Chapter 164: Final Exams (Third Update)
Chapter 164: Final Exams (Third Update)
"It seems that the claim about Unforgivable Curses subtly influencing one's mind isn't just a joke. In the future, I should try to use them as little as possible!"
Sighing, Jerry waved his wand to cast a Flame Magic spell, reducing Professor Quirrell's body to ashes. He then left the Forbidden Forest and sneaked back to Hogwarts Castle.
The white light from the Unicorn wasn't an attack spell; it was the Unicorn's unique holy magic. Its purpose was simple: to purify the mind. Or, as Jerry felt it, to return to oneself.
Ever since he learned the three Unforgivable Curses, he had been practicing them almost every day to achieve the necessary killing power. To master these curses, one's emotions were crucial. The more malice you felt, the more powerful the curse became.
Over time, although the curses wouldn't truly affect one's soul, they still had side effects. Just as a person who kills frequently becomes desensitized to life, someone who constantly thinks about murder and torture can easily become a psychopath.
Thanks to the Mind Enhancer, Jerry had tried to eliminate these negative emotions, but he was still subtly influenced to some degree. After his mind was purified by the Unicorn's holy magic and he returned to his true self, he reflected on his past actions and realized that some of them were indeed unwise.
It wasn't that he had killed too much, but rather that in some situations, choosing not to kill might have been more beneficial for him. In other cases, a gentler approach could have been more effective.
He didn't shy away from killing, but he wanted to make decisions more rationally, rather than being swayed by negative emotions.
Of course, he still needed to use the Unforgivable Curses, but now that he had fully mastered them, he no longer needed to practice them dozens of times a day, so the influence wouldn't be as significant.
Still, when other spells could solve a problem, it was better to avoid using the Unforgivable Curses, especially the Cruciatus Curse and the Killing Curse. The Imperius Curse was actually much less problematic.
The Cruciatus Curse was purely for torture, and the Killing Curse was for murder. The Imperius Curse was considered evil mainly because it could control a person's mind, but using it didn't generate negative emotions.
A few days later, Quirrell's disappearance naturally sparked some rumors within Hogwarts.
However, it wasn't a major scandal. Many young wizards speculated that Quirrell, being overly timid and almost dying during last year's Halloween, had simply left without a word.
Some young wizards claimed that Quirrell had been threatened by Professor Snape and resigned as a result. This was partly because some had seen Snape threatening Quirrell, and it was well-known that Snape had always wanted to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts.
The school didn't make any official statement, but for the next one and a half months, all Defense Against the Dark Arts classes were temporarily taken over by Professor Snape.
This was good news for Jerry, as Snape's Dark Magic skills were well-respected. Replacing the always trembling Quirrell was a significant improvement.
However, this was a nightmare for Harry. Originally, he only had to deal with Snape's bias in Potions class, but now even Defense Against the Dark Arts became a target for Snape's sarcasm or arbitrary point deductions.
It wasn't just Harry; for most young wizards at Hogwarts, having Snape temporarily take over Defense Against the Dark Arts was far from ideal.
Because the final Defense Against the Dark Arts exam would be set by Professor Snape.
And Professor Snape's exams were the strictest of all subjects. Previously, it was just the Potions class, but now there was an additional Defense Against the Dark Arts exam.
It was like a double hell mode!
After dealing with Quirrell, Jerry's school life returned to normal. Apart from occasional night outings to the Forbidden Forest to gather food for Norbert, most of his time was spent studying and researching magic to enhance his skills.
Sometimes, he would hang out at Hagrid's hut with Harry and the others, but most of his visits were to bond with the Thestrals behind Hagrid's hut.
Through his persistent efforts, he had successfully befriended a mature Thestral.
When the time was right, Jerry planned to take it away.
In the first week of June, the tense final exams finally arrived. The weather, which had been cool before, now turned muggy.
Most subjects had both written and practical exams, with only a few, like History of Magic, having only written exams.
All the quills for the written exams were provided by the teachers, and new quills had been enchanted with anti-cheating spells.
For the practical exams:
The Charms exam required young wizards to use the Dancing Charm to make a pineapple perform a tap dance across a table.
The Transfiguration exam required turning a mouse into a snuffbox—the more ornate the box, the higher the score.
The Potions exam involved brewing a Forgetfulness Potion. The better the potion, the higher the score. Professor Snape patrolled behind the young wizards, deducting points on the spot for any mistakes.
Jerry noticed that many young wizards made mistakes not because they forgot the brewing procedure, but because they were scared by Professor Snape's occasional presence behind them.
The Defense Against the Dark Arts exam required using the Disarming Charm to make Professor Snape retreat. The more steps he took back, the higher the score.
Jerry was the last to take this test. He could make Professor Snape fly, but he couldn't do that, so he waited until everyone else had finished to compare their scores and adjust his magic strength accordingly.
The final exam was History of Magic, which concluded around four in the afternoon.
As soon as the exam ended, Hermione, like after other subjects, immediately found Jerry to compare answers.
Indeed, high-achieving students enjoyed comparing answers after exams, whether in Muggle schools or wizarding schools.
"Hermione, you really don't need to worry so much. You've studied so hard, and this exam is no challenge for you!"
After comparing answers, it was confirmed that Hermione's written answers were all correct. Jerry shrugged helplessly.
Hermione was actually very strong, excelling in many areas compared to other young wizards. However, she lacked confidence and always feared that something would go wrong during exams, resulting in less-than-ideal scores.
In reality, her written exams were almost always perfect.
"Jerry, Hermione, over here, over here!"
As Jerry and Hermione walked to the lawn outside the castle, they heard two familiar voices from under a nearby tree.
It was Harry and Ron, who had completely relaxed after the exams, lying on the grass, chatting, and enjoying the sun.
A group of good friends!
