Chapter 168: Audacious!
Chapter 168: Audacious!
At the Eastern City Enforcement Bureau.
Chen Hui sat alone in the interrogation room, her body trembling in the confined space.
The door creaked open, and a tall man with a square face and an air of righteousness entered.
"Hello," Chen Hui hurriedly stood up.
"Oh, don't be nervous," the man smiled slightly. "I'm Captain Gao; you can just call me Captain Gao."
"Captain Gao," Chen Hui replied obediently.
"Good, please sit down."
Captain Gao Songbai opened the notebook in front of him. "I heard that you were held captive for over a year. Is that right?"
"Yes, yes," Chen Hui confirmed.
Chen Hui's body shook as she recalled something.
"If you were held captive all this time, how did you manage to escape?" Captain Gao asked.
Chen Hui hesitated for a moment before answering truthfully, "To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what happened. Suddenly, I heard some noise outside, and upon listening carefully, I realized someone had arrived. I couldn't make out their conversation, but then we heard the two men who were guarding us begging for mercy."
"And then?" Captain Gao probed.
"Then, we heard those two men scream, and soon the sounds subsided. We decided to take a chance and used our bodies to ram the door, hoping to attract the attention of the person outside and get rescued."
"Oh? How did you know the person outside was a good person?" Captain Gao twirled his pen, a smirk playing on his lips.
"He really was a good person!" Chen Hui exclaimed.
A moment later, she realized her emotional outburst and quickly added, "At that time, we were also holding onto a sliver of hope. We thought that whoever killed those two men must be a good person. Even if they weren't, we were sick of being held captive. Death would have been a relief."
"Hmm," Captain Gao nodded. "What you're saying does make some sense."
Chen Hui vaguely sensed something amiss.
Because a normal person, no matter what they were thinking, would show sympathy on their face upon hearing such a story. But this man was too cold, almost inhumanly so.
"Do you know what that person looked like?" Captain Gao asked.
Chen Hui was taken aback and shook her head.
"Don't you even remember what they looked like?" Captain Gao's tone turned cold.
"They were covering their face," Chen Hui explained instinctively.
"Oh? What were they covering their face with?" Captain Gao thought of the scene captured by the surveillance camera.
A person wearing a mask.
He had found that person suspicious at the time.
When he asked around the neighborhood, no one remembered seeing them.
Unfortunately, that person never appeared again, as if they had vanished from the neighborhood.
"Captain Gao, why are you asking about them?" Chen Hui couldn't help but ask.
Shouldn't the questions focus on the murderer? Why keep probing about the person who rescued them?
"Why?" Captain Gao sneered twice.
"You said that a person named Zhang Hong deceived you and held you captive in a basement for a year and a half, right?"
"Yes, it was her!" Chen Hui's emotions rose again.
"It was her! She tricked me, saying she had a job offer. Then she knocked me out and imprisoned me in the basement, and..." Chen Hui's voice trailed off as she began to sob.
"Zhang Hong is dead."
"What?!"
Chen Hui was stunned. She stared at the person before her in disbelief.
"Captain Gao, did you say Zhang Hong is dead?"
"Dead or not, don't you know?" Captain Gao sneered.
"Captain Gao, what do you mean?"
"You said it was because of her that you were imprisoned, so you have both the motive and the time to commit the murder. If not you, then who else could it be?" Gao Songbai shouted.
"No, no, no."
Chen Hui was trembling with fear.
"Captain Gao, I didn’t kill anyone, I didn’t kill anyone!"
She had indeed hoped for Zhang Hong’s death.
But she had never had the capability to do so; the other woman’s arm was thicker than her thigh.
Secondly, she didn’t want to become a murderer and end up in prison, repeating her previous life.
Suddenly, she remembered something.
Before that person left, he had specifically said something to them.
Was it him who killed Zhang Hong?
The atmosphere in the interrogation room was heavy.
Almost a minute passed before Gao Songbai spoke again.
"Do you know who it was? Actually, I know it wasn’t you. As long as you reveal the identity of the person who saved you, I’ll let you go." Gao Songbai said.
"Captain Gao, I really don’t know who saved us. I told you, he was masked."
Chen Hui shook her head repeatedly.
Not only did she not know who the person was, but even if she did, she couldn’t betray him. Wouldn’t that be repaying kindness with ingratitude?
"Think carefully. Even if he was masked, a few words might give away his identity."
"Captain Gao, he didn’t say anything. He just asked about our situation and then let us go."
"Ha ha ha."
Gao Songbai suddenly laughed a couple of times.
"Chen Hui, I’m giving you a chance. It’s best if you tell me now. Otherwise, someone else might not be as patient as I and sit here talking to you."
"Captain Gao, what do you mean?"
Chen Hui’s face turned pale.
"Think carefully. Even if not for yourself, then for your family. I’ll be back in ten minutes, and I hope you’ll give me the answer I want." Gao Songbai smiled meaningfully and walked out.
It would be better if Chen Hui spoke up voluntarily.
If she didn’t, someone else would force her to.
But whether she spoke up voluntarily or was forced, the outcome for her and her family was already predetermined.
Ten minutes later, Gao Songbai walked in again.
But this time, he received the same response.
Chen Hui looked at him with great unease.
Although this was at the Law Enforcement Bureau, if he decided to hit her, she wouldn’t have much of a choice.
However, to her surprise, he just nodded and let her go.
Her parents and brother had been waiting for a long time. Seeing her come out, they quickly surrounded her, their eyes full of expectation.
In their view, this must mean that the matter had been resolved, and the murderer would soon be brought to justice.
"Dad, Mom, let’s talk about it at home."
Chen Hui was eager to leave.
Indeed, that person’s advice was right; she shouldn’t have placed her hopes on the Law Enforcement Bureau.
She regretted not hiding after coming back. The person who interrogated her might very well be the same kind of person as Zhang Hong!
She felt a strong sense of unease.
"?"
The middle-aged couple, though puzzled, could only follow her.
As the four of them walked down the street, the middle-aged man was about to ask a question when two vans suddenly pulled up beside them. The doors opened, and six or seven rugged men got out.
Before the four could react, they were put into burlap bags. When they tried to call for help, they were hit in the stomach, leaving them in too much pain to speak.
In a matter of seconds, the four were dragged into the vans, leaving the onlookers stunned and still in shock.
After all, the Law Enforcement Bureau was not far away, and this happened in broad daylight, under the clear sky!
