Chapter 171: The Overseas Mission
Chapter 171: The Overseas Mission
"When can I start taking on S-rank missions?" On their way to the Hokage Building, Obito thought about Kakashi's heart-piercing words from the day before and couldn't help but sigh.
"Even on a C-rank mission, we didn't encounter any ninjas. It's obviously not the kind of mission I want to take on."
"You can do one tonight if you want." Kakashi replied.
"Why?" Obito asked, puzzled.
"I dreamt about it." Kakashi said nonchalantly.
"Even Chunin have a hard time participating in S-rank missions. Do you really expect to complete one before you've even graduated?"
"Damn you, Kakashi! Just because you can't do it doesn't mean I can't. Wait till I become a Chunin, and I'll definitely have the opportunity to take on S-rank missions." Obito's fighting spirit ignited.
Since their efficient completion of D-rank missions had earned them the privilege of accepting C-rank missions, Obito reasoned that if they maintained their high efficiency with C-rank missions, they would soon be able to take on even more advanced missions.
"Teacher Mu Yue, please make sure to accept a challenging mission later. Let's show them our strength." Obito said, full of fighting spirit.
"Hopefully, there will be some fighting involved." Might Guy, who had been doing manual labor for two days, was also itching for some action.
Kakashi had no particular preferences regarding the mission type, having already completed numerous C-rank missions himself.
Mu Yue smiled and nodded in agreement. The kind of mission that Obito and Might Guy wanted was precisely what he desired as well.
"These are the available C-rank missions at the moment." The registration ninja laid out several scrolls for Mu Yue to browse through.
"Subdue the bandits hiding in Hawk Mouth Mountain, eliminate the unknown fierce beast harassing Hasu Village, escort the client back to the capital of the Rice Country..."
Mu Yue scanned through the options. The missions that clearly indicated combat mostly involved subduing bandits or driving away fierce beasts. He skipped past those.
While he craved battle, fighting ordinary people or wild beasts offered him no benefits.
"Let's take on the mission to escort the client back to the Rice Country." Mu Yue suggested after a moment's thought.
"Are you sure you want to choose this mission? The situation in the ninja world is a bit chaotic right now. Although the Rice Country doesn't have a ninja village, traveling abroad at this time does carry a certain level of risk." The registration ninja reminded them.
In fact, he felt that Mu Yue would be better off accepting the missions to subdue bandits or drive away fierce beasts, as many of those missions were located within the Fire Country, making them safer options.
"We're not afraid of risks; we crave them." Obito's eyes lit up at the registration ninja's warning.
"Thank you for the reminder, but we'll take this one. I believe that our abilities will enable us to handle any potential crises." Mu Yue said with a smile.
He had specifically chosen this mission because it involved traveling abroad, and he wouldn't have selected it otherwise.
The registration ninja didn't try to dissuade them further. He helped the group with the necessary paperwork and informed them of the client's current location.
"What kind of risks do you think we'll encounter? Ambushes by enemy ninjas?" Obito asked excitedly as they left the Hokage Building.
"You've been reading too many novels, Obito. You won't encounter the kinds of crises you're imagining on a C-rank mission." Kakashi sighed.
Ambushes by enemy ninjas? On a C-rank mission, encountering ninjas was grounds for reporting back to the village.
The group then made their way to the inn where the client was staying and met with the person who had posted the mission.
"Are you the ninjas who accepted the mission? You're all so young and talented." A middle-aged man of considerable wealth seemed slightly taken aback when he saw Obito, Kakashi, and the others, but he quickly recovered and praised them with a smile.
"I am Numata Yoshihisa, the one who requested this mission. These are my wife and daughter." Numata Yoshihisa introduced himself briefly.
"I am Mu Yue, and I will be the leader of this mission."
"First place? Then you must be very strong, big brother." Numata Yoshihisa's daughter blinked her big eyes and said.
"Of course!" Obito boasted proudly.
"I don't remember you being first place when I was in school," Kakashi suddenly interjected.
"Hey, are you saying you were boasting just now?" The little girl furrowed her brows, looking puzzled.
"That's because you graduated early," Obito quickly explained.
He went on to say that he had also come in first twice, and that the last year had the most weight anyway.
Although the little girl didn't quite understand what Obito was explaining, she found his flushed face and animated gestures amusing and broke into a peal of laughter, lightening the atmosphere around them.
After the brief introductions, it was time to get down to business. Upon learning that Numata Yoshihisa was ready to depart, Mu Yue suggested they set off immediately.
Considering that Numata Yoshihisa was traveling with his wife and daughter, he had prepared a horse-drawn carriage for the journey.
Numata Yoshihisa and his family rode in the carriage, while Mu Yue and his disciples ran alongside.
The carriage was no match for the speed of ninjas; even without Mu Yue, Obito and the others could easily keep up while chatting casually.
When they stopped for the night, the group gathered to chat, and it was then that Mu Yue learned why Numata Yoshihisa was so adept at navigating social situations.
Numata Yoshihisa was a merchant, but although he did business in the Fire Country, he was actually from the Rice Country, and his entire family were natives of that land.
Due to the ongoing war, Numata Yoshihisa was concerned about the safety of his journey home, so he had posted a C-rank mission in Konoha.
"I wonder when the ninja world will finally achieve peace," he sighed. "With the four great nations at war, business is bound to suffer."
The frequent wars were a nuisance to peaceful merchants like him. It had been less than a decade since the last great war, and now they were plunged into another conflict between powerful nations.
"Don't worry, Uncle. As long as you stay in our Fire Country, you'll be safe. With the might of Konoha's ninjas, no other nation can invade us," Obito assured him, thumping his chest confidently.
"The strength of Konoha's ninjas is indeed trustworthy," Numata Yoshihisa nodded in agreement. This was a fact acknowledged throughout the ninja world.
The escort mission proceeded smoothly, and until they left the country, Mu Yue and his group encountered no attacks. There were no signs of ninjas, let alone bandits lying in wait.
This left Obito disappointed. "Where's the risk you mentioned? All we've been doing is escorting, traveling, resting, and training. It's no different from our usual routine, except for the chance to tease the little miss here."
"This is what a C-rank mission looks like. Your imagination is too wild," Kakashi remarked.
He had undertaken numerous C-rank missions and had never once encountered a ninja during any of them.
However, things became more interesting once they crossed the border. Occasionally, they would come across foolish bandits attempting to rob them, but they were no match for Might Guy, who would send them flying with a single kick.
On the first night after leaving the country, as Mu Yue was contemplating his combination jutsu, there was a sudden rustling in the leaves of a large tree not far from where they were resting.
"Are they trying to lure us out so blatantly?" Mu Yue lifted his glasses nonchalantly. The White Eye was indeed a convenient ability.
