Chapter 1691: A War with No Victors (One Hundred and Forty-One)
Chapter 1691: A War with No Victors (One Hundred and Forty-One)
It was for this reason that the relationship between wizards and fairies gradually deteriorated. However, unless there was a third fairy rebellion, not many wizards would pay attention to it. And in this late twentieth century, such a possibility was highly unlikely. Even if a fairy rebellion were to occur, it wouldn't amount to much.
Were all British wizards dead? Having just gone through the Second Wizarding War and the subsequent crackdown on Inferi and werewolves, the Ministry of Magic was now robust and unafraid of a fairy rebellion. In fact, they almost welcomed it.
It would give Kingsley a suitable excuse to take action against the fairies. And there would be no pesky obstacles preventing him from utilizing the remnants of Voldemort's vile legacy to support the Ministry's subsequent reforms.
Albert glanced casually at the message Percy had sent him, then tossed it onto the table. Even if the two sides did come to blows, it wouldn't be until next year, and it had nothing to do with him and his plans to travel the world with his family.
He had done all that he could.
Currently, Albert was seated among the faculty, attending the Hogwarts Halloween feast with the entire school.
To be honest, this seemingly lively Halloween feast was rather boring. Albert had never been a fan of the Weird Sisters and didn't care for their manic tunes.
If he had a choice, he would much rather be at home, spending time with his wife and daughter, enjoying a meal prepared by the house-elves instead of this unique Halloween feast.
He didn't know whose bright idea it was, but perhaps it was due to the abundance of pumpkins in Hagrid's garden this year. In any case, most of the food on the long tables seemed to be pumpkin-based.
It wasn't that the dishes made with pumpkin were unappetizing, but when most of the food on the menu was pumpkin-centric, it did make one's feelings rather complicated.
On Albert's right was a cup of pumpkin juice specially prepared by the house-elves for the Halloween banquet. It was still slightly warm, and the rich, creamy, authentic pumpkin juice was far superior to any store-bought pumpkin soda. It received unanimous praise from the professors.
The main course was a whole roasted pumpkin, hollowed out by the house-elves and filled with tender beef and vegetables.
This dish also received unanimous praise.
However, the pumpkin extravaganza continued with battered and fried pumpkin strips, pumpkin pies, and pumpkin pastries, leaving one feeling a bit overwhelmed by the end of the meal.
Yet, even more, exasperating than the pumpkin feast before him was the play that followed the dinner, titled "The Great Hogwarts Battle."
Hermione had told him that she had written the script herself and that it would surely give him a big surprise.
As a firsthand participant in that battle, Albert found the so-called stage play far from surprising.
However, he had to admit that aside from a few minor changes to make the plot more suitable for the stage, Hermione had faithfully recreated the Great Battle, even directly copying the original dialogue. She was indeed a brilliant playwright.
One could easily see from the students' expressions that they understood what was happening.
The entire story showcased the efforts of Albus, Harry, and Albert to defeat Voldemort once and for all.
Although these events had been recounted by Harry and Albert, as an eyewitness to those events, watching this play made him feel inexplicably awkward and even a bit regretful for attending the Halloween feast.
If Albert had known what Hermione's play was about, he would have brought Harry Potter along to watch it as well, so that he wouldn't be the only one feeling awkward.
Unfortunately, there were no "what ifs."
Surprisingly, Hermione's adapted play was well-received by the entire Hogwarts staff and student body.
Although many had already heard about this final battle that decided the fate of the British magical community, the revelation of the truth that had been buried was still shocking when presented on stage before them.
They never imagined the truth would be like this.
Horcruxes.
The fact that they were ultimately able to destroy the "immortal" Voldemort was truly chilling.
If the three of them hadn't joined forces to destroy him, one could only imagine what terrifying things they would have had to face in the future.
Whether it was Dumbledore sacrificing his life to set a trap for Voldemort, or Harry Potter fearlessly embracing death at the crucial moment to turn Voldemort back into a mortal, paving the way for Albert to face him, and the latter not disappointing their hopes and completely destroying Voldemort, bringing peace to the British wizarding world—all of this left a deep impression.
After the play ended, many people looked at Albert with complex expressions.
He had never taken credit for defeating Voldemort, just as he had handled the bounty for Voldemort's death. He was a man of high moral character, like Dumbledore.
And so, at the end of the Halloween feast, when Albert stood up to lead the singing, the Great Hall erupted in deafening cheers and applause.
He raised his hand to signal for quiet and then, as planned, raised both hands like a conductor, moving them to the music, and began to lead the singing. The student choir joined in with him.
Scattered humming gradually filled the Great Hall.
As people became more focused and invested their emotions into this grand chorus, their voices merged into one, until the song ended and enthusiastic applause rang out once more, bringing the Halloween feast to a close.
"You sang well."
After the feast, Cedric walked alongside Albert in the corridor, casually chatting about the evening's play.
"But I never expected it to be like that!"
Although he had heard some rumors when the students were rehearsing the play, it was still quite a revelation...
"Do you think it's really appropriate to publicly reveal the existence of Horcruxes like that? The Ministry won't be happy about it."
"I'm sure Professor McGonagall has already removed any books related to Horcruxes from the library. Even if someone were to learn how to make them, do you really think they could replicate Voldemort's results?"
Albert understood Cedric's concerns. As an employee of the Ministry, he would need to report any significant events at Hogwarts to Kingsley.
However, they never expected Professor McGonagall to directly reveal the reason for Voldemort's apparent immortality. It would be hard for certain individuals to not develop ulterior motives.
