Chapter 173: The Earth-Shaking Gorgon?
Chapter 173: The Earth-Shaking Gorgon?
Rod found searching for things to be a tedious task, especially when he couldn't rely on his three wolves and six birds and had to do it himself.
He decided to treat this as another part of the test.
After learning about the preferred habitat of the Unicorn Beast, finding its den had become significantly easier.
He carefully examined every suspicious mountain peak, and an idea began to form in his mind.
If he sent out Stone Beetles to drill through these mountains and make them collapse, wouldn't the Unicorn Beast come out?
Just like how the Mountain Borer once drilled through Mount Gourd to release the Snake and Scorpion Spirits.
This method might be more efficient, and he wouldn't have to worry about missing the right mountain.
Rod was tempted, but he hesitated, thinking of how the guild master might cry if he did this. He decided to keep it as a last resort.
"Help me, help me!"
After searching for over half an hour without success, the card he carried suddenly spoke up.
"Go that way!"
Rod gave the command, and the Crab sprinted off, finding Kana's location in just a few minutes.
"Found it?"
"Shh—" Kana pulled Rod behind a rock, gesturing for him to be quiet, then pointed to a nearby cave.
Rod listened carefully, hearing the faint snoring sounds coming from inside.
Kana whispered, "That's the Unicorn Beast's snoring. It's probably sleeping in there. Do you have a plan?"
"Of course, we'll ambush it," Rod replied in a hushed tone. "If we don't take advantage of it while it's sleeping, are we even human?"
"But the cave doesn't lead directly to where it's sleeping. I can't just shoot a card in there."
Kana had considered using all the offensive magic she could, but she was worried it would wake the beast before they could get into position.
"So we'll set traps and lure it out," she said, pointing to several spots near the cave entrance. "What do you think of this setup?"
Rod thought for a moment and nodded. "It's feasible. I can handle the task of luring it out. However, we don't have much stamina for a prolonged battle, so we need to go all out from the start and finish it in one go."
"I understand," Kana nodded seriously, taking out all her cards from her bag.
She carefully arranged the cards in groups, aiming to maximize the effectiveness of the various magic combinations. Then, with her excellent throwing skills, she placed them in the best positions.
Rod initially wanted the Crab to lure the beast, but he soon had a better idea.
"Summon, Swamp Frogs!"
Two giant toads, taller than a man, appeared. Before their throats could puff up, Rod gave his first command: "No noise!"
The Swamp Frogs immediately stopped their throat movements, making no extra sound.
Rod was pleased to see that there was no additional toxin pollution this time.
"You two, sneak in quietly. When you see the big beast, spray its eyes and nose with poison. Once it wakes up, immediately escape and attack from that position. Got it? Ah... don't croak, don't croak. Got it, then go."
The two Swamp Frogs turned and leaped lightly to the cave entrance, then crept inside as Rod had ordered.
"Using poison? Good idea!" Kana, remembering Lagus's arrogant attitude, muttered, "He deserves it too! We have the antidote anyway."
Rod shook his head. "No way. If Grandma Polysica finds out I used poison on our own people just because I have an antidote, she'll beat me with a broom."
Lagus might be a bit of a brat, but he was still one of their own.
"Ribbit~ Ribbit~"
"Roar~~~"
The sounds of frog croaks and beast roars echoed from the cave entrance, and the ground began to shake.
"Can a juvenile really cause an earthquake?" The tremors weren’t strong enough for Rod to be sure if they were caused by an ability or just the heavy creature moving around.
The croaking sounds faded, and only one Magic Marsh Frog emerged from the cave, while the other had been sent back by the Unicore Beast.
"Ribbit~" The surviving Magic Marsh Frog took its position, waiting for the enemy to emerge.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The tremors grew stronger, and a Unicore Beast, with a single horn, stumbled out of the cave, its face still smeared with purple venom.
The more Rod looked, the more familiar it seemed. It looked a lot like the "Golzack, the Earth Shaker" from a certain tokusatsu show.
It wasn’t as large, though, probably about six or seven meters tall, bigger than Rod’s Treant and Golem but not as massive as the Guild Master’s giant form.
"Roar~~~~"
The Unicore Beast let out a loud roar, a mix of anger and pain.
The Magic Marsh Frog showed no fear, casually spitting a mouthful of venom at it.
Enraged, the Unicore Beast charged toward the Magic Marsh Frog.
Kana saw it step into the trap and immediately cast her spells:
"Restraint of the Tower! Fool’s Mist! Fountain of Prayer! Summoning of Destiny’s Lightning!"
Stone walls, smoke, water whips, and lightning...
A series of spells with blocking and paralyzing effects were cast first, hitting the Unicore Beast.
Then came wind blades, explosive flames, and ice spears.
"Roar—"
"Not done yet!"
Kana kept activating the traps she had set, and when the opportunity arose, she threw a few more cards.
The magical glow completely enveloped the Unicore Beast’s massive form.
For a moment, all that could be heard were Kana’s commands and the sounds of various spells being cast, with the Unicore Beast’s pained roars almost drowned out.
The Magic Marsh Frog continued to diligently spray venom.
By the time Kana’s hand of cards was almost empty, the tremors caused by the Unicore Beast had stopped.
The mountain where the Unicore Beast had lived was now cracked and crumbling, with large boulders rolling down.
Kana, panting heavily, paused to look at the Unicore Beast, now hidden under a cloud of dust and debris: "How is it? Even a real S-class monster..."
Rod pulled her back behind a rock. First, you shouldn’t jinx things; second, it’s best not to get close to a dangerous creature when the situation is unclear.
"Roar!!!"
They were right to be cautious. A furious roar was heard, and the Unicore Beast sent a pile of rocks flying, causing the ground to shake even more violently.
Rocks pelted the giant rock where they were hiding and hit the Magic Marsh Frog, which let out a mournful croak before it could jump away, and was swatted away by the enraged Unicore Beast’s claw.
The Unicore Beast was in a pitiful state. Its horn was shattered, a few teeth were missing, and one eye was swollen shut. Its scales were broken in several places, some looking as if they had been hit by blunt objects and others as if they had been slashed by sharp weapons, with blood gushing out.
Burn marks, frostbite, and venom corrosion were evident everywhere.
It had started out standing tall and proud, but now it could only move on all fours, roaring to the sky.
"Roar~~~"
The Unicore Beast roared again, its tail slamming into the ground, causing the surrounding area to tremble. A nearby mountain collapsed, and Rod immediately pulled Kana onto the back of a River Crab: "Go! Go! Go!"
The Unicore Beast seemed to have entered a second stage of frenzy, so they needed to hide for a bit.
The River Crab ran at full speed, and the Unicore Beast, noticing them, pursued with its heavily wounded body.
"Actually..." Kana stared in shock at the raging Unicore Beast—she had given it her all.
It was rare to find a situation in a typical battle where she could set up such an elaborate trap...
And even this wasn’t enough?
