Chapter 17: Don't You Know?
Chapter 17: Don't You Know?
The two of them stood in silence for a while.
Qiao Sang remained quiet, standing by the side.
Spiky gave Jiang Liu a meaningful look.
Jiang Liu asked curiously, "What's wrong with your eyes?"
Spiky: "..."
You're so naive.
Spiky resisted the urge to facepalm and managed to say just one word: "Money."
Jiang Liu finally caught on and hurriedly pulled out 50 Union Coins from his pocket, handing them over.
Spiky: "..."
You really deserve to be single! Couldn't you have added a contact and transferred the money?
"Thanks, I'll be going now." Qiao Sang took the money and smiled.
There was only a short window of time during the peak after-school hours, and she needed to take advantage of it to find more targets.
"Wait, fight me once too." Spiky stopped Qiao Sang. "I don't want money; just tell me the secret to raising Fangflare."
Qiao Sang shook her head. "I don't have any secrets."
"Impossible. If there were no secrets, why would Fangflare be so obedient?" Spiky looked unconvinced.
Raising a familiar wasn't a secret; there were even specialized courses for it in college.
Graduates from these courses were called trainers, like Beastmasters, and they had to pass exams to be ranked from F-Class to Sss-Class.
Some people who bonded with familiars would seek out trainers to create detailed training plans.
However, others had their own unique methods and were unwilling to share them.
For example, the Wei Family in Jiang City had a special food that Fairy-Type Extraordinary Beasts loved, which made these elusive creatures appear willingly to bond with them.
This food was highly coveted. If the recipe were to be patented or sold, it would bring in a fortune.
But the Wei Family only used it within their family.
Over 300 years, almost every member of the Wei Family had a Fairy-Type familiar, earning them the title of the Fairy Family.
Spiky believed that Qiao Sang was just unwilling to tell him.
He still remembered the incident with the only other student in the school who had a Fire-Type familiar. A senior from the second year had brought out his Firemouse to let a junior touch it, but the Firemouse had immediately spewed a flame at him.
The senior was fine, but his hair was singed, and he had to shave his head. He still wore a hat every day.
Fangflare, on the other hand, remained obedient in similar situations.
Qiao Sang replied, puzzled, "I'm its Beastmaster; it listening to me is normal, isn't it?"
"Tooth."
Fangflare nodded, agreeing with its Beastmaster.
Spiky, seeing Fangflare's behavior, was unsure now. Could it be that Fangflare was naturally well-behaved?
"Can I pet it?" Spiky asked.
"Chen Tongtong, don't be impulsive", Jiang Liu cautioned.
The reason the senior had become bald was known throughout the school, and he was worried Chen Tongtong would become the second bald student.
"It's fine, go ahead and pet it", Qiao Sang said indifferently.
Back at the Pet Beast Facility, Fangflare had been willing to let her pet it even before they had bonded.
Chen Tongtong was tempted. He squatted down and looked at Fangflare, reaching out his hand.
"Tooth."
Fangflare showed him its sharp teeth in a friendly manner.
Chen Tongtong quickly pulled back his hand, afraid that Fangflare might bite him.
"Let's just fight. I don't need any secrets; just tell me how you usually raise Fangflare", Chen Tongtong said as he stood up.
"Alright." Qiao Sang agreed.
Although Fangflare had only been with her for about three or four days, she had some experience in raising it.
Seeing that they had come to a decision, Jiang Liu stepped forward. "I'll be the referee this time."
Qiao Sang nodded.
Chen Tongtong summoned his familiar.
Qiao Sang looked at the supernatural creature in front of her and fell silent.
A brown, insect-type familiar about 10 centimeters long, resembling a foxtail, wriggled on the ground.
It turned out to be a Cotton Worm...
Cotton Worms are usually green, and brown Cotton Worms are quite rare. This cheap and common familiar is generally not favored by Beastmasters with any ambition. However, it has a diverse range of evolutionary forms, with five different attribute variations currently known. Among them, its evolved form, Bashutter, is a rare ice-attribute familiar, which significantly boosts the value of the Cotton Worm.
But all this value hinges on its evolutionary form.
Qiao Sang had read in books that Cotton Worms can only learn the skills of silk-spitting and ramming.
Isn't this just giving her money?
"This time, you go first", Qiao Sang said.
She was afraid that Fangflare would finish the battle with just one Spark...
Chen Tongtong naturally knew what Qiao Sang was thinking. Every time he brought out his Cotton Worm, the opponent would let him attack first.
This underestimation and the feeling of being overlooked always gave him an advantage in battles.
A normal Cotton Worm can evolve between 3 to 5 months, but his Cotton Worm had been delayed for nearly a year to build a solid foundation for a perfect evolution.
With this strong foundation, his Cotton Worm was far from being a typical Cotton Worm!
He even achieved a commendable 39th place in the Freshman Familiar Battle thanks to the exceptional toughness of his Cotton Worm's silk.
"Cotton Worm! Show her your strength!" Chen Tongtong raised his hand and shouted forcefully.
"Jie!"
The Cotton Worm opened its mouth, and a bright white silk line shot toward Fangflare at incredible speed.
It was so fast that Fangflare hadn't even taken a step before being bound by the silk.
Fangflare struggled but couldn't break free.
Qiao Sang frowned. It seemed Fangflare's speed training needed to be prioritized.
"Give it the final blow!" Chen Tongtong continued to shout.
The Cotton Worm's body glowed with a faint white light, and its 10-centimeter body shot through the air, much faster than Fangflare's previous ramming.
Qiao Sang gauged the distance and, after three seconds, issued the command: "Flame Fang."
A brilliant flame instantly destroyed the white silk, accurately biting into the charging Cotton Worm.
"Jie!!!" The Cotton Worm let out a shrill cry.
Two seconds later, its eyes rolled back, and it fainted.
"Qiao Sang wins", Jiang Liu announced.
"Cotton Worm!" Chen Tongtong ran over and scooped up the fallen Cotton Worm.
After confirming that Cotton Worm was just unconscious, he returned it to the Beastmaster Codex.
"Why?" Chen Tongtong looked up at Qiao Sang with red eyes.
"What?" Qiao Sang countered.
She didn't understand. Wasn't it normal for Fangflare to win against Cotton Worm? Why was he reacting so strongly?
"Why did you break Cotton Worm's silk so easily?" Chen Tongtong stared at Qiao Sang, unwilling to accept it.
His Cotton Worm's silk was incredibly tough; once it bound an opponent, they couldn't break free, even with great strength.
It shouldn't have been so easy, like a joke.
"Um", Qiao Sang thought for a moment, "You don't know that fire-type familiars are strong against insect-types?"
Chen Tongtong: "..."
"Maybe you haven't fought a fire-type familiar before?" Qiao Sang felt she had hit the nail on the head.
Chen Tongtong: "...!!"
