Chapter 168: The Surprise Lanchi Prepared
Chapter 168: The Surprise Lanchi Prepared
In the spacious garden beneath the Old Humanities Building of the Magecraft Institute, the plants bathed in the morning fog and sunshine, exuding a crisp fragrance accompanied by the singing of canaries, the buzzing of bees, and the gentle murmur of a nearby stream. Amidst the blooming flowers and lush grass, two figures stood conversing.
"Why do you suspect that you've been scammed?" asked Rookie Reporter, Lu Weishi.
"Well, I received a fine," Noe sighed. "The amount was so large and outrageous that I had to verify it myself."
The more Noe thought about it, the more convinced she became that Lanchi, that good-for-nothing brat, had messed up somehow and issued the fine incorrectly.
But then again, if Lanchi truly possessed the skill to forge documents to this degree, he wouldn't have to worry about a meal for the rest of his life. Either he would live a life of luxury or the kingdom's prison would take care of him.
Noe recalled the last time she saw Lanchi, engrossed in his study of the law. It was probably then that the little rascal had strayed onto the wrong path.
The urgent task at hand was to verify the authenticity of the fine before the due date. If it turned out to be a fake, Noe resolved to teach that young man a lesson and set him back on the right path. But what if it was real? Noe's feelings were complicated. It would mean that the little brat had actually succeeded in enrolling in the Sage's College!
"May I take a look at the fine? Perhaps I can help you discern its authenticity." Lu Weishi offered with a smile.
Although her major was not in business, as a student of intelligence studies, she was skilled in identifying the authenticity of official documents.
"Be my guest," Noe readily handed over the fine.
Lu Weishi took the document and examined it carefully. Soon, a smile reappeared on her face. "Let me tell you, these types of large fines issued in the personal name of teachers from the Ikelite College are mostly fake. It's a common scam. Official fines should be issued from one institution to another, not from a private individual to a business. It's highly unlikely that a renowned magecraft scholar like Professor Bolao would resort to defrauding wealthy merchants..."
However, her words trailed off as she reached the part where she saw the name of the recipient—Noe Willford.
"!"
Lu Weishi's expression turned surprised, and she immediately stood at attention before Noe, her chest puffed out, and saluted solemnly.
"What's going on with you?" Noe asked, bewildered. She had been all set to go and arrest Lanchi, but now Lu Weishi's attitude had done a complete one-eighty.
"I can assure you of one thing," Lu Weishi's tone changed, taking on a broadcast-like quality.
"What is it?" Noe asked, swallowing nervously. Could this fine be connected to some larger crime?
"This fine is definitely authentic," Lu Weishi asserted, returning the document to Noe with both hands.
"So, that brat really is enrolled in this school?!" Noe exclaimed, her eyes widening. How had Lanchi, who couldn't cast a single spell, managed to get into the Sage's College?! And why was it so impossible to dig up any information about his entrance examination?
The more Noe investigated, the more she suspected that his acceptance letter was a fake. But now it turned out to be genuine. She was starting to doubt her own understanding of the world.
"Of course! This school wouldn't be the same without him! Every report about his achievements is well-received!" Lu Weishi exclaimed cheerfully.
"Every time?"
"Yes," Lu Weishi nodded vigorously.
"...Can you describe what this Lanchi Willford you know is like?"
Noe worried that she and the young reporter were having a cross-server conversation.
"He has black hair and green eyes, he's very handsome, and he looks harmless and gentle on the surface. But sometimes his behavior can be downright sadistic, making one doubt his mental state."
Lu Weishi painted a vivid picture with her words.
"Hmm..."
Noe scratched her head in confusion.
It was definitely that good-for-nothing scoundrel from her family.
Aside from his looks, he was still as useless as ever, with a screw loose upstairs, and given to drunken antics.
Although the young reporter's critique was sharp, it was all true.
"Has Lanchi caused any trouble at school?"
Noe immediately asked the question that had been weighing on her mind.
"Well...not really," Lu Weishi thought for a moment before replying.
In fact, Lanchi had been doing great things at school! She often heard the student council president, Monaster, praise Lanchi for his diligent work and exemplary conduct.
As for outside of school, he had indeed done something big yesterday—he had taken out the Destruction Saintess of the Resurrection Church. No doubt Lanchi was now at the very top of the Resurrection Church's wanted list.
Lu Weishi herself couldn't guess what kind of bounty the heretical sect had placed on Lanchi's head.
"So, do you know how to find Lanchi, fellow student?"
Hearing this, Noe finally breathed a sigh of relief and smiled in relief.
This kid still knew how to surprise people.
As long as he hadn't caused any major trouble at school, all was well!
Lanchi had turned out just as she had expected; he wouldn't be able to stir up any real trouble in the royal capital. After all, Lanchi was the type of paper tiger among spoiled rich kids, and certainly not the kind of monster that would evolve out of control given the right environment.
Noe felt as if a heavy rock that had been pressing on her heart had suddenly vanished, and she was in a wonderful mood.
The 8,000-pound fine didn't really bother her; she would just consider it a celebration of Lanchi's successful enrollment in Ikelite Academy.
"Well, he might be hard to find at the moment since he's currently livestreaming," Lu Weishi said, glancing at the clock tower in the distance.
Lanchi had entered the Shadow World early that morning, and it would be another four days before this particular Shadow World session ended. There was no way he could be found at the Magecraft Institute before then.
"It should be starting soon. I heard that this morning, he'll be presenting a special art, culture, and science performance for everyone. I was planning to head to Jera Memorial Square to gather some report material. Would you like to watch first before heading to the Magecraft Institute?" Lu Weishi asked, turning to Noe.
Lanchi and the others had stayed up late, ending their livestream at 2:00 am, and before signing off, they had announced that they would be starting the next stream after 9:00 am that day.
So, the time was just right.
Being able to witness Lanchi's daily life would surely have improved Lanchi's father's mental fortitude, and seeing Lanchi in the Shadow World probably wouldn't cause his heart to race too much.
"Heh, I'd like to see what this brat is up to," Noe chuckled.
Since the fine was genuine, she didn't feel the need to rush to the Magecraft Institute to verify the situation.
What kind of talent could that good-for-nothing possibly have to put on a performance for the entire school and the passersby of the royal capital?
This was too entertaining.
She couldn't wait to see it for herself.
