Chapter 173: Thor's Despair (First Update)
Chapter 173: Thor's Despair (First Update)
...
At the center of the base, Mjolnir stood tall.
Thor walked forward with confidence, his millennia-old hammer finally found. All he needed to do was pick up Mjolnir, and he would regain his godly form, allowing him to call Heimdall to open the Bifrost and transport him back to Asgard.
Surrounding him were Jerry, Coulson, several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and the Old Bridge Town Celestial Weather Research Team.
Above him, Hawkeye Barton stood ready with a custom bow, prepared for any unexpected events.
However, just as Thor's right hand touched Mjolnir, a thunderclap echoed through the sky, followed by a sudden downpour of rain.
"I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling about this. The rain seems to be a bad omen!"
Jane, who had quickly retreated to a nearby shelter to avoid the rain, muttered to herself.
As soon as her words left her mouth, Thor's anguished roar echoed from the other side:
"Oh, no!!!!"
It turned out that after gripping the hammer, Thor was unable to lift Mjolnir, just like everyone else. After several attempts, he realized that this time, the All-Father Odin was truly angry, not just playing a trick on him. He was exiled, and it was unclear for how long.
Overwhelmed with despair, Thor fell to his knees, roaring to the sky to vent his sorrow.
"I told you it wouldn't be that easy. And the rain is just too fitting!"
Watching the cold rain beat down on Thor's face, Jerry shook his head and waved his wand, casting a Fire Wall over Thor. It not only shielded him from the rain but also dried his soaked hair.
Seeing Thor's desperate state, Jane, who had long harbored feelings for him, felt a pang of sympathy. She quickly approached and helped him to the shelter, offering comfort.
"What do we do now?"
Coulson looked at Jerry.
"Something must have gone wrong. Perhaps the All-Father Odin doesn't want him back yet. For now, it's best to leave him alone and let him calm down."
Jerry shrugged his shoulders.
In truth, he had already suspected as much. Based on certain scenes from The Avengers, he knew the situation wasn't that simple.
At that moment, Coulson received an order from Fury. It was clear that Nick Fury had seen everything that had happened through the surveillance.
"Director Fury wants to speak with you."
"Sure, let's go."
Jerry nodded and followed Coulson to the command center on the west side of the base. He was curious about Fury's plans for Thor.
Before leaving, Coulson specifically instructed a few agents to take Jane and Eric to the base's quarters to rest.
"Do you think the stories he told are true?"
In the command center, Fury, looking serious, asked Jerry, who was checking his watch.
Jerry looked up and replied:
"I can't guarantee the truth of his stories, but when I approached him, I could sense a very powerful magical force within him. So, I believe he is Thor, and his stories are likely true."
At that moment, Jerry wasn't lying. While he could confirm Thor's tales through his knowledge from the movies of his past life, he had indeed felt the powerful force within Thor.
However, he wasn't sure if it was Thor's own power or the power Odin used to seal him.
"Is that so, then this is quite troublesome!"
Fury opened his single eye and fell into deep thought.
Over a decade ago, before he became the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., he had already known about the many powerful alien civilizations beyond Earth.
Back then, he had fought alongside Captain Marvel to help the Skrulls in their war against the Kree, during which he lost the sight in one of his eyes.
So, he believed about seventy to eighty percent of Thor’s story. If he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have rushed over in person.
If this matter was handled well, Earth might gain a valuable ally in the universe. If not, it could lead to a global war.
"Coulson, take the three astrometeorology experts to the base’s research team and see if they can draw more conclusive results from the weather data."
A moment later, Fury gave his orders to Coulson, who stood nearby.
Although he was already eighty percent convinced, he still had some doubts. He needed to rely on scientific verification to uncover the truth, which might lead to a different conclusion.
"Yes, Director, but what about Thor?"
Coulson inquired.
"For now, leave him be. I’ll talk to him once he’s calmed down completely."
Fury waved his hand dismissively.
The current Thor, without his divine powers, was no different from an ordinary human and didn’t require much attention.
After Coulson left, Fury turned to Jerry.
"Have you found any relevant records in the magic books you’ve studied that can verify Thor’s story?"
"Nothing, I’ve told you everything I know. It’s your job now. Oh, and remember to equip the robot soldiers with high-voltage stun weapons when you modify them!"
Jerry didn’t want to spend too much time with the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. After understanding Fury’s thoughts, he gave a casual response and left.
It was almost five o’clock, and he needed to get back to prepare dinner for Elsa and Belle, whose school bus would be arriving at the neighborhood entrance soon.
New York public elementary and middle schools typically dismissed around three in the afternoon. Students could stay after school for club activities if they wished, or they could go home directly.
Jerry always returned home on time because he lived close by, making him the first to arrive.
Around five, Elsa and Berry would get home, while Hass would be the last, sometimes arriving as late as seven. If he had a case, it could be even later, sometimes not returning until nine or ten at night, or even staying up all night and coming back the next morning.
After leaving the command center, Jerry found the room Coulson had assigned him, hung a sign outside that read "Magic Practice, No Trespassing", and cast a locking charm and a Muggle-repelling charm.
"Quick binding, Muggle repel!"
He then put on his gloves and activated the Portkey.
A spatial ripple later, he vanished from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s temporary base in New Mexico and reappeared at his home in New York.
Around eight in the evening, watching Hass, Elsa, and Berry yawn and head to their rooms after dinner, Jerry activated the Portkey again.
He had added a bit of a sleep-inducing potion to their dinner, something similar to a sleeping pill but beneficial to the body. It would ensure they felt particularly refreshed the next day.
