Chapter 17: You Agree, Right, Malfoy?
“Who can tell me what exactly happened here!” Madam Hooch scanned the group of young Wizards, then focused her attention on Malfoy and Harry.
Harry and Malfoy both turned pale with fear, while Ivan quickly interjected.
“Madam Hooch, as you can see, they were just practicing their flying technique.”
A conflicted look flashed across Malfoy's face. He opened his mouth to reveal that Ivan had attacked him with a Petrification Spell, but ultimately closed it without saying a word. Malfoy knew that if he said anything, Ivan would definitely expose his attempt to snatch Neville's crystal ball and his provocation. Malfoy was well aware which punishment would be worse.
To avoid being sent to detention and whipped by Filch, Malfoy reluctantly accepted the notion that he and Harry were "friendly" practicing their flying.
However, Malfoy was not about to let the annoying Ivan off the hook. He immediately spoke up.
“Yes, but it wasn't just the two of us flying.”
As he spoke, Malfoy raised an eyebrow at Ivan, his threatening expression clear. Madam Hooch also shifted her attention from Malfoy and Harry to Ivan.
“Alright, I admit it,” Ivan shrugged indifferently, inwardly mocking Malfoy's childish behavior of dragging others down with him.
Ivan and Malfoy exchanged a glare, but their eyes met and they subtly reached an agreement to keep the peace and not expose each other's misdeeds.
Malfoy was scared by the punishment Ivan threatened, while Ivan was worried about being selected to patrol the Forbidden Forest. With Ivan's current physique, he was not prepared to take that risk.
Harry, who had been listening in, looked utterly confused. Wasn't the situation that Malfoy had taken Neville's crystal ball, and he had taken it back?
When did it turn into a friendly flying practice with Ivan and Malfoy?
However, given Ivan's frequent hints, Harry wisely chose to remain silent.
“I believe I made it clear before I left that no one should ride their broomsticks until I returned!” Madam Hooch was visibly angry to learn that three students had been flying without permission. Neville had just been sent to the hospital, and what if another accident happened?
“I am very sorry, Professor!” Ivan apologized politely, then quickly added.
“But I don’t think any young Wizard can resist the temptation of flying freely on a broomstick. Who wouldn’t want to become a proud Quidditch player and bring glory to the country after graduation?”
“As for what happened with Malfoy and Neville, it was just an accident. Fortunately, our Levitation Charm worked well, and no one was hurt.”
Ivan spoke enthusiastically about his love for Quidditch, almost declaring that he would become a Quidditch champion!
Madam Hooch's expression softened. As the instructor of the Flying Lesson, she too was a lover of flying and Quidditch, and she understood that desire.
“Even so, you must pay the price for breaking the rules,” Madam Hooch said, though she was no longer as angry. She was considering how to punish these troublemakers when Professor Mcgonagall arrived just in time.
“Madam Hooch, could you pause for a moment? I need to borrow Mr. Potter.”
“Of course,” Madam Hooch was initially surprised but quickly nodded.
Madam Hooch had not seen Harry flying, and assumed he had committed some other offense that had drawn Professor Mcgonagall's attention. She briefly explained that Harry had been riding a broomstick without permission during the Flying Lesson.
Professor Mcgonagall nodded and gestured for Harry to follow her.
Harry's mind was a blur, still unsure of what was happening, but he obediently followed Professor Mcgonagall, feeling anxious and fearful.
After watching the two leave, Madam Hooch turned back to the remaining students. “Ivan, Malfoy, your actions will cost your respective houses five points. Now, continue the lesson!”
Ivan's face turned sour. He didn't mind losing points; he had earned over ten points for his house just by answering questions in class. Losing five points wouldn't make anyone blame him.
However, continuing the Flying Lesson was a different matter. Ivan quietly hoped the class would end soon, or he might be exposed.
Ivan pretended to hold his broomstick and made flying gestures while trying to be as inconspicuous as possible.
Unfortunately, due to the numerous incidents during the previous Flying Lesson, Madam Hooch was too cautious to let the young Wizards fly freely again. She decided to have them take turns, and Ivan, who had been set up by Malfoy, was unfortunately first.
Ivan sighed as he looked at his broomstick, regretting not admitting that his flying skills were terrible from the start.
Now, he couldn't claim he couldn't fly even if he wanted to.
Ivan reluctantly tried, and the broomstick gave him a bit of face, wobbling as it took off.
Despite the wobbling, Ivan was thrilled during his first flight. He sped up slightly, feeling the cold wind whistle past his ears and the rooftops rush by. The sense of freedom was far more enjoyable than flying in an airplane.
After a while, Ivan landed smoothly.
Madam Hooch pursed her lips, clearly unsatisfied. She had high hopes for Ivan based on his previous performance, but now he was wobbling in the air.
Ivan cleared his throat to cover his embarrassment. “Cough, Professor, I think this broomstick might be too old and unstable. I flew much better before.”
Malfoy snickered, not expecting Ivan's flying skills to be so poor. No wonder he had stayed on the ground and hadn't flown up with Harry.
But Ivan suddenly said, “You agree, right, Malfoy? Otherwise, why did you suddenly fall off your broomstick?”
Malfoy stopped laughing and glared at Ivan, taking a long time to force out a reply.
“Of course, I also think these broomsticks might be faulty.”
What else could he say? Admit that his own skills were terrible and that was why he fell?
Malfoy felt equally desperate. To avoid punishment, he couldn't tell the truth. How could he admit that he fell because his skills were so poor?
