Chapter 1738: A War With No Victor (Part 188)
Chapter 1738: A War With No Victor (Part 188)
Ever since the end of the Second Wizarding War, Ron, who had accepted Kingsley's invitation to become an Auror alongside Harry, felt that his life had never been as joyful as it once was.
The life of an Auror was never as glamorous as it seemed on the surface, and the dangerous, heavy workload was suffocating Ron. He yearned for the carefree days they had spent together at school, but deep down, Ron knew that their relationship would likely never return to what it once was.
The moment Hermione decided to stay at school for another year, the distance between the three friends became inevitable.
If only he had convinced Hermione to become an Auror! Ron had this thought more than once.
But there was no turning back in this world!
They all knew that it wasn't that they didn't encourage Hermione; it was just that Hermione had no intention of becoming an Auror. She chose to pursue her own path in life.
Ron understood that he should be happy for Hermione's choice, but every time he thought about it, he felt incredibly miserable.
Perhaps he had missed his last chance.
Ironically, Ron had thought that once he became a respected Auror, Hermione would pay more attention to him, but that wasn't the case at all.
Ever since the end of the Second Wizarding War, Hermione hadn't given him a second glance, treating him like a familiar stranger.
This made Ron feel terrible.
Sometimes, he even considered quitting his job as an Auror and finding a more relaxed and free occupation, but the high salary of an Auror made him temporarily abandon the idea.
Yes!
Ron didn't want to lose this lucrative salary! He despised poverty and the memories of his impoverished past.
"Are you okay?"
Harry handed Ron a large cup of strong, refreshing tea and asked with a smile, looking at his best friend who still had dark circles under his eyes, "You had a nightmare last night!"
"Yeah, I had a terrible nightmare last night," Ron said, his cheek muscles tightening after taking a big gulp of the bitter tea.
"What did you dream about?"
Harry pulled out a chair and sat down next to Ron.
"I dreamed about Lavender," Ron said, lowering his voice and speaking vaguely, "You know, she's been writing me letters, and even Mom..." Ron trailed off, "I thought that after I started working, we would naturally drift apart over time, but I never expected..."
"You never expected that Lavender wouldn't give up and would keep writing you letters," Harry said, unable to hold back a laugh. "So, you dreamed that you married Lavender?"
"Shut up, Harry," Ron said irritably.
"Sorry, sorry. But I think if you don't want to be bothered by Lavender's letters, you should go and clear things up with her."
Harry spoke these words, feeling a bit insincere. He was well aware of the situation between Ron and Lavender, and while it was mostly Ron's fault, from a friend's perspective, the best solution was for Ron to break up with Lavender since he no longer liked her.
However, Ron was indecisive about this matter, never mustering the courage to officially break up with Lavender. This led to a series of subsequent issues, even causing Mrs. Weasley to believe they were still dating, leaving Ron at a loss for words.
One of the reasons Ron had slept poorly that night was because he dreamed of marrying Lavender, which had jolted him awake from the nightmare.
"Actually, Lavender isn't as bad as you think. Otherwise, you wouldn't have tried dating her in the first place."
"Harry tried to comfort Ron with insincere words, 'Besides, Lavender still loves you. If I were in your shoes...'
"Shut up, Harry!" Ron interrupted, covering his head which ached from lack of sleep. He was about to snap at Harry, who seemed oblivious to the situation.
"Why don't you try writing a letter to Hermione?" Harry awkwardly changed the subject.
To be honest, he wanted to advise Ron to give up, but he couldn't bring himself to say it. Some things could only be understood through personal realization; reminders from others were often useless and unwelcome.
Ron, who had already drunk half a cup of strong tea, suddenly asked, "Are you two still in contact?"
"No need to be in contact, even if we..." Harry seemed to realize something and abruptly stopped talking.
Ron had missed the opportunity to settle down in Avalon with Hermione, just like Harry and Hermione had done.
Ron could tell what Harry was implying. After Avalon was built, Harry and Hermione would be neighbors, able to meet whenever they wanted, and there would be no need for letters.
This made Ron even more depressed. He could have had his own house, too.
Unfortunately, Ron had chosen to become an Auror instead of staying in Avalon to help with the construction, missing out on a great opportunity.
What if he hadn't chosen to become an Auror with Harry but had returned to school with Hermione or stayed in Avalon to help build it? Ron suddenly recalled last night's nightmare, in which he had not only dreamed of marrying Lavender but also seen Hermione and Albert attending their wedding together.
The two seemed to be a couple, behaving intimately like a young married couple.
No, they were a couple.
Although this seemed almost impossible to Ron, it made him feel terrible for the rest of the morning, and he became distracted, earning warnings from his fellow Aurors several times.
"You don't look well. Maybe you should take a break and go back early," Harry suggested, feeling that it wasn't a good idea for Ron to continue with their mission.
"No, I'm just a bit..."
Before Ron could refuse, he was stopped by the disdainful looks from the surrounding Aurors.
"You're in no condition to work. Go back and get some rest. I'll ask Director Robards for leave on your behalf," Harry said, patting Ron's shoulder comfortingly. "As for Lavender, if you really don't like her, just meet her and have a good talk to clear things up."
"Yeah, I will," Ron muttered unhappily as he left.
"Who's Lavender?"
After Ron left, the Aurors around Harry asked curiously.
These guys were so eager for gossip!
"Ron's ex-girlfriend," Harry replied.
He had no idea what kind of dramatic love stories these imaginative people around him were conjuring up in their minds.
"So, Weasley's heartbroken?"
Harry seemed to realize something and remained silent, not wanting to give them any more fuel for their wild speculations.
However, silence often implied consent.
And so, the story of Ron Weasley's heartbreak quietly spread through the Auror office.
"Oh, this..."
Harry felt an urge to cover his face. He had no idea what kind of interesting expression Ron would have on his face when he found out about this.
