Chapter 164: Idolizing White Fang (3k)
Chapter 164: Idolizing White Fang (3k)
Kakashi, who was about to begin his mission, paused in surprise. After a moment's thought, he decided to follow Mu Yue.
If it wasn't for luck, he was curious how Obito had managed to do it.
Mu Yue, with her Byakugan and Root Organization training, was an expert at stealth. She began to tail Obito, who remained completely unaware, focused solely on his mission target.
"Pale yellow fur, about twenty centimeters tall..." Obito muttered the description of his target as he scanned the area.
He even opened the lids of garbage cans, searching for the dog.
Kakashi, witnessing Obito's actions, was speechless. What kind of dog would hide in a garbage can?
"Well, well, if it isn't little Obito. What are you looking for?"
Suddenly, an elderly man with a cheerful smile called out to Obito.
"I'm looking for a small, pale yellow dog, about this big." Obito gestured as he explained.
"A pale yellow dog, huh? I haven't seen one, but there haven't been many stray dogs around lately. Though, I recall that fellow, Shiki, likes to wander about. Let me take you to him and we can ask." The elderly man offered.
"Thank you so much, Grandpa. I really appreciate your help," Obito expressed his gratitude.
The elderly man then led Obito to find this person named Shiki.
"A pale yellow dog... I think I saw one in the eastern part of the main district, but I can't recall exactly where." Shiki, another elderly man, furrowed his brow in thought.
"Your memory isn't what it used to be, old man. That's not very helpful," the first elderly man grumbled, knowing that the eastern part of the main district was quite large.
"Hehe, don't worry, Grandpa. It's still a huge help. With your help, I've narrowed it down from the entire Konoha to just the eastern section." Obito thanked the elderly man once again.
Obito then made his way to the eastern part of the main district in Konoha. However, his obvious search drew the attention of yet another elderly man. With their guidance, Obito quickly located the small dog and captured it with his breathing technique.
"Well, Kakashi, do you still think this is just luck?" Mu Yue turned to face Kakashi and asked.
"No, this is a victory of information gathering," Kakashi admitted, not wanting to be stubborn in front of Mu Yue.
He had also sought information from passersby, but unlike Obito, most people were indifferent and tended to brush him off with casual replies, or even ignore him altogether.
The elderly people Obito encountered, on the other hand, were eager to help and went out of their way to provide assistance, even offering to use their connections to find the target if they didn't know themselves.
"But under the same conditions, I could do better," Kakashi stated.
Obito could have completed the mission in a shorter time if he hadn't paused to perform some peculiar actions, which ultimately prolonged the task to almost an hour.
Kakashi even witnessed Obito helping an elderly woman down a flight of stairs during his mission.
With the same information advantage as Obito, Kakashi believed he could compress the mission time to under forty minutes.
"The fact that Obito can bring you to unequal conditions is a testament to his strength," Mu Yue shook her head.
Insisting on equal conditions was unfair, as Kakashi wouldn't have the same level of popularity as Obito, and thus, wouldn't have the same advantages.
"Why focus on competing under the same conditions instead of utilizing your strengths to compensate for your teammate's weaknesses? Obito may be a bit slow, but he has an information advantage. You can work together, combining your agility with his information, and improve the efficiency of your missions," Mu Yue continued.
Kakashi remained silent, but with his mission experience, he knew Mu Yue was right.
Mu Yue then led the trio back to the Hokage building to turn in their mission.
"Wow, you've already completed the third mission? That was fast!" the registrar exclaimed.
[Disciple Might Guy worked diligently and completed the assigned task. Reward: Chakra +10. Additional reward for being accompanied by the teacher in person: Chakra +5]
[Disciple Uchiha Obito worked diligently and completed the assigned task. Reward: Chakra +10. Additional reward for being accompanied by the teacher in person: Chakra +5]
"Fifteen points again. It seems the rewards at the same level can vary depending on the difficulty," Mu Yue thought to herself.
"Well, Kakashi, are you convinced now? Ha! I, Uchiha Obito, am the king of missions in Konoha!" Obito boasted, standing with his hands on his hips and a smug smile on his face.
"You're acting so proud over a few D-rank missions. Someone who doesn't know better might think you completed S-rank missions," Kakashi felt a twinge of annoyance at Obito's arrogant demeanor.
"How would you know I can't do S-rank missions if you haven't seen me try?" Obito was full of confidence.
"Good job today, Obito!" Might Guy gave Obito a thumbs-up in praise.
Finding the target first once could be attributed to luck, but doing so three times in a row was undeniable proof of Obito's skill.
"Let's celebrate the first day of our missions with a barbecue!" Mu Yue suggested.
