Chapter 1719: A War Without Victors (Part 169)
Chapter 1719: A War Without Victors (Part 169)
"How's your body feeling?" Louise asked with a smile as she entered the living room from the kitchen, addressing Janila who was daydreaming in a recliner by the fireplace.
"Not great, it still hurts," Janila replied, shifting her gaze from the fireplace. She looked at the lavish dinner Louise had set on the table and frowned slightly. "Is Albert not joining us for dinner tonight?"
"He seems to have some matters to attend to. He'll be dining with his partners in Avalon," Louise said, as if anticipating Janila's questions. "Isabella needs to stay home to take care of Little Alice, and Katrina will come by after nine."
"What about Katherine and Valeria?" Janila asked, throwing off the thin blanket that covered her and slowly getting up from the recliner to move to the dining table.
"They're holed up in the study, poring over Albert's potion notes," Louise replied, moving the exquisite and abundant dinner to Janila's side. "Eat while it's hot, it won't taste as good when it's cold."
"Are Katherine and Valeria still researching that so-called beauty potion?" Janila scooped up some Spanish paella with her spoon and murmured, "It tastes good, but Spanish food can be a bit monotonous."
"Albert is equally skilled in potions, and his potion notebooks rarely disappoint."
Louise had also been fortunate enough to browse through those notebooks, but her interest in them was minimal, so she didn't pay as much attention as Katherine and Valeria did.
After swallowing her food, Janila asked with confusion, "I thought the research on the beauty potion had hit a roadblock and there weren't any new developments?"
"Who knows, Albert always manages to surprise us," Louise said with a wave of her wand, conjuring an ordinary-looking bottle and pouring a full glass into Janila's cup.
Janila looked at the drink in front of her with curiosity, took a small sip, and frowned. "This doesn't really look like wine."
"This is a wine Albert brewed himself, supposedly capable of preserving youth," Louise explained, pouring herself a glass and taking a sip. "But it requires long-term consumption to be effective."
"So, you..." Janila opened her mouth slightly, looking as if she wanted to say something but stopped.
"Of course not," Louise turned to look at the two who had just entered the living room. "Any luck?"
"There is, but not much," Katherine said, pulling out a chair and sitting across from them, appearing a bit dejected, not at all like someone with a big discovery.
"We found several versions of the beauty potion in the notebook, but their effects are almost identical," Valeria explained. "The version we're currently using is the cheapest in terms of ingredient costs. By the way, Youth and Love has also been revised several times, but..."
"Youth and Love?" Janila paused for a moment.
"This one..." Louise raised her glass to explain.
"The effects are slightly better than before, but it's unlikely to have the magical properties of the Elixir of Immortality made with the Magic Stone," Katherine added, having seen the limits of the beauty potion and 'Youth and Love' in Albert's notes.
To be honest, this made Katherine feel a bit disappointed.
The amazing Albert had given her too many unrealistic fantasies.
However, reality had a cruel way of reminding her that even Albert struggled to create incredible miracles in a short time.
"Albert must have gathered all these magical ingredients to develop more effective potions," Valeria observed, noticing Katherine's disappointment. She smiled and steered the conversation in a different direction, "Even though we're just an afterthought, it's still a great opportunity, right?"
"Does this wine really work?"
Janila, unconcerned about Katherine's feelings, stared intently at the bottle before her and asked, "How can I get my hands on it? Do I need to find the recipe and brew it myself?"
No woman could resist the allure of eternal youth, not even Janila, who had just come of age this year.
"The brewing process for the Elixir of Youth and Love is highly complex, and it's not something ordinary wizards can easily replicate," Louise explained with a smile. "Think of it as similar to the Elixir of Life."
"It's a great privilege to have such treatment. No wonder so many girls want to be Albert's lovers," Janila sighed, wiping her mouth with a handkerchief after finishing her dinner. "It would be even better if Albert could spend more time with us."
"As much as I'd love for Albert to be with me all the time, he has his own matters to attend to," Louise interrupted, cutting short Janila's unrealistic thoughts.
"Of course, I understand that. But... I mean, we need time to nurture our relationship in the beginning," Janila said, looking around at the other girls. "Alright, I know what you're thinking. Only Isabella gets that kind of treatment, and we're just his lovers?"
"Yes, I'm glad you understand that," Louise said with relief. "Don't try to take up all his time."
"You really are... prepared to be his lover," Janila muttered, glancing around the room. "By the way, why did you all become his lovers?"
"Katherine has a direct interest in Albert, and they even have a child together. Becoming his lover is a way to further solidify their relationship," Valeria explained, seeing the situation clearly. "Moreover, Albert is an incredible man. Once you've invested in him, it's only natural to invest more to reap greater benefits. Otherwise, how can you expect to receive any rewards from him?"
"You missed one point," Katherine added with a smile. "Who could refuse a handsome, gentle lover?"
"That makes perfect sense."
"I consider myself an afterthought. To move on from the past, I used my advantages to find a good man and sell myself for a good price," Valeria openly admitted, not shying away from these facts. She was proud of her discernment and never foolish enough to believe she became a co-owner of the Witch Beauty Shop solely based on her abilities.
"What about you, Janila?" Katherine asked directly.
"My situation is similar to yours," Janila replied after a moment of reflection. "As you all know, our family has a similar arrangement."
"Being someone's lover?"
"It's a mutually beneficial arrangement, just like yours. Through this, I can also gain an outstanding offspring, Albert's protection, and... a share of the benefits," Janila explained.
"No wonder you're from a vampire clan," Valeria whispered in awe.
"We only have partial vampire blood," Janila corrected. "We're not vampires."
