Chapter 172: You Must Think Making the Headlines Is Easy, Right, Harry?
Chapter 172: You Must Think Making the Headlines Is Easy, Right, Harry?
After the roar of the crowd in the Great Hall finally died down, Ivan released his tightly clasped ears.
The Great Hall fell into a brief silence, with only Harry and Ron standing awkwardly under the gaze of the onlookers.
At that moment, a mocking voice came from the Slytherin head table.
"Potter, it seems you've managed to make a big splash again", Malfoy said, approaching with Goyle and Crabbe. He gave Harry a mocking look and then paused to glance at Ron.
"Weasley, I bet your father is hating you right now. He might lose his job and be forced to scuttle out of the Ministry of Magic."
With that, Malfoy burst into laughter, and Goyle and Crabbe joined in with their own foolish grins.
Ron's face turned beet red with anger. He was so furious that he ignored the fact they were in the dining hall, yanking out his bandaged wand and pointing it at Malfoy.
"Grow your teeth like a bat!"
Malfoy was taken aback, scrambling to draw his wand in response.
But to his surprise, nothing happened when Ron cast the spell. Only a faint black mist drifted from the tip of Ron's wand.
"Weasley, what are you doing? Giving us a magic show?" Malfoy sneered.
Ron was so angry he wanted to throw his wand away. Ever since it was broken by the Whomping Willow the night before, it hadn't worked properly.
For a moment, Ron was ready to rush over and punch Malfoy, but Harry and Hermione held him back. Starting a fight in the Great Hall was not a wise move, especially if they didn't want to end up in detention.
Ivan ignored their "friendly" interaction, knowing it wouldn't come to a fight. He waved his wand to tidy up the mess on the table.
He also picked up the letter, planning to use the Quick-Quotes Quill to reply once he returned to the dormitory.
However, Ivan hadn't expected Malfoy to become bolder, or perhaps his success in mocking Ron had inflated his confidence.
"Hals!" Malfoy called out, stepping forward and picking up the Daily Prophet from the table. After glancing at the headline, he said, "I didn't know you lived in Knockturn Alley until I read this. Isn't that where the poor and dark wizards live? And you hang out with a bunch of werewolves."
Ivan's brow furrowed, but Hermione was quicker, rebuking Malfoy.
"Shut up, Malfoy! There's nothing shameful about living in Knockturn Alley. Ivan earned the highest honor in the magical world, the Order of Merlin, through his own efforts. Can you say the same?"
"So what? My father says the wizards who live in Knockturn Alley are like rats in the sewers!" Malfoy retorted, his neck stiffening.
Thinking back to the recent lectures his father had given him, Malfoy felt a surge of irritation. Just as he was about to continue, Ivan cut him off.
"Do you only rely on your father, Malfoy?" Ivan said coolly, tapping his wand in his palm. "I thought by second year, you'd be a bit more independent, instead of blindly following your father's words."
Malfoy, red with anger, was about to defend himself, but Ivan didn't give him the chance, mocking him further.
"By the way, you had no idea I was chatting with your father the other day! He told me that if your grades don't improve this year, you'll probably amount to nothing."
Ivan spouted a bunch of nonsense, combining it with the old Malfoy’s dissatisfaction with his son in Borgin and Burkes, and managed to fool Draco Malfoy.
Malfoy was initially unwilling to believe Ivan’s words, especially that Ivan could chat casually with his father, but at home, his father had indeed scolded him for this.
"Still don’t believe it? Haven’t you heard your dad mention it? Hurry up and go home and ask him!" Ivan said harshly, noticing Malfoy’s wavering.
"Do you know Malfoy’s father, Ivan?"
In the corridor on the way to Herbology class in the morning, Hermione curiously pressed for more details about what had just happened. Harry and Ron were also puzzled. They hadn’t expected Ivan to have any connection with the elder Malfoy.
"No, we’re not really familiar. We’ve only met once!" Ivan explained, understanding what Hermione was getting at.
"Then how could you say that just now?" Hermione’s eyes widened.
"What’s the big deal? You guys were chatting with Minister Fudge last year." Ivan said nonchalantly.
Harry and Ron were speechless, and Hermione rolled her eyes. If they remembered correctly, they had only briefly met Fudge and exchanged a few words. Was that really considered chatting?
Having answered their questions, Ivan quickly walked into the greenhouse.
Soon, Professor Sprout, with a bandaged arm, walked in from the outer lawn, looking unhappy.
This wasn’t just because Lockhart was following her around, trying to impart some random Herbology knowledge.
It was also because, while treating the Whomping Willow, Lockhart had cast a so-called healing spell that sent the tree into a frenzy. To calm it down, her arm had been hit, though fortunately, the injury wasn’t severe.
However, Lockhart was completely oblivious, still acting as if he were a peacock spreading its feathers, confidently walking to the front of Professor Sprout and even blocking her path as he loudly addressed the class.
"Hello everyone! I just demonstrated how to treat the Whomping Willow to Professor Sprout! But I don’t want you to think I’m better at Herbology than she is! I’ve just happened to encounter a few of these peculiar plants during my travels..."
Lockhart was about to say more, but Professor Sprout cut him off without hesitation, loudly instructing all the students to head to the third greenhouse and start the class immediately!
Ivan hurriedly followed the crowd into the classroom.
As Harry was about to follow, Lockhart stopped him.
"Professor Sprout, may I have a word with Harry? Just a couple of minutes! I’m sure you don’t mind?" Lockhart said, turning to Professor Sprout.
Professor Sprout did mind, but Lockhart ignored her and took Harry by the arm, leading him aside as he spoke earnestly.
"You must think making the headlines is easy, right, Harry?"
"I don’t understand what you’re talking about, Professor. What do you mean?" Harry was completely confused and didn’t understand what Lockhart was getting at.