Having completed three missions in a row, along with some miscellaneous tasks, it was now lunchtime. Mu Yue decided to forgo taking on another mission and instead treat her students to a meal.
"Yay!" Obito cheered.
"Hey, Kakashi, do you want to have a meat-eating contest later?" Might Guy challenged, eager to win at something after Obito's three consecutive mission victories.
Initially, Kakashi felt a little uncomfortable and awkward, as usually with barbecues, everyone grilled their own food.
But after eating a piece of meat that Mu Yue had forcefully put into his bowl, Kakashi silently accepted her kindness.
Kakashi was perplexed. They were all using the same grill and seasonings, and he didn't see Mu Yue add any secret sauces or ingredients, yet the meat she grilled tasted far better than anything he had ever eaten—it was almost heavenly.
Due to certain circumstances, Kakashi had learned to cook for himself at a young age, and he considered himself a decent cook. But when it came to Mu Yue, he felt utterly bewildered by her culinary skills.
"Could it be her mastery of heat control, ensuring that every piece is cooked to perfection?" Kakashi wondered to himself.
If he hadn't known that there was no ninjutsu that could enhance the flavor of food, he would have suspected Mu Yue of using such magic.
After they finished eating, the four of them didn't immediately get up to leave. Instead, they lingered and chatted.
"Teacher Mu Yue, you're like my Rikudo Sennin!" Obito exclaimed, using a metaphor to express his gratitude and admiration for Mu Yue.
"More like a barbecue sage," Mu Yue chuckled, gently tapping Obito's head.
"Hey, do any of you have a ninja that you particularly admire?" Obito scratched his head and smiled as he brought up the topic.
"If we're talking about admiration, then it's definitely my father and Teacher Mu Yue," Might Guy declared proudly.
Kakashi didn't join in on the topic. At this point in his life, there wasn't anyone he particularly admired or aspired to be like.
"As for me, there's a ninja I deeply admire as well," Mu Yue said with a smile.
"Wow, Teacher Mu Yue, who's the ninja that you admire? I'm so curious!" Obito's eyes lit up with excitement.
To her disciples, Mu Yue was both a friendly and mysterious presence.
Even though she had started as their mere Chunin teacher, her mastery of various ninjutsu and kinjutsu, as well as her unfathomable strength, made it clear that she was far from ordinary. Her request that they keep their master-disciple relationship a secret, even Obito with his thick skull, could tell that Mu Yue was no ordinary teacher.
And now, to discover that this mysterious and powerful teacher had someone she admired—Obito was intrigued.
Might Guy also leaned in, eager to listen, as curious as Obito.
Kakashi, however, wasn't as interested. He figured it would be one of the Sannin or the Hokages.
"He's known as the White Fang of Konoha, a formidable ninja who has made remarkable contributions to the village. On the battlefield, his name struck fear into the hearts of his enemies. He was an exceptionally outstanding Konoha ninja," Mu Yue said, her eyes sparkling with admiration as she spoke.
"The legendary White Fang of Konoha? I think I've heard of him. He's supposed to be incredibly powerful," Obito chimed in excitedly.
"I've heard of him too. He was a strong ninja, but I think he sacrificed himself later on," Might Guy added.
The fame of the White Fang still resonated in Konoha, even among students like them.
Kakashi looked at Mu Yue with a hint of surprise in his eyes. He never expected that such an exceptional ninja as Mu Yue would idolize his father, who had taken his own life.
Although he hadn't known Mu Yue for long, Kakashi had to admit that she excelled in many aspects and was far superior to his previous mentor.
Hearing Might Guy's words, Kakashi's memories stirred, and he clenched his fists. Without a word, he stood up and left the barbecue restaurant.
"Hey, Kakashi, where are you going? Are you feeling unwell after eating?" Obito asked, confused by Kakashi's abrupt departure in the middle of their conversation.
Kakashi didn't respond to Obito's question and simply walked away.
"I've paid the bill. You guys can stay here and chat for a bit or go for a walk. We'll meet up again at Training Ground 22 at 1:30 p.m.," Mu Yue said as she stood up. "I'll go check on Kakashi."
"This Kakashi guy is so unpredictable. His mood is even harder to read than the girls in our class," Obito couldn't help but complain.
Might Guy was also left scratching his head, unsure of what had just happened.
After leaving the restaurant, Kakashi wandered aimlessly until he eventually found himself by the riverbank, sitting on the shore and staring blankly at the flowing water.
"Made remarkable contributions and was an exceptionally outstanding ninja... If that's truly the case, then why was he driven to suicide by those people..." Kakashi mumbled to himself.
"A ninja must uphold the rules and always put the mission first. Only then can one be considered a true ninja."
"Is that truly what you believe?" Kakashi heard Mu Yue's voice from behind him.
