Chapter 163: The Frost Giants' Plot
Chapter 163: The Frost Giants' Plot
Sif nearly fainted when she received a bill the moment she walked through the door. "How much? 1880!?"
"Don't worry, I have a plan. I'll take a part-time job during our investigation breaks," Thor bravely stepped forward to take responsibility.
"Let's not, Thor. You are the future king of Asgard. Working a part-time job isn't suitable for you," Sif replied, her head aching as she gently declined Thor's offer. She changed the subject, "Did you find anything today?"
"Indeed, I recited the prophecy," Thor said, recalling the ancient song.
"Regarding the cold wave, I remember that the Frost Giants once invaded Midgard. Their king, Laufey, attempted to use the Casket of Ancient Winters to freeze the entire realm."
Sif, exhausted from a long day, leaned heavily on her weary body as she analyzed, "The prophecy mentions a giant holding a casket, which matches. However, the Frost Giants signed a peace treaty with Asgard, so they can't invade at will. Besides, the Casket of Ancient Winters is in your father's vault, protected by the Destroyer armor."
Thor's brow furrowed, "But the situation is strange. Both of us are trapped here, unable to use our divine powers, and Mjolnir has turned into a human form, rendering it unusable."
He strongly suspected it was a Frost Giant plot.
"Why can't you use it?"
Mjolnir, concerned about his reputation in the hammer world, started to protest, "I can endure it. Just grip and swing me hard."
Thor: ...
He loved his hammer, but the idea of gripping a man's handle to attack was too abstract for him. He couldn't do it!
"Can I hold your leg and swing you instead?" Thor suggested a compromise.
"But my leg is part of my body, not a hammer handle," Mjolnir resisted, his face showing clear reluctance.
Sif rubbed her temples, "I'll take Thor to the blacksmith to have a new hammer forged. It will serve as a temporary solution."
"Is there a blacksmith here?"
"Lu Ban, our landlord, is also a blacksmith. He's very skilled."
"Will it be expensive? Can I custom-order it? I want the same design as Mjolnir."
"Wait!"
Mjolnir interrupted, his eyes wide with disbelief as he looked at Sif, "You're introducing Thor to a new hammer right in front of me?"
Sif: ...
Thor: ...
They both felt a bit guilty, like they were cheating on their significant other.
"Everything we do is to return to Asgard, Mjolnir. Once we're back, I'll ask Father to restore you to your original form, and we'll be the best partners again."
"I don't want to go back to my original form. Stay with your new hammer!"
After experiencing freedom of movement, Mjolnir was now disdainful of his former shape. If he could switch freely, that might be different, but who knew if Odin had that power.
He stormed downstairs in a huff.
Sif, a bit worried, asked, "Will he be alright?"
"Don't worry, he just went to play some games."
Thor paused, his eyes drifting, "I noticed that the computer seems very helpful for research. It could help us escape. Do you think we should buy one?"
Sif stared at him for three minutes, "Thor, you just want to look up information, right?"
"O-of course!"
Sif looked away and nodded, "Let's earn some money to forge your hammer first. We can discuss the computer later."
...
Mjolnir exaggerated his story to his new friends.
"Clearly, Thor doesn't want you anymore," Lu Ban said solemnly, handing Mjolnir a few books.
The Substitute for the CEO's Moonlight
Ten Years of Marriage, the Substitute is Me
Dumping the Moonlight, I Become the Official Wife
"What are these?" Mjolnir looked at the books in his hands, confused.
"These are stories about substitutes rising to power," Lu Ban patted Mjolnir's shoulder, his tone heavy, "Men are fickle. They might say they'll use you later, but once they have a new one, they won't want the old one."
"No way, I'm very popular."
Mjolnir started to stutter, feeling a bit panicked. He was a treasure of Asgard, after all.
"Is there anyone better than you back home?"
Thinking of Gungnir in Odin's hands, Mjolnir nodded, even more anxious, "What should I do?"
"I suggest you find a new home now," Lu Ban casually moved aside, placing a controller in Mjolnir's hand, "It's your turn to play."
Mjolnir stared at the controller, dazed for a moment, then said dejectedly, "Brother Lu, can you take me in for a while?"
"Ah, my place is already quite full," Lu Ban hesitated, then reluctantly said, "Alright, alright. Since you're my little brother, I'll take you in for a bit."
"Thank you, Brother Lu, you're so kind!"
"Not a problem, I'm just a good-hearted person!"
...
Under the scorching sun, at a construction site that wasn't yet complete, Sif blushed as she made her request. Expenses were piling up, and she had no savings left.
"Lu Brother, can you advance me next month's wages?"
"You can't do that!"
Lu Deng shook his head, "Sif, it's not that I don't want to help, but you just received this month's pay. Asking for next month's pay is a bit excessive. The project isn't finished yet, and if you take the money and run, what will I do?"
