Chapter 17: Might Guy Clears His Name
Chapter 17: Might Guy Clears His Name
At noon, in the staff room, the teachers discussed their experiences as exam proctors.
"That Hinata Hiromoto from Class 4-1 is incredible," Chiya Isamu said admiringly. "As expected of a ninja from the Hyuga clan. No one in Class 1 could last a minute against him."
"I guess he'll be the practical exam winner for the grade level again this time," someone added.
Chiya wished he were the homeroom teacher of Class 4-1 instead of Class 4-2. Then, he would easily earn bonuses and take his blind dates to high-end restaurants.
But that was impossible. With such excellent students, there was no way the teacher would be replaced.
"That's not necessarily true," Kimura Sando interjected. "I think Uchicha Madara from your class is pretty good too. He might give Hinata a run for his money."
Chiya furrowed his brows, looking puzzled. "Did you get the name wrong, Sando? Are you talking about Uchiha Tetsu? Yes, he's indeed very skilled."
"I'm not that old to have dementia," Kimura said, slightly offended. "I'm talking about Uchiha Madara."
"Uchiha Madara? No way," Chiya scoffed, eyeing Kimura doubtfully. "What kind of skill could he possibly have?" Everyone knew that Uchiha Madara was the infamous underachiever of the Uchiha clan. If he had any real talent, he wouldn't have earned such a nickname.
"I'm not lying to you," Kimura insisted. "Madara's first opponent was Tetsu, and he won decisively."
Seeing Chiya's continued skepticism, Kimura turned to Mu Yue. "Teacher Mu and I proctored the same exam. Ask her if you don't believe me."
Chiya turned to Mu Yue, who nodded in confirmation. "Yes, Kimura-sensei is right. Uchiha Madara defeated Uchiha Tetsu in the first round."
"Wow, that's bizarre," Chiya said, scratching his head in bewilderment.
He trusted Mu Yue's words implicitly. After all, she was Teacher Mu, who had gained the recognition of all the teachers within just a month of joining the academy. She was the epitome of reliability.
"How did he manage to beat Tetsu?" Chiya wondered, scratching his head in confusion. "What happened to the infamous underachiever?"
Perhaps a mysterious teacher had secretly taught him advanced ninjutsu.
Watching Chiya's reaction, Mu Yue thought to herself, "He's this shocked just because Madara showed some skill. I wonder how he'll react when Might Guy displays his true power. He might suspect he's under a genjutsu."
Chiya had hit the jackpot this time, and Mu Yue guessed that he would be keeping his bonus. She acknowledged that it wasn't purely luck on his part, though. He often asked her to substitute for him, which helped her gain more students and, in turn, more rewards. He had also taken her out for meals numerous times, so he had some insight and strategy.
"The students in Teacher Hayabu's class are amazing," Ueda Aya, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up. She had proctored the exams for Mu Yue's Class 1-1. "Their overall Three-Step Jutsu Technique is almost on par with the second-graders I teach."
"Especially that super genius, Uchiha Tomozou," she continued. "He reminds me of Hatake Kakashi from a few years ago. He's definitely going to be the first-year winner in practical exams this time."
"Comparable to Kakashi? That's a bold statement," Chiya exclaimed, his face full of surprise.
While being the grade-level winner was impressive, being compared to Kakashi was on another level. Kakashi Hatake was the undisputed genius of the Ninja Academy in recent years, and his post-graduation achievements further solidified his reputation. He had become a Chunin, a middle-rank ninja, just a year after graduating.
"What luck? It's because of your excellent teaching, Hayabu-sensei. With that level of skill, you can't attribute it all to natural talent," Ueda corrected.
She didn't believe that Class 1-1's prowess was due to an abundance of geniuses but rather to Mu Yue's exceptional teaching abilities.
Otherwise, why would the students from the classes she substituted for hope that she'd come more often?
It wasn't just one or two classes; all the classes she taught temporarily gave her rave reviews.
"My mistake, my mistake. Of course, I know you're a great teacher, Hayabu-sensei. My students would love it if I were busy all the time and you came to teach them instead," Chiya said, feeling a bit glum.
He only occasionally asked Mu Yue to substitute for him, teaching most of the classes himself, yet his students still preferred her.
"It's fine. The students are just exceptionally diligent," Mu Yue humbly replied.
After chatting with her colleagues for a while, Mu Yue began practicing her calligraphy until the afternoon exam commenced.
Once again, they were at Training Ground 16, though there were significantly fewer people than in the morning.
Since the exam didn't force students who had already lost to continue participating, they could choose whether to stay or leave.
As time passed, the battles unfolded one by one. The not-so-combatively-inclined Nohara Rin was eliminated in the first round of the afternoon session.
However, Might Guy, who could cleanly and decisively defeat any opponent he faced, finally caught everyone's attention.
"So, Might Guy is this strong at taijutsu? His speed is incredible! He took down Daijiro with just one kick!" The spectating students exclaimed in astonishment.
"That's a huge improvement. I remember he was just average in our third year; he wasn't this strong," said a student who knew Might Guy, perplexed.
"Maybe he trained extra hard during the summer break and the new semester?" That was the only explanation he could think of.
"Final match! Number one, Uchiha Obito, versus number forty, Might Guy! Please get ready to begin the battle," Mu Yue announced the last match of the class practical exam.
Hearing their names, Might Guy and Obito glanced at each other and swiftly made their way to the exam venue, preparing to fight.
"Guy, I won't let you have this first place," Obito said, his gaze flicking to Rin, who was standing outside. He really didn't want to lose in front of her.
"Me neither. Since I aim to be the strongest, I'll seize every first place I can get!" Might Guy replied, his spirit soaring.
"They really saved the best for last," a student who had previously criticized the pair felt a sting on his face.
The students found it unbelievable. In their third year, the two had been the biggest laggards, and now, in their fourth year, they had suddenly become so formidable.
Who would have dared to think this way before the exam began? Everyone had assumed that Uchiha Tekka would be the top fighter in the class.
They couldn't fathom what these two must have done during the holidays and the new semester to improve so dramatically.
After exchanging these heated words, Might Guy and Obito fell silent, standing opposite each other and forming the Tiger seal.
"Begin!"
