Chapter 173: Amy and Snape
Chapter 173: Amy and Snape
When Sherlock left the Ministry of Magic, it was already early morning the next day.
He didn’t Apparate directly back to the Leaky Cauldron but instead strolled along the streets of London, buying three breakfasts from a restaurant, and then walked back leisurely.
With Scrimgeour’s promise, he had already achieved the first part of his goal.
Even if Madame Selwyn ultimately refused his entry into the Department of Mysteries, he could still settle for the Auror Office.
While he wouldn’t be able to directly interact with the Department of Mysteries, today’s events at least made him familiar to Madame Selwyn, making future interactions much smoother.
When he returned to the Leaky Cauldron, everything was just as it had been when he left, which was not surprising given that he had only been gone for less than three days.
He greeted Old Tom downstairs, noting no unusual signs in his words or expression, and then made his way to the second floor, pushing open the door to Room 11, where he had been staying.
The room was empty, the blankets on the two beds neatly folded, but there was no sign of Amy.
Sherlock furrowed his brow, a sense of unease creeping over him. He called out softly into the empty room, “Amy.”
But there was no response.
Given Amy’s personality, if she were still in the room, she wouldn’t play such a prank on him. This could only mean she wasn’t there.
Sherlock’s heart sank. He threw the breakfast on the table and hurriedly pushed the door open, heading to Room 12, where Snape was staying. Just as he was about to knock, he faintly heard a conversation inside.
“Amy thinks you should put three of these leaves in the cauldron.”
“I told you, if you want to stay here, you’ll keep quiet while I brew my potion!”
“But Amy is right.”
“...”
“See! You put four leaves in, and it’s ruined.”
“If you hadn’t said anything, I would have put in three instead of four!”
“Why should I listen to Amy just because she said four? Is Amy always right?”
“Shut up! Go play with your pinwheel!”
Sherlock’s furrowed brow gradually relaxed. Hearing the conversation, he couldn’t help but smile. He returned to Room 11, grabbed the breakfast he had bought, and gently knocked on the door of Room 12.
There was a moment of silence, followed by some subtle movement. With his Control Magic, Sherlock could clearly "see" Snape’s sullen face as he draped the Invisibility Cloak over Amy and made her hide under the bed.
About five seconds later, the door opened a crack, and the cold, indifferent face behind it saw Sherlock’s smiling face.
Upon recognizing him, Snape opened the door fully and let Sherlock in.
“Now, take this little girl away immediately! She’s been bothering me for two days!”
Snape’s face was a mix of resentment and anger, but Sherlock, who knew him well, could see that he wasn’t really angry, just saying one thing and meaning another.
“How has Amy been bothering you? Telling you the correct way to brew your potion, and you’re throwing a tantrum because you don’t want to listen?” Sherlock teased.
Snape’s face stiffened, and he coldly snorted, saying nothing more.
Amy, hiding under the bed, also heard Sherlock's voice. She crawled out and threw the large Invisibility Cloak on the ground.
Amy held the pinwheel in her hand, her clear, bright eyes meeting Sherlock's.
"Did John have any good luck this time?"
Sherlock took off the amulet he always wore around his neck and put it back on Amy.
"It might be more powerful than you think, Amy. It not only brought me luck but also led me to your father."
Amy's lips curved slightly, which was already a smile for her.
"Amy knows Dad will be fine. When he left, Amy felt the same as before."
Sherlock patted her head and placed the breakfast on the table.
"Let's eat first. I'm done with my business. Tomorrow, we can take Amy to the amusement park."
Amy didn't really understand what an amusement park was, but she was happy that Sherlock was willing to go out with her.
"Will Tobias come too?"
Sherlock paused for a moment, remembering that Tobias was Snape's alias.
He glared at Snape, who was trying to salvage the potion that had gone bad.
"Are you going? Will you join us tomorrow?"
Snape looked at them with a dark expression and took the breakfast Sherlock had bought for him.
"Do you think what we need to do now is babysit and take a little girl to an amusement park?"
Amy blinked.
"Does Tobias not like amusement parks?"
Snape snorted derisively.
"Who, besides ignorant children, would truly enjoy that boring place?"
"But John said the amusement park is fun."
"So he and you, an ignorant child, have nothing different. That's why you get along so well!"
"But Tobias is nice to Amy too."
"Nonsense! I wish you would disappear from my sight right now!" Snape's voice had a hint of frustration.
Sherlock scowled as he ate his sandwich, listening to their argument, which included him as well.
"I know what we should be doing. Do you think I've been idle these past few days? Regarding Lily, I haven't found a definite lead, but I have a direction now."
Snape suddenly looked up, staring intently at Sherlock.
"You're not lying to me!"
Sherlock helped Amy unwrap her sandwich.
"Believe it or not, do I have a reason to lie to you?"
Snape's eyes sparkled, and he clenched his fists slightly.
"You said history can't be changed."
"History can't be changed, but we can add our own elements to it. What can't be changed are the events that have already occurred and are known and recognized by people in the future. These cannot and will not be altered."
Sherlock wiped the salad sauce from the corner of Amy's mouth with a napkin.
"And a large part of this discovery is thanks to Amy."
Although Amy didn't fully understand what Sherlock was saying, she could tell he was praising her and couldn't help but feel a bit smug.
"So, are you willing to go to the amusement park with Amy tomorrow?" Sherlock raised an eyebrow and looked at Snape.
Snape was silent for a moment, then, as if forcing the words out through his teeth, he said,
"I'll go."
Sherlock patted his shoulder, satisfied.
"That's the spirit! Uncle Tobias."
