Chapter 169: It Won't Take Too Long
Chapter 169: It Won't Take Too Long
"Come on up."
Ivan said to Parvati and Lavender, inwardly marveling at how precocious young witches and wizards were these days, thinking about forming couples at just twelve or thirteen.
After the two climbed up and settled in, the carriage, which had been stationary for a while, finally started moving slowly. It seemed they had finally met the departure criteria.
The Thestral-drawn carriage moved at a moderate pace, creaking and swaying, making Ivan feel a bit uncomfortable, but it was still bearable.
Parvati and Lavender, now seated in the carriage, continued to ask questions about Thestrals.
"Do you mean only people who have seen death can see these creatures? How do we know your Thestrals are real?" Parvati asked, puzzled.
Hermione, although she couldn't see the Thestrals, didn't doubt Ivan's explanation. She just thought she hadn't read enough books to come across a description of these creatures.
"Thestrals can't be seen, but you should still be able to touch them", Ivan thought for a moment before speaking.
Lavender, who was incredibly brave, suddenly stood up and leaned out of the carriage, reaching for the reins. Her hand soon touched a long, whip-like object, which might have been a tail.
"Wow, Thestrals really do exist!" Lavender exclaimed.
Hearing this, Parvati also became curious and tried to reach out to touch as well.
Seeing the bold actions of the two young witches, Ivan quickly stopped them.
"Thestrals are very dangerous creatures. Don't touch them randomly. These things can fly, and if you anger them, they might toss the carriage into the air."
Parvati quickly withdrew her hand, but a smile lingered on her lips, clearly indicating she had touched something.
"Are they that dangerous? Do they bite?" Lavender asked.
Ivan nodded without hesitation and added that Thestrals were attracted to raw meat and blood, describing their appearance in a terrifying manner.
Although Ivan knew the Thestrals at the school were domesticated and quite gentle, generally not attacking people, Parvati and Lavender couldn't see them and were just kids. What if they got carried away and touched the wrong place?
Thestrals, despite being gentle, were still classified as dangerous magical creatures by the Ministry of Magic. It was fine to confirm their existence, but it was best not to let their guard down.
After Ivan's warnings, Parvati and Lavender completely gave up the idea of touching the Thestrals again.
However, Ivan didn't notice that Hermione, sitting beside him, also wanted to touch the Thestrals. Upon hearing his words, the young witch quietly withdrew her hand and looked at him with a hint of resentment.
The carriage moved steadily along the path, following the long line of carriages ahead. The four of them chatted, with Ivan mostly listening to the others gossip. Hermione, worried about Harry and Ron's safety, only occasionally chimed in.
About half an hour later, the carriage slowly stopped at the stone steps leading to the Oak Gate.
By the time they reached the castle, it was already night, with no moon in the sky. The stars provided faint light, and they had to follow the street lamps and the crowd to proceed.
"Ivan, what's wrong?" Hermione realized that Ivan hadn't followed her and was still standing by the carriage, reaching out to touch something.
This reminded Hermione of the Thestrals Ivan had mentioned.
Ivan withdrew his hand. He had suddenly thought that Thestrals might be a good magical creature to integrate, wondering what abilities he might gain from their bloodline.
An invisible body that others can't see?
Ivan was lost in thought when he heard Hermione's voice. He turned around with a smile and said,
"Hermione, didn't you want to confirm the existence of Thestrals?"
"But you said earlier that Thestrals are dangerous magical creatures and should not be touched casually?" Hermione was somewhat tempted but hesitated.
"Usually, that's true, but the Thestrals here are well-tamed. As long as you're careful, there's no danger. I was just fooling them earlier", Ivan explained, glancing at Parvati and Lavender in the distance.
The two young Gryffindor witches had clearly noticed that Ivan and Hermione hadn't followed. Parvati was about to turn back to ask what was going on, but Lavender, who understood the situation, dragged her away.
Hermione hesitated for a moment, remembering that Harry and Ron were still in danger.
"It will only take a few seconds, it won't waste much time", Ivan continued, estimating that Harry and Ron were probably still struggling with the Whomping Willow.
After all, the magical car wasn't slow, and it would have arrived at about the same time as the train. When they were on the carriage, it should have already landed.
Even if they went to inform the professors now, it would be too late.
Hermione finally set aside her concerns and ran over quickly, her eyes filled with curiosity and excitement. Recalling the various terrifying descriptions Ivan had given, she tentatively extended her hand.
She was a bit worried about getting bitten.
Ivan smiled and placed his hand on Hermione's, guiding her to touch the left front, which he had touched earlier, likely the position of the Thestral's wing.
Realizing that her hand was being held by Ivan, the young witch's cheeks turned slightly red. She pretended not to notice and surreptitiously glanced around.
Most of the students had already left, and the few remaining were not paying attention to them. Hermione quietly sighed in relief.
Then, the sensation in her palm made Hermione's eyes widen.
Rough, cold
There was clearly nothing visible in front of her, but she felt a thin, leathery layer, with bones inside, quite hard.
Hermione savored this magical sensation.
Suddenly, both of them felt something licking their hands, causing a tingling, ticklish sensation on their palms.
Hermione was initially startled but quickly realized it was the Thestral's tongue, guessing that it was showing them friendliness.
This creature isn't as terrifying as Ivan described earlier, Hermione thought to herself.
"Alright, we've touched it. Let's go", Ivan withdrew his hand and looked around the empty area, speaking.
"Oh, we've already wasted so much time! Harry and Ron are still in the car", Hermione, realizing this, changed her expression and quickly pulled Ivan's arm, running towards the castle.