"In the name of Odin..." Sif's face flushed with embarrassment as she bit her lip, "I see that the construction of the Boundary Tower is short on workers..."
"Ai, you work hard. Fine, I'll do a good deed. Here, take six thousand. Use it for now."
“Thanks, Den! Thanks, Den!”
Shief was on the verge of tears, grateful for the help. She had come to realize how important money was in this world. The former Warrior of the Heavenly Palace had lowered her pride to earn a living.
After Shief left, all the workers stopped their activities. Luke waved, and a worker hiding in the shadows stiffly walked over, holding a camera. Inside was a video of Shief bowing and smiling as she asked for an advance on her wages.
Luke reviewed the footage and sighed, “To be honest, if a girl would do something like this for me, I’d be willing to move in with her!”
How could Thor not be moved by such dedication?
...
That evening, Mjolnir strutted around, proudly announcing that he had found a new place to stay, a single room downstairs, and that he would be giving up his bed for Shief and Thor to share.
Considering the family’s financial situation, Shief agreed to Hammer’s living arrangement. Thor was a bit hesitant, but the thought of Shief’s prediction that she would take him to the blacksmith to make a new hammer, which would surely upset the old man, left him no choice but to reluctantly let go.
Without Mjolnir’s constant presence, the two of them were left alone in the same room. Now that they had lost their divine powers and become ordinary humans, many awkward situations naturally arose.
For example, when Shief was preparing to take a bath, the door happened to be unlocked, and Thor happened to walk in, catching a glimpse of her healthy, beautiful, sun-kissed body.
Or when they shared a bed, and he woke up in the middle of the night with Shief in his arms, his little head being particularly mischievous.
After a few such awkward incidents, Thor deeply realized that Shief was not just a partner in battle but also a beautiful woman.
Once he realized this, Thor felt everything was off and decided to sleep on the floor, becoming more cautious and hesitant around Shief, avoiding eye contact.
Shief felt a mix of joy and worry. She was glad that Thor’s attitude towards her had changed, but she was concerned that he was now avoiding her.
Watching the two of them from above, Luke couldn’t help but feel exasperated. Thor was being too indecisive; if it were him, he would have taken a shortcut by now.
“Looks like a little push is needed.”
...
“Luyan, why are there only three monsters?”
“Because I got hit by a car before they released more.”
“I understand every word you say, but when put together, it makes no sense.”
“That’s not the point.” Luyan put down the controller and sighed, “Thor, all you do is play games with me and Mimi. You go out for a walk but never find anything to do. Is it right to live off Shief’s hard-earned money?”
Thor, who was fighting a Tiger Vanguard, paused, “We have a division of labor. Shief earns the money, and I gather intelligence...”
“I don’t understand what you mean. Earning a living is usually the man’s job. It’s not impossible for a woman to do it, but Shief’s work is dirty and exhausting. How can you live off her money with a clear conscience?”
Thor thought about Shief’s tired face when she came home every day. His expression darkened, and he put down the controller, “You’re right. I shouldn’t let Shief carry the burden alone. I’ll find a job too!”
Security guard Lu Jie, passing by, stopped when he heard this, “Want me to take you to a job interview?”
“Thanks a lot!”
Thirty minutes later.
Thor, dressed in a suit, stood in front of a skyscraper.
“Brother, consider the suit a sponsorship. Go on in, I’ll wait out here. If you don’t get the job, we’ll try the next place.” Lu Jie waved him off.
“No worries, I’ll nail it.”
Thor confidently strode inside.
“What’s your education level?”
“What’s education?”
“What skills do you have?”
“I can ride a horse and wield a sword, though I prefer a hammer. I can take on a thousand enemies in battle.”
“What do you think sets you apart from other applicants?”
“I am... I’m very strong and have a robust body.”
“You should apply for a security position, not sales.” The interviewer flipped through Thor’s blank resume and shook his head.
“I’m not applying for sales.”
“The recruiter lured you here, and we’d tell you the positions are full and suggest sales instead.” The interviewer sneered, “Alright, go to the security department on the first floor. They hire security guards.”
The security captain on the first floor was pleased with Thor’s muscular build, “You’re a good prospect, a natural-born security saint. You can start right away.”
Thor held his head high, “Wages?”
“3000.”
“Too low. I want 10,000.”
Shief earns 6,000 a month, and as a prince of Asgard, he deserved more.
The security captain, who had been smiling at him, suddenly lost his grin.
“Get two men to throw this big lummox out.”
Wanting a high salary, huh?
Thor, looking bewildered, was escorted out and saw Lu Jie, who had a “told you so” look on his face.
Over the next few hours, Lu Jie took Thor to seven or eight places, and each time, Thor was politely turned away after stating his desired salary.
Finally, Lu Jie sighed, “You won’t do this job or that job. Do you want to go work at a construction site?”
Shief’s workplace?
Thor nodded thoughtfully, “Can I take a look?”
“Sure.”
I was waiting for you to say that!
