Chapter 171: Remember, There Are No Giants at Hogwarts
Chapter 171: Remember, There Are No Giants at Hogwarts
Kyle sat in the common room, his eyes glued to the Marauder's Map. About ten minutes later, the name Chilo finally appeared.
Kyle's eyes lit up, and he got up and left the common room.
Instead of heading to the Great Hall, Chilo was meandering through the castle on the Marauder's Map.
Kyle followed discreetly, maintaining a corridor's distance to avoid detection. With the map, he didn't worry about losing his target.
After a meandering journey, Chilo finally stopped, and Kyle, after a quick glance around, hid in an empty classroom nearby.
A few minutes later, Chilo's name started moving swiftly toward the Great Hall.
Once certain Chilo was far away, Kyle left the empty classroom, hurried across an empty side corridor, and rushed to the spot where Chilo had been lingering.
As he turned the corner, a putrid stench assaulted his nostrils. The smell was more nauseating than anything Mickle had brewed in his potions, and despite Kyle's preparation, it made his vision darken.
Then he heard a low grumble and the sound of heavy footsteps.
A hulking figure, twelve feet tall, was lumbering toward him.
Its skin was dull and gray like granite, with a tiny head perched atop its massive body, giving it a cumbersome and stupid appearance. Its legs were short and sturdy like tree stumps, ending in flat, coarse, calloused feet.
The sickening stench emanated from its body.
Kyle immediately recognized the creature as the giant he sought—a mountain giant, the largest of its kind.
"Jackpot!" Kyle exclaimed, taking a couple of excited steps forward.
The giant noticed Kyle's movement and roared, quickening its pace.
As they converged, the giant roared again and raised the wooden club in its hand, as if to swat the pesky insect blocking its path.
"Wait, I can take you to food!" Kyle shouted.
His voice had the desired effect; the giant froze, tilting its walnut-sized head as it tried to process the words.
"You're hungry," Kyle repeated. "I'll take you to food."
"Eat! Food!"
This time, the giant understood.
It lowered its club and grunted unintelligibly.
"Yes, food!" Kyle said, forcing himself to ignore the stench and projecting as friendly a demeanor as possible. "Come with me, I'll take you there!"
He took a step backward, and the giant followed.
"Perfect!"
Kyle's heart leaped for joy. He quickly pulled out a box, opened it, and placed it on the ground.
Now, he just needed the giant to step on the box. Holding his breath, he took two steps back.
...
But then, the unexpected happened.
"Ahh!"
A piercing scream made the giant pause, its raised foot hovering in the air.
It turned clumsily, blinking its stupid eyes as it tried to locate the source of the sound.
Soon, it spotted a tiny brown figure—Hermione.
"Ahhh!"
Hermione's scream intensified as she realized the giant had seen her.
The giant pounded its palm against its head, and in its ugly little eyes, Hermione's form morphed into a round, angry-looking bird.
In an instant, the giant's rationality vanished.
Forgetting about Kyle, it started walking toward Hermione.
"I..."
"!"
Kyle was stunned.
For reasons unknown, the giant seemed fixated on Hermione, ignoring Kyle's calls.
The situation worsened as Hermione, overcome with fear, stumbled and fell to the ground, her legs giving out beneath her.
Cowering against the wall, she appeared on the verge of fainting.
The giant took menacing steps towards her, brandishing the wooden club in its hand.
"What in the world is going on here!" Kyle exclaimed, raising his wand.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
The wooden club flew out of the giant's hand, soaring high into the air before slowly rotating and descending to strike its owner on the head.
With a loud crash, the giant wobbled in place before collapsing face-first onto the ground, the impact reverberating through the entire corridor.
Hermione sat there, dumbfounded, and asked, "I-is it... dead?"
"Psh, and here I am, doing you a favor!" Kyle replied, taking quick strides towards them to check on the giant's condition.
Fortunately, it still had a pulse.
Kyle breathed a sigh of relief.
He truly hadn't wanted to resort to such measures if he could help it.
While the giant was simple-minded, it had at least understood his words. Who knew if this blow would erase whatever little intellect it possessed.
That wasn't an outcome Kyle wished to see.
But there was no use dwelling on it now.
As Kyle summoned the box from the ground, preparing to stuff the giant inside, he hesitated and instead pulled out his wand.
"Vento Cleaning!"
"Scourgify!"
He cast several cleaning spells in succession, ridding the giant's body of grime and lessening the putrid stench considerably.
Kyle had intended to continue, but the sound of hurried footsteps approaching made him abandon the idea. Hastily, he stuffed the giant into the box.
"Remember, you didn't see anything," Kyle said sternly to Hermione. "There was no giant; you just tripped and fell. Understand?"
Hermione, wide-eyed, nodded dumbly.
"Good."
Carrying the box nonchalantly, Kyle helped Hermione to her feet as if nothing had happened.
"Hermione!"
"Thank goodness, we've found you at last!"
Harry and Ron rushed towards them from the other end of the corridor.
"There's a giant in the basement classroom!" Harry panted. "Professor Dumbledore instructed everyone to return to their dormitories. You... oh, Kyle, you're here too?"
"Yes, I was on my way to the Great Hall when I happened upon Miss Granger here," Kyle replied with a smile.
"So, there really is a giant? How did a giant even get into Hogwarts?" Kyle asked, his tone incredulous.
"Yes, I'm not joking!" Ron exclaimed. "Professor Quirrell told us during the Halloween feast, and then he fainted."
"I see... Well, that's certainly dangerous."
Kyle's expression turned solemn. "Giants are beyond our ability to handle. I'm off to the tower; you two should head back as well."
Throughout this exchange, Hermione remained silent, her eyes fixed on Kyle, her mind reeling in shock.
His calm expression, his composed tone...
Had she not experienced the entire incident firsthand, she would've believed every word he said.
Why was he so adept at this?
Could this really be the same person who was top of their year?
