Chapter 1699: A War Without Victors (One Hundred and Forty-Nine)
Chapter 1699: A War Without Victors (One Hundred and Forty-Nine)
"How's training going over there?"
Seeing Angelina, who had just rushed into the resting tent, Ginny, still with her large baby bump, smiled and greeted her. She was actually quite envious of Angelina's pursuit of her dreams and even joining her favorite Holyhead Harpies team.
"It's going well, but quite a few things have happened recently."
Angelina sat down at the small round table, picking up the teapot and pouring herself a still-warm cup of milk tea.
"What happened?"
Ginny was indeed curious.
To be honest, it was quite boring to just sit here reading parenting books. Occasionally listening to some gossip was not a bad idea, and she especially loved hearing about Albert's gossip.
"Do you remember Wilder Griffiths?"
Angelina picked up a steamed bun from the steamer, took a big bite, and said with a mouthful, "The one from the Holyhead Harpies who was planning to retire and get married?"
Ginny had always been a loyal supporter of the Holyhead Harpies, so she naturally knew all the Quidditch players.
"Yes, her plans have been completely exposed."
After swallowing her mouthful of food, Angelina began to tell the juiciest news in the Quidditch circle lately.
"That guy never intended to get married. She's planning to join the Puddlemere United team instead."
Talking about this matter, Angelina's expression became especially complex, as she was the direct beneficiary of this situation.
"How is that possible... I thought they..."
Ginny was equally shocked upon hearing this news.
"Not sure exactly what happened, but Gwenog Jones was so angry when she found out that she rushed to see Wilder Griffiths, but it seemed the conversation didn't go well." Angelina smiled bitterly, "In the end, Gwenog Jones vowed to make Wilder Griffiths pay for this."
"What were they talking about?"
The tent flap was lifted, and Fred walked in quickly, still wearing his work clothes.
Ever since Angelina officially joined the Holyhead Harpies, Fred had been spending more time each day building the village of Avalon. He could only prepare his own snacks at his villa.
"Wilder Griffiths from the Holyhead Harpies seems to be planning to transfer to Puddlemere United," Angelina told Fred about the big news of the day during training.
"The one who was going to retire and get married?"
Fred was a bit astonished, but he soon remembered why he had come to find Angelina. After greeting Ginny, he invited Angelina to visit Cedric's new home, intending to use this opportunity to convince Angelina to move in with him.
The cozy and comfortable living room created a stark contrast with the rough and simple exterior of the house, and even Angelina couldn't help but exclaim, "It feels like two different worlds on either side of the door!"
"This was actually Albert's idea."
A smile of happiness spread across Qiu Zhang's face as she explained to the couple about the situation of settling down here.
Fred and Angelina listened intently, as no girl could resist the desire for a happy home of their own.
Angelina was no exception, and she eagerly asked Qiu Zhang many more questions.
Even though the village of Avalon was still under construction, many villagers had already moved in.
This was the case for many, and it was an idea that Albert had proposed for those who wanted to settle in Avalon early. It had to be admitted that this method was far more comfortable than living in tents.
Furthermore, during the rainy season, one had to keep themselves busy to prevent mold from setting in—both literally and metaphorically.
In fact, in the eyes of some wizards, these unfinished villas were ready for occupancy as long as the doors and windows were installed.
If not for the fact that the village's facilities were not yet fully constructed, most of the residents would have already moved in. But that was fine; they could slowly add their own touches, just as they were doing now.
"We'll definitely be able to move in before Christmas," Fred assured, his voice full of confidence.
Angelina neither agreed nor disagreed. Instead, she turned to Qiu Zhang and asked, "I heard from Ginny that everyone plans to celebrate Christmas here this year."
"Yes, ever since Albert mentioned that he'll be traveling the world starting next summer, everyone decided to hold this year's Christmas party in Avalon," Qiu Zhang said, then added, "I remember Albert came by today, too!"
"Hmm, he was checking the insulation of the villa's walls. While winters here aren't as harsh as those at Hogwarts, it still snows, so proper insulation is important," Fred said, then continued as if remembering something, "I heard he's planning to invent something called a 'magic heater' in his spare time. He thinks it will be a hit."
"Invent in his spare time?" Angelina couldn't help but mutter softly, a mix of emotions in her voice, "Only Albert would come up with something like that!"
Even with the occasional snowfall, winters here were not too cold, and with the insulation and fireplaces, one could stay quite comfortable.
But Albert was still experimenting with—no, it would be more accurate to say he was refining—magic heaters.
If he could lower the production cost and mass-produce them, they would undoubtedly be a hot commodity.
To be honest, Albert had always been puzzled by the British wizarding world. They had some rather advanced inventions, like vacuum cleaners.
Yes, vacuum cleaners. While they weren't widespread, they did exist.
But there were also many outdated aspects, like the fact that wizards still used kerosene lamps.
It wasn't that no one had tried to improve things; there seemed to be a breakdown in the transmission of knowledge.
After confirming that the villa's insulation was effective, Albert and Sana took a stroll around Avalon, taking in the latest changes to the village.
"When did you guys dig this well?"
Albert eyed the well before him, marveling at its width—large enough for a person to stand inside. What surprised him the most, however, was the huge cement ring that had been placed at the top. This meant that the essential parts of the well were already in place. All that remained was to pump out the murky water, let it refill with clear water, and then cap it with a steel-reinforced concrete lid, leaving just a small opening for drawing water.
"Some things can't be rushed. It's better to take it slow," said one of the villagers, recalling how they had set up a canvas canopy during the rainy season to dig the well, wanting to solve the water problem first.
"Who do you think is to blame for all this?" Sana looked at Albert with a slight hint of resentment.
"I never pressured anyone."
"They know you plan to start your world travels next summer, so they want to finish Avalon before then."
"Well, I guess it is my fault, then."
Albert hadn't expected this, but he wanted to point out that, going by the current construction pace, Avalon would surely be completed long before he left Britain to explore the world.
