Chapter 171: Armed Rebirth
Chapter 171: Armed Rebirth
Tenma Tsukuyomi, the twin brother of Yami Yugi. When he first appeared in the side story, Yugi and his friends also mistook him for Yami due to the latter's spiritual control at that time.
He is also the one that Begulus referred to as the "Perfect Duelist."
Mizawa and Asuka held their breath. The sudden duel, and moreover, against a legendary opponent—before their enrollment, they might have instinctively thought that facing such legends would be hopeless.
But now, things were different.
Come to think of it, there seemed to be more than one or two legends that had been crushed by You Xuan. The most representative victims were the Maze Brothers; they probably didn't want to touch their cards for a while after their encounter. In their eyes, You Xuan's image had unknowingly transformed from a "unique honors student" to someone who "wouldn't be surprising if he brutally defeated legends."
Mizawa was also very curious about where this guy's limits truly lay.
"Duel!" x2
[Tsukuyomi: 4000 LP]
[You Xuan: 4000 LP]
"Then I'll go first. Draw." Tsukuyomi played two cards from his hand.
"I'll summon a monster in face-down defense mode and then set another card in the back row. End turn."
"My turn, draw." You Xuan said.
After drawing, he played a Pot of Cronos as a respectful gesture.
"Magic card 'Greed Jar,' draw two cards from the deck."
After drawing, he immediately summoned his first monster.
"I summon 'Blade Knight'!"
[Blade Knight: ATK 1600]
It may be hard for current players to imagine, but this unassuming Blade Knight was once a powerful card in the meta.
With a base attack of 1600, it barely qualified as a competent low-level beatstick. Its first effect boosts its attack by 400 points when the player has one or fewer cards in their hand.
Blade Knight thrived in an environment plagued by "hand destruction" strategies, where it was common for duelists to have their hand resources depleted. Thus, many times, Blade Knight would hit the field with a substantial 2000 ATK, making it a very efficient beatstick.
Additionally, it had a second effect that negated the effects of Flip monsters destroyed by battle.
In the early days of Duel Monsters, Flip monsters were an essential component. The once-perennial banned cards like Metamorphosis Jar, Fiber Jar, and Magician of Faith were all commonly seen as game-turning Flip monsters, with slightly less powerful ones being various Flip monsters that blew up cards or returned monsters to the hand.
In such an environment, Blade Knight's second effect was indeed practical.
Another important point was that it was a Light attribute monster. With these advantages combined, Blade Knight earned its place in Light and Dark-themed Chaos decks.
You Xuan: "Blade Knight attacks the face-down monster."
Tsukuyomi's face-down monster was flipped, revealing a bespectacled elf girl with pointed ears, a short skirt, stockings, and a magic book in her arms.
[Book of Moon Elf: DEF 1500] (Original card)
An original card used by Tsukuyomi in the manga. Unlike his brother Yami, many of Tenma Tsukuyomi's cards never received physical prints.
On the other hand, Yami Yugi's Three Wicked Gods and his original Barbaros cards received physical releases early on, enjoying favorable treatment.
"Book of Moon Elf's effect activates when it's sent to the graveyard. I draw a card from my deck," Tsukuyomi explained, "Since it's not a Flip monster, Blade Knight's effect won't negate it."
The short-lived bespectacled elf girl vanished into light particles under the relentless blade, and Tsukuyomi drew a card.
You Xuan spared another glance at the vanquished elf girl.
Book of Moon Elf:
It states, "When this card is sent to the graveyard, draw 1 card." There's no restriction specifying that it must be on the field when sent to the graveyard.
This card seems pretty good.
You Xuan drew four more cards in one breath.
"I set four cards. End turn."
"Four set cards."
Tsukuyomi furrowed his brows slightly.
"In the End Phase, I'll activate one of my set cards.
"Of course, five and six," Tsukuyomi said.
The dice tumbled, coming to a stop on the number four.
"A one-in-three chance, and it looks like I didn't get it," Tsukuyomi commented, unfazed. "So, I'll send the top four cards of my deck to the Graveyard."
He drew four cards and sent them to his Graveyard.
"My turn, draw," Tsukuyomi continued. "I activate the Magic Card 'Angel's Charity' to draw three cards from my deck and discard two cards from my hand."
Tsukuyomi drew from his deck. Even in the original story, where Greed-filled Angels were commonplace, Tenma Tsukuyomi stood out as a notable enthusiast of 'Angel's Charity', and was one of the rare characters to play two 'Angel's Charity' cards in a single turn.
"Then I'll Normal Summon 'Sage Chiron'," Tsukuyomi announced.
[Sage Chiron: ATK 1800]
"Sage Chiron can destroy your opponent's Magic or Trap Cards by discarding a Magic Card from your hand," Tsukuyomi explained. "I'll destroy the second face-down card from the left."
He discarded a card, and Chiron's staff glowed with a red light, locking onto one of You Xuan's face-down cards.
"Then, reveal the face-down card," You Xuan said. "Trap Card 'Breakthrough Skill', which negates the effects of one of your opponent's monsters until the end of this turn. I'll negate the effects of 'Sage Chiron'!"
The Trap Card was flipped, and the red glow on the Centaur Sage's staff faded away, its effect halted.
"You dodged that," Tsukuyomi remarked. "But the Magic Card I discarded was 'Compensation Booklet', which lets me draw two more cards. Now, I activate the Magic Card 'Monster Reborn'! With this effect, I revive 'Light Machine - Horakthy' from my Graveyard!"
"The monster sent to the Graveyard by the effect of the Sixth Sense?" The ace commentator, Mizawa, continued his diligent duty. "Summoning the highest-level monster right at the start is quite something."
Light Machine - Horakthy was an angelic creature of Level 8 with an Attack of 2900, only 100 points less than the noble Blue-Eyes White Dragon, making it a formidable force.
"Then, Counter Trap - Divine Wrath!"
Without hesitation, You Xuan played the unbeatable Godly Elder.
"Pay 2000 Life Points to negate the Summon of a monster, or the activation of an effect that includes the Special Summon of a monster, and destroy it!" You Xuan declared. "I negate the activation of 'Monster Reborn'!"
[You Xuan: 4000 LP → 2000 LP]
The all-powerful Godly Elder stretched out his hand imperiously, signaling "no." Divine lightning struck, instantly shattering the symbol of Monster Reborn. The angel, whose entrance had been thwarted, dissipated back into shadows.
"You negated the appearance of Light Machine - Horakthy decisively," Tsukuyomi mused.
"As the rumors suggested, you are indeed a Duelist who values disrupting your opponent and setting up resistance," he concluded.
"Then, I'll activate this card," Tsukuyomi said, holding up a card in his hand.
"Magic Card 'Armament Rebirth'! Special Summon all Equip-Magic and Trap Cards in your Graveyard as monsters with 500 ATK and DEF each!" (Original Card)
Mizawa: "?"
Asuka: "?"
What on earth is this?
Summoning Equip-Magic and Trap Cards as monsters?
This was another one of Tsukuyomi's original cards from the manga, and it was one of his key tactical cards. However, given its abstract effect, it was understandable that it didn't have a physical card.
"Based on this effect," Tsukuyomi continued.
He removed four cards from his Graveyard at once.
"I Special Summon the Equip-Magic Cards 'Unity Power', 'Devil Axe', 'Jeweled Sword' (Original Card), and 'Magician Power' from my Graveyard as monsters!"
