Chapter 1675: A War with No Victors (One Hundred and Twenty-Five)
Chapter 1675: A War with No Victors (One Hundred and Twenty-Five)
After that unfortunate soul met his end due to an Unbreakable Vow, the dour-faced Head of the Auror Office finally chose to reveal the cause of that poor man's death, offering an explanation to the British witches and wizards who had been eagerly awaiting the outcome.
And so, on the evening of the press conference, a deluge of owls carrying the latest issue of the Prophet took flight across Britain, instantly causing an uproar.
No one had expected the outcome to be like this.
Many witches and wizards questioned the Ministry's explanation, but the front-page article had already laid out everything clearly and even disclosed the identities of the heavyweight officials who were present at the scene.
It was as if they were saying, "This is the conclusion, and I don't care if anyone doubts it." They even included the unfortunate man's death report.
Yes, the front page of the newspaper boldly displayed that report.
It was only after reading this explosive headline that people suddenly realized, "Oh, so that guy was a remnant of Voldemort's followers!"
However, it was also because of this detailed report that everyone understood the difficulties the Ministry had encountered during their investigation.
They could all see that the new Minister had done his best.
And for this reason, despite the outcome being less than satisfactory, Kingsley still earned the understanding of the entire wizarding community.
Not long after, a voice emerged from an unknown source, suggesting that all witches and wizards who had ever been associated with Voldemort should be interrogated.
If they also lost their lives due to an Unbreakable Vow, like the previous unfortunate soul, then they were undoubtedly Voldemort's remnants.
No one would sympathize with those scoundrels who tried to use werewolves to stir up turmoil in the entire British wizarding community, but there were plenty of people who wanted to take the opportunity to get rid of them.
Most importantly, someone pointed out that the new Minister's senior advisor was the greatest Seer of the century.
With Albert's cooperation, the Ministry had the capability to screen out most of the remaining Death Eaters within a short period.
However, this matter put a lot of pressure on those pure-bloods with hidden agendas.
It was obviously impossible to expect the Ministry to be completely united, but even if they wanted to do something, Kingsley only needed to guide them slightly, and even if they weren't remnants of Voldemort, they would likely still face a lot of trouble in the future.
But to leave all the problems to Kingsley?
That would also mean they had to give up a lot of things.
In the end, however, everyone compromised because if the werewolf disaster in the next month was mishandled, it would only become more terrifying.
No one wanted to touch that mess.
Kingsley was more than happy to reclaim this authority, and he had already planned how to deal with it.
...
"We have been in contact with Mrs. Parkinson," Kingsley said as he met with Albert, updating him on the current progress.
He had no choice; Albert always seemed so "busy" and uninterested in what came next.
So, whenever there was something major, Kingsley would first get in touch with him and seek his opinion.
"So, you're looking for me because of this matter?" Albert asked.
"I need to make an Unbreakable Vow with Mrs. Parkinson to reassure everyone involved in this transaction," Kingsley explained.
"I can't help you bypass an Unbreakable Vow," Albert said, looking deeply into Kingsley's eyes. "Of course, if you want me to implant such a memory into Mrs. Parkinson, that's not a problem, but it's difficult to do so without leaving any loopholes."
"After the Ministry resolves the issues with werewolves and Voldemort's remnants, as long as they don't cause any more trouble, we won't take any action against them," Kingsley said, referring to the negotiations with Mrs. Parkinson.
"That doesn't sound like something you would do," Albert said with a strange expression. "So, do you want me to give that list to Nelson Tobin's group?"
"I have an agreement with Nelson Tobin," Kingsley said softly.
As for what Nelson Tobin's group of avengers wanted to do, it had nothing to do with Kingsley.
That was fine.
Especially after learning that Voldemort's remnants had created an even larger number of werewolves, intending to take revenge on the Ministry during the next full moon, Kingsley showed great "sincerity" in the negotiations.
He indicated that they could make an Unbreakable Vow, but all the contents must be planned in advance, and even backups were left.
If anyone dared to break the vow, they would face death, and both sides even allowed witnesses to this agreement.
The most decisive move by Kingsley, however, was to not hide anything. He directly held a Wizengamot conference to discuss the matter publicly. This maneuver shocked everyone into silence, as they had probably never seen Kingsley operate like this before.
Albert also attended this emergency meeting, and it took a full day of discussions before they finally finalized the result.
The outcome, of course, was still satisfactory to most witches and wizards, and most pure-bloods gave Kingsley high praise.
After all, it was Kingsley who made the Unbreakable Vow, and he compromised with Voldemort's remnants for the peace of the entire British wizarding community. Otherwise, if the large number of werewolves caused chaos, even if the entire Ministry mobilized, they wouldn't be able to resolve the problem quickly, and it would only plunge the wizarding world into disorder.
As for why it took so long, it was naturally due to the discussion of the content of the Unbreakable Vow.
When Albert talked about this, Isabelle looked at her husband with a strange expression.
"Was it you who made Kingsley do that?" she asked.
It was as if he was indirectly telling everyone, "I, Kingsley, act with integrity."
If Voldemort's remnants really did create a large number of werewolves, and the retaliation during the next full moon truly threw the wizarding world into chaos, then everyone would share the blame! No one would be allowed to escape, and at most, the entire Ministry and the Wizengamot would be disbanded together.
Kingsley's actions indeed left many people speechless, and the main reason was that the Wizengamot couldn't say anything about it. Organizing trials was merely one of the most common functions of the Wizengamot members.
After laying everything out in the open, if any problems arose, no one could blame him because Kingsley made the Unbreakable Vow for the peace of the entire wizarding world. He didn't have to go to such lengths, and the Ministry owed him a Merlin First Class honor.
Of course, Kingsley sought out Albert mainly because he needed supporters, or at the very least, he needed the agreement of Albert's faction.
Otherwise, if they were unwilling to compromise, the mess that followed would be difficult to clean up.
Politics was always about mutual compromise; mutually assured destruction was never a good choice.
As for those Voldemort remnants who jumped ship and survived, naturally, everyone would help keep an eye on them! If they dared to cause trouble, their identities would be exposed as planned, and they would be eliminated.
