Chapter 1722: A War with No Winners (Part 172)
Chapter 1722: A War with No Winners (Part 172)
This statement wasn't wrong; it was just applicable to a very small minority of girls who were truly in love.
If it weren't for the fact that Albert genuinely felt the sentiment of "a woman's joy in pleasing her confidant" from Isabella, he would have most likely dismissed it as nonsense.
As soon as he entered the living room, Albert immediately sensed the peculiar atmosphere. The girls seemed to be getting along well, but his intuition told him that it was merely a superficial peace they were maintaining. It was evident from the fact that Valeria didn't sit next to Katherine but chose the sofa farthest from Hermione.
However, Albert had to pretend he didn't notice anything, after all, the girls rarely had the chance to meet each other.
As soon as he sat down, Janila took the initiative to sit next to him and asked if he would be passing through Spain during his world tour next year. She even offered to guide him around the magical world of Spain, seemingly hinting that he should take the initiative to be a good host and personally show the girls around the British Wizarding World. Louise, sitting next to Janila, also seemed to understand her intention, as her eyes sparkled with excitement.
"You're all so beautiful and popular that if I take you around the British Wizarding World, we'll definitely be on the front page of the Prophet Daily the next day," Albert couldn't pretend he didn't understand, especially with the other girls looking at them expectantly, clearly hoping he would offer to be their guide.
"We can use Polyjuice Potion for disguise," Katherine, who was discussing the American Wizarding World with Hermione, suddenly suggested.
"You should decide where you want to go first. To be honest, my knowledge of the British Wizarding World is limited, so perhaps Isabella can give you some suggestions," Albert said. Although he had been to many places, he felt that aside from Hogwarts, there probably weren't many places worth visiting in the British Wizarding World.
However, he didn't need to worry about this, as the girls had already made preparations, as evidenced by Katherine having the Polyjuice Potion ready.
In the afternoon, Isabella and Katrina visited the estate villa and were very satisfied with the bold dress designed by Hermione.
After seeing Hermione's carefully designed "dress," Janila, who had been hesitant, also made her decision.
She didn't want to lose to anyone.
After the girls had dinner at the estate, Albert sent Hermione home, as she didn't plan to stay overnight.
Instead of returning to the estate immediately, he stayed to chat with Hermione for a while.
"It seems like you're getting along well with the other girls," Albert said.
"I'm not stupid; I won't cause any trouble for you," Hermione replied.
She could tell that the friendliness shown by Albert's other lovers was mostly an act, but so what? They rarely had the chance to meet, and it was unlikely that any of the girls had such low emotional intelligence that they would leave a bad impression on Albert.
"What were you talking about earlier?" Hermione asked.
"I was discussing the American Wizarding World with Katherine," Albert replied. Hermione smiled and added honey to his cup of flower tea before taking her own cup and sitting next to him. "No wonder you don't like that restrictive country; it does sound very unfree."
Albert didn't say much about this matter but instead talked to Hermione about American House Elf employment.
"American Wizards are ruthlessly exploiting the rights of House Elves!" Hermione was relieved that Katherine was willing to offer slightly higher wages to House Elves, but she was furious that they could only get shockingly low salaries.
"You can't expect American Wizards to grant House Elves the same treatment as humans right away. And if a store needs to pay a House Elf the same salary as a Wizard, I think they would rather hire a Wizard than a House Elf in the American Wizarding World," Albert wasn't surprised by this situation. After seeing Hermione's reaction, he reminded her, "Don't forget about Dobby's situation. Without Dumbledore, Dobby might not even be able to find a job."
"But you were also willing to give Dobby a job, weren't you?" Hermione asked, suppressing her restlessness.
"In fact, even I wouldn't casually employ a House Elf with an unknown background to help me with housework. They can probably only handle less important tasks," Albert looked into Hermione's eyes and said, "And although it might sound a bit boastful, how many people like me and Dumbledore do you think there are in this world?"
Hermione was speechless!
Albert was right; there were very few Wizards in the British Wizarding World who were as willing as he and Dumbledore to treat House Elves gently. Harry could be considered half of one, as he was willing to employ Dobby, whom he knew, but even that was limited to Dobby alone.
"So, Hermione, you not only need to liberate House Elves but also find them jobs. Otherwise, what if the liberated House Elves can't find work like Dobby?" Albert said seriously, "Similar situations have happened in America before."
Hermione suddenly felt lost, as she realized Albert was right.
Her decision to liberate House Elves was made in the heat of the moment, and now she seemed unable to do anything right.
"Fortunately, the upcoming Avalon should be able to provide jobs for several House Elves," Albert patted Hermione's head gently and reassured her, "So you still have plenty of time to solve this problem."
Albert didn't know if the House Elves would be liberated, and he was even less clear about why Hermione eventually became the Minister of Magic.
Whether she gave up on the idea of liberating House Elves after realizing it was impractical or if she aimed to become the Minister of Magic to better liberate them was unknown.
Regardless, Albert didn't want Hermione to be hurt because of this.
"You're right; it was indeed an impulsive decision I made to establish the House Elf Liberation Front, but I believe it can be gradually improved," Hermione admitted, although reluctantly.
She knew that Albert was most likely correct, and if she did liberate the House Elves, would British Wizards really be willing to employ them?
Most likely not! Wizards as open-minded as Albert and Dumbledore were rare in the world, and what about the long-term unemployment of liberated House Elves?
Would House Elves who couldn't find work for a long time come to resent her?
Probably so!
She was indeed too naive.
