Chapter 17: Battle in the Plants vs. Zombies World - Part 2
Chapter 17: Battle in the Plants vs. Zombies World - Part 2
As soon as they returned to the surface, a gust of wind blew in from outside. A piece of paper flew through the open window and stuck directly to Liam's face. He smelled a strong scent of blood on it.
He removed the paper and saw a line of crooked letters written in dark red blood: "We'll be visiting soon. Welcome to join us! —Your friends."
It seemed the battle was about to begin. The digital clock in the living room turned red and emitted a shrill alarm. A two-minute countdown appeared immediately.
"You go to the empty house next door. You won't face the main force of Zombies there; just help me from the side and take out any stragglers. I've prepared everything for you over there", Dave said. As soon as he finished speaking, he rushed out the front door.
Before the door could close, Dave ran back and placed a brand new iron pot on Liam's head. "With this, you can command the Plants with your mind."
After the door closed, Liam left through the back door, taking a path through his house to reach the designated position.
In his previous life, Liam was an old player of the Plants vs. Zombies game series. Now, the idea of personally commanding a real-life Plants vs. Zombies battle made him both nervous and excited.
At the designated position, the house contained four bags of seeds. The labels on the bags read: Sunflower (50), Peashooter (100), Cherry Bomb (150), and Wall-nut (50).
According to the instructions nearby, in battle mode, Sunflowers generate a Sunlight every 30 seconds. This Sunlight can empower Plants to become temporary weapons with a three-day lifespan. The iron pot on Liam's head could collect Sunlight, and the operations were similar to the game. The pot was pre-filled with 50 points of Sunlight.
Liam quickly planted a Sunflower seed in the yard and placed the Sunlight on it.
Like a fast-forward in a documentary, the seed rapidly grew from a sprout into a mature Sunflower within seconds. Soon, the Sunflower produced a light orb, which, under Liam's mental guidance, flew into the iron pot. A virtual number appeared in the top-left corner of his vision: 25. It seemed that, like in the game, a Sunflower produced 25 points of Sunlight at a time.
Just as he finished this, he heard Zombies climbing up the wooden boards on the wall. Soon, the first Zombie's head appeared over the wall.
The Zombie let out a terrifying howl and shuffled toward the house where Liam was. From a distance, the Zombies didn't have the same silly charm as in the game, but they looked similar: greenish skin, tattered clothes, bulging eyes, and a mouth filled with a few yellowed teeth. They moved with a wobbly gait, occasionally emitting incomprehensible growls.
Only one or two Zombies initially entered the yard. Liam used the 50 points of Sunlight to plant another Sunflower. He then continuously cast the Stone Curse on the one or two Zombies climbing over the wall. Although the effect was not great, each spell made the Zombies pause for about five to six seconds.
With the help of two Sunflowers, Liam quickly planted his first Peashooter. After a few peas hit, a Zombie's neck snapped, and it fell to the ground in the yard.
After taking down a few more Zombies with a combination of magic and the Peashooter, Liam suddenly noticed a virtual silver coin emerging from the body of a fallen Zombie. When he used his mind to collect it into his pot, he felt a sudden weight in his pocket. Liam reached in and pulled out a Sunlight Crystal.
"This world is quite interesting", Liam thought. "The appearance of Sunlight Crystals in Zombies' bodies is neither scientific nor magical."
As time passed, the Sunlight Crystals accumulated more and more. Liam planted two rows of Sunflowers at the back of the yard, then placed three Peashooters in each row. At the very front, he planted a row of Wall-nuts.
With this formation, the Zombies became easy targets, falling one by one in front of the Plants. Liam took this opportunity to practice the few spells he had mastered.
Occasionally, when a group of Zombies gathered, he would plant a Cherry Bomb to clear the area.
After a few hours, as Liam grew more adept at casting his spells, an alarm suddenly sounded from Crazy Dave's house. It seemed the final assault by the Zombies was about to begin.
Hundreds of Zombies, led by a few Flag Zombies, charged over. The delaying effects of the spells were negligible against such a large group.
Soon, the Zombies trampled over the bodies of their fallen comrades, pushing through the Peashooters' fire to reach the Wall-nuts and start gnawing at them.
Liam tried to plant a Cherry Bomb in the midst of the Zombie cluster, but there were too many. Before it could explode, they had already gnawed it away.
With no other choice, Liam placed Cherry Bombs at the edges of the Zombie horde, peeling away layer after layer like an onion.
Finally, just as a few Wall-nuts were about to be devoured, Liam managed to eliminate all the Zombies that had invaded the yard.
He wanted to chase after the retreating Zombies, but remembering Dave's instructions, he stayed put.
After the main group of Zombies had left, a few more suddenly emerged from the ground, clearly intending to ambush him.
Cold sweat trickled down Liam's spine. After hours of battle, he was exhausted and plopped down on the steps in front of the door, breathing heavily.
After a while, Liam saw Dave driving a tractor out of his house.
He ran over and saw Dave planting permanent Plants along the roadside. Noticing Liam, Dave called out, "Come help me. Once we plant these Plants here, Zombies won't be able to approach this area in large numbers again. We'll reclaim a piece of land from the Zombies, and I'll build you a house here."
Liam was initially indifferent, but the mention of a house, considering his past experience with housing prices, made him immediately step forward to help, using the Levitation Charm to assist with moving items.
Seeing Dave's rough hands patching the fence, Liam felt puzzled. In the underground Laboratory, there was a highly advanced smart butler that Dave boasted about creating himself. So why not use robots to help with these chores?
During a break, Liam asked this question. Dave took a sip of water and replied, "Do you think I want to do this myself? Unfortunately, Plants can only perform simple actions and can't move around to help me. My enemy, the leader of the Zombies, is an expert in robotics. I'm outmatched in computers and robotics. Only in the completely shielded underground Laboratory can I ensure the System's safety. Once I leave that shielded space, my robots would quickly be turned against me by him."
Liam sighed, realizing they would have to work into the night. This kind of physical labor was quite heavy for an 11-year-old.
Suddenly, an idea struck Liam. "Uncle Dave, we won't have to do this kind of rough work anymore. I just thought of a good way to solve the problem of our robots being used against us."
