Veronica revealed, surprising Leon. She looked into his eyes and spoke emphatically, "The person who proposed to me yesterday was you!"
"Huh?" Leon was taken aback.
"And I accepted," Princess Veronica stated.
"What?!" Leon exclaimed, taken aback by Jerry's astonished expression. He waved his hands in disbelief, "That's impossible. If you're truly the princess and you accepted my proposal..."
If that were the case, I should have a corresponding emblem, and it should be at least a Silver Rank, maybe even a Golden Rank... Holy shit, it's true! He casually opened the system panel and saw the dazzling golden light of the Traveling Dove Duke emblem in the slot. Leon's mind felt like it had been struck by a heavy hammer, and everything went haywire.
Did I really propose to her yesterday? Is she truly the princess?
