Chapter 170: Kyle, Why Aren't You Here Yet?
Chapter 170: Kyle, Why Aren't You Here Yet?
As Kyle returned from the greenhouse and made his way back to the dormitory, he was stopped in his tracks by the inseparable duo, Harry and Ron.
"Thanks for the book, Kyle," Harry said, returning the copy of 'Quidditch Through the Ages' to Kyle with a hint of excitement in his voice. "You were right, it really helped me a lot. I've been practicing the techniques, and Wood said my improvement has been incredible. He said I'm almost as good as Charlie now!"
"You finished it so quickly?" Kyle took the book with a smile. "No wonder Professor McGonagall has high hopes for you, Harry. You truly have a gift."
"Oh no, I just skimmed through it," Harry scratched his head, a bit embarrassed. "I guess it's because I knew nothing about Quidditch before, so any improvement seems like a huge change."
"Don't be modest, Harry," Kyle shook his head. "It took me over a month to master all the techniques in that book, but you've achieved the same in half the time."
"R-really?" Harry's face turned stiff, and he forced a dry laugh, turning his head away to avoid Kyle's gaze, feeling a bit guilty.
Kyle raised an eyebrow, as if he had guessed something was amiss.
"Do you need to borrow any other books?" Kyle asked. "I also have 'The Wonder of Quidditch' and 'Rapid Scoring Techniques'. If you want, I can bring them to the Great Hall later."
"No, that's okay!" Harry blurted out. "I mean, I'm really busy with homework and training... I barely have time to read these days."
"Just let me know whenever you feel like reading them," Kyle nodded.
He had a pretty good idea of what was going on.
If he wasn't mistaken, this savior of the wizarding world hadn't even finished 'Quidditch Through the Ages'. He probably managed to get through half of it at most.
But that was to be expected.
The image of Harry Potter quietly sitting down to read a book... now that was a scary thought.
For some reason, seeing the thoughtful look on Kyle's face made Harry feel even more guilty.
...
In reality, Kyle didn't understand Harry at all. He hadn't even finished half of the book.
When Harry first started reading it, he was indeed very interested. The first day, he stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, eventually falling asleep at his desk.
But that enthusiasm only lasted a day.
Once the initial excitement wore off, the lengthy paragraphs and awkward terminology started to test his patience. Coincidentally, it was around this time that Wood praised him for his remarkable improvement, saying he was almost on par with Charlie.
Harry probably felt that he had learned enough, as he only managed to get through a third of the book before giving up entirely.
After chatting with them for a while longer, Kyle took his leave.
At that moment, Ron spoke up, "I wish Hermione could be more like Kyle."
"What do you mean?" Harry asked, not quite understanding his friend's comment.
"Haven't you noticed? Hermione always talks to everyone as if she's lecturing them. She's driving everyone crazy. Honestly, she's like a nightmare," Ron said. "Kyle is even better than her, and he's the top student in our year. He's also the youngest recipient of the Special Award for Outstanding Services to the School.
But whether it was helping us find our way before the term started or lending you Quidditch books, he's always patient and never acts superior.
Harry stammered for a moment before whispering, "That day we were being chased by Filch, she helped us by opening the door at the end of the corridor, or we would've been caught."
"Yeah, and led us straight to the three-headed dog for a snack..."
Ron shuddered involuntarily, still feeling rattled. "Compared to that, I'd rather face Filch any day."
At this, even Harry fell silent.
On this point, he and Ron were in agreement.
While Filch was certainly scary, he wouldn't eat them up like a snack.
"The Halloween Feast is about to start, let's hurry to the Great Hall."
Changing the subject, Harry asked, "They say it's as grand as the Start-of-Term Feast, is that true?"
"Even better," Ron said, quickly forgetting about Hermione as he spoke excitedly. "I heard from George that last year, Dumbledore invited the Headless Hunt to perform. I wonder who he'll invite this year. It'd be great if it was the Weird Sisters, they're the most popular band."
Hearing this from Ron, Harry also became eager.
He hadn't heard of the "Weird Sisters" before, but he knew what a band was.
Back when he lived with the Dursleys on Privet Drive, he had never heard a band perform, nor had he watched any such programs on television.
After all, Dudley didn't like it.
The two of them quickly made their way downstairs and toward the Great Hall to join the feast.
Meanwhile, Kyle made his way through the wooden barrel in the kitchen corridor and entered the Hufflepuff common room.
There weren't many people in the common room, just a handful, and as Kyle entered, they were preparing to head to the Great Hall for the feast.
Someone recognized him and asked with a smile, "Kyle? Are you heading to the Great Hall, too?"
"I'd love to, but I need to head back to the dormitory to get something first," Kyle replied. "You guys go ahead, I'll be there shortly."
"Alright, but make sure you hurry up," said an older student. "The Halloween Feast is about to begin."
"Don't worry, I've been looking forward to those treats since early morning," Kyle assured them.
However, he had no intention of going to the Great Hall for the Halloween Feast.
He had more important matters to attend to today.
Once everyone had left the common room, Kyle sat down on a sofa and took out a large piece of parchment—the living map he had borrowed from Fred and George before his Herbology class.
"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good."
As Kyle uttered the password, ink lines began to appear on the map.
It was clear to see that almost everyone in the castle was gathered in the Great Hall or on their way there, with only a handful of people elsewhere.
Kyle searched for a while but couldn't find Quirrell's name on the map.
A few minutes later, the feast began, and apart from himself, the only ones who hadn't gone to the Great Hall were Hermione, who was still on the first floor, and Filch, who was on the eighth floor.
"He still hasn't come?" Kyle frowned, slightly surprised.
Could it be that Quirrell wasn't planning to carry out his scheme after all...?
No, that couldn't be.
Kyle quickly dismissed that thought. The feast had just begun, so it probably wasn't time yet. He'd wait a little longer.
