Chapter 1688: A War Without Victors (One Hundred and Thirty-Eight)
Chapter 1688: A War Without Victors (One Hundred and Thirty-Eight)
If Albert knew of Fred's decision, he would undoubtedly feel relieved.
Love is meant to be mutual, and one-sided devotion only leads to heartbreak. Hence, the term "lick-spittle dog" aptly describes someone doomed to a bitter end.
However, it seems that this incident spurred Fred to channel more energy into his work, choosing to let his relationship with Angelina develop naturally.
To paraphrase Albert, if two people are truly meant to be together, they will inevitably find their way back to each other.
He, too, felt that this statement made perfect sense!
While Fred's change was subtle, it didn't go unnoticed by the lovestruck girls.
Everyone was surprised to hear about the issues between Fred and Angelina, but since it was their personal matter, no one probed further.
Naturally, Angelina also sensed the shift in Fred's demeanor.
Ever since their heart-to-heart talk that night, Fred had lost his previous enthusiasm. Most of the time, he was preoccupied with his own affairs and no longer made a special effort to spend time with her, making Angelina feel like their relationship had reverted to their previous friendship.
Fred's coldness left Angelina feeling desolate, but she couldn't bring herself to complain. After all, Fred had also mentioned his intention to earn more galleons in the next few years to prepare for their future together.
But whose future was he preparing for?
It seemed more like Fred was getting ready for his future wife, whether it would be Angelina or someone else.
And that was the question—would Angelina be Fred's wife?
It seemed uncertain at this point.
At least, after Fred's change in attitude, Angelina's confidence in their relationship wavered.
Although neither of them explicitly acknowledged it, their fragile relationship was indeed facing challenges, or so it seemed to Angelina.
As for the reason, Angelina knew it all too well.
However, in her opinion, even if they delayed the marriage by three or four years, it wouldn't be too late. By then, they would still be relatively young, and their mental maturity would far surpass what it was now.
Nevertheless, this clearly didn't align with Fred's ultimate expectations. He lacked Angelina's confidence, and he couldn't be sure if their relationship could withstand the test of time without changing for the worse.
Yet, he chose to respect her decision.
What else could he do?
"So, you plan to postpone the wedding until after you retire from the Holyhead Harpies?" Autumn Zhang looked at Angelina in disbelief, finding it hard to accept that she had made such a decision.
Putting aside the long career span of Quidditch players, even if Angelina retired after the four years she mentioned, was she confident that their relationship wouldn't encounter any problems?
"Is there an issue?" Angelina was confused by Autumn Zhang's expression of bewilderment and shock upon hearing her decision.
"Of course, there's an issue!" exclaimed Autumn Zhang. "You two are already engaged, yet you want to push the wedding back by four years? Has Fred gone mad? What's the point of getting engaged if that's the case?" She felt that they were treating the engagement too lightly.
This was a much more serious matter than finding a boyfriend; otherwise, they might end up a laughingstock.
"When do you and Cedric plan to get married?" Angelina quickly changed the subject.
"We set the date for next July," replied Autumn Zhang, her face glowing with happiness. "We still have more than half a year to prepare for the wedding. Even if I accidentally get pregnant by then, it won't be too obvious."
Angelina's face froze as realization suddenly dawned on her. She knew exactly what was missing.
Happiness.
The kind of happiness that comes from being with the one you love! Even though Harry and Ginny were considered a terrible couple by everyone, Angelina could still see the smiles of happiness on their faces. But in her interactions with Fred, she rarely felt that way.
Not long after Angelina walked away in a daze, Fred popped up from somewhere, giving Autumn Zhang a slight nod of gratitude before turning to leave quietly.
"Are you really going to give up?" Autumn Zhang asked.
"I've done all I can. If that's Angelina's choice, I'll quietly support her decision. As for the future, who knows what it holds," Fred replied, now able to face this relationship with calmness.
As for whether their love could withstand the test of time, he was prepared to accept whatever came their way.
In the following days, Angelina started spending more time at the Holyhead Harpies, and she had even discussed the possibility of a tryout with the team.
Just like in the original story where Ginny was able to join the Holyhead Harpies, Angelina's opportunity arose due to the impending retirement of one of the team's Chasers.
When Angelina shared the good news about her tryout with her good friend, Alicia, she naturally received her blessings.
However, Alicia's next words caused Angelina's expression to freeze.
"Then, I suppose you'll have to bring forward your wedding plans. Otherwise, with all the time spent on training and matches, you might not have much time left to plan your wedding."
"I've discussed it with Fred, and we plan to postpone the wedding," Angelina said softly.
"Maybe we can have a joint wedding. That's something Fred and George would come up with," Alicia suggested.
During her time with George, Katie had learned to face their relationship with a calm mindset.
"You two aren't even engaged yet, are you?" Alicia asked, her expression turning strange.
"If all goes well, we'll be engaged next year and married the year after," Katie replied, feeling that marrying George would be just fine. After all, they had known each other since Hogwarts, and their relationship was quite good.
Lately, whenever they had free time, they would go out on dates, and their relationship was progressing swiftly.
As they chatted about their respective relationships, Alicia couldn't help but tease Wood for his "busyness," but it was clear that their relationship was stable. Meanwhile, Angelina remained silent throughout.
Especially when they talked about attending bride training, Angelina seemed to be in a daze.
Usually, young ladies didn't need so-called "bride training."
However, for young couples who planned to marry soon after graduating, such education was necessary.
At the very least, they wouldn't want to mess up their future households due to their lack of knowledge after getting married.
The most interesting part was that the person teaching this class to the young ladies was not their mothers but Isabelle.
