Chapter 163: Night of the Fireflies
Chapter 163: Night of the Fireflies
While Naoki slept, a group of Pokemon played outside.
Golurk felt that something was amiss with Naoki's body; it seemed like he had fallen ill.
Feeling concerned, in between instructing Dragonite and Machoke on their moves, Golurk would periodically check on Naoki inside the house.
Only when it heard Naoki snoring did it finally ease its worries.
Gradually, night fell.
Naoki still hadn't woken up, and a few Pokemon with rumbling stomachs exchanged glances, tacitly deciding not to disturb him and let him rest a while longer.
Golurk tiptoed to the fridge, opened it, and took out several large cups of fruit juice and milk. It then retrieved a large bag of Berries that Naoki had bought in town from the cabinet.
It handed the milk to the waiting Machoke and Dragonite.
The three Pokemon quietly left the room with the Berries and milk in hand, even thoughtfully closing the door behind them.
On the clean, soft grass, Golurk, holding a Berry, called out to the group of Pokemon playing outside, "Agas!"
Upon hearing its voice, a crowd of Pokemon, including Mudsdale and Alolan Ninetales, gathered around.
Golurk led Machoke and Dragonite in distributing the Berries to everyone, indicating that this would be their dinner, and that Naoki needed more rest, so he wouldn't be cooking tonight.
The group of Pokemon readily agreed, and although the meal was simple, they still enjoyed it immensely.
Unlike ordinary fruit, Berries were packed with rich nutrients and energy. Pokemon like Mudsdale could fill their stomachs with just two Berries.
After dinner, the sky gradually darkened.
Golurk, like an excited child, put away the leftover Berries and milk cups back into the house.
When it came out again, it saw Dragonite and Machoke by the river, watching fireflies.
Every evening, these tiny insects emitting faint luminescence would gather by the river, creating a beautiful sight alongside the gurgling waters.
A brilliant idea suddenly popped into Golurk's mind.
"What if we catch these fireflies and release them inside the room? Wouldn't we be able to enjoy this beautiful scene all the time?"
Golurk found the bag used for carrying Berries and called over Pangoro, Alolan Sandslash, Mudsdale, and Aurorus to help capture the fireflies and put them into the bag.
Upon hearing Golurk's plan, the Pokemon's eyes lit up, and they eagerly joined the firefly-catching endeavor.
Each of them displayed their unique abilities—Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Gust, and more—all at once.
The result was that they did catch fireflies, but none of them were glowing.
Golurk couldn't help but facepalm. "Agas…"
It handed the bag to Machoke and then personally demonstrated the proper way to capture the fireflies.
Slowing its steps, it focused its attention, its golden pupils locking onto a firefly floating quietly in the air.
In the next second, Golurk pounced, trapping the firefly between its clasped paws.
Dragonite, Alolan Sandslash, Mudsdale, Machoke, and Pangoro gathered around.
Golurk carefully opened its palms, revealing a firefly flickering with yellow-green luminescence.
"Agas."
After the demonstration, Golurk stuffed the firefly into the bag.
Light bulbs seemed to turn on in the minds of the witnessing Pokemon.
They imitated Golurk's method and began to capture fireflies in the same way.
Surprisingly, this method proved to be quite effective.
In no time, the bag was filled with fireflies.
All the other fireflies along the riverbank were also startled and flew away.
Golurk, holding the bag, couldn't wait to release these beautiful fireflies into the room to share the sight with Naoki.
The group of Pokemon rushed into the dimly lit room, closed the doors and windows, and then Golurk opened the bag.
One by one, the fireflies flew out, their faint lights forming a sparkling galaxy in the darkness, illuminating the eager faces of the Pokemon.
They sure are beautiful!
"Agasi!"
When all the fireflies had flown into the room, Golurk let out a loud cry, then ran to the bedside and licked Naoki awake with its wet tongue.
- Although there were better ways to wake Naoki up, Golurk was just too excited at the moment and thus resorted to this more intimate method.
So, when Naoki opened his eyes from his slumber, he saw floating fireflies in the dark room, like a starry sky.
Naoki was dazed for a second before realizing that they weren't stars but fireflies!
"What's going on?" Naoki asked, his voice hoarse as he suspected he might have caught a cold, probably from not drying off properly after swimming in the sea earlier that day.
Golurk smiled, "Agasi~"
Naoki looked at the group of Pokemon gathered in the room and belatedly realized, "Was this your doing?"
"Ow!" Dragonite nodded vigorously.
The group of Pokemon looked at him expectantly, hoping he would like their surprise.
Although they couldn't communicate verbally, having lived together for so long, Naoki could understand their intentions from their expressions, tones, and body language.
Just like at that moment.
He looked up at the flickering lights in the room, realizing that this was their gift to him, and he felt touched.
"Thank you," Naoki smiled, "I really like it."
The Pokemon, who had been eagerly awaiting his reaction, immediately broke into happy smiles upon hearing his words.
"Agasi~"
"..."
Naoki checked the time and, realizing it was getting late, thought that the group of Pokemon must be hungry, so he prepared to get up and make dinner for them.
However, Golurk shook its head, "Balmo!"
It showed Naoki the bag of Berries and pointed to the bottles of milk on the table.
"You've already eaten?" Naoki asked, surprised.
The Pokemon nodded simultaneously.
Naoki's gaze swept across their faces, and he guessed that it must have been Golurk's idea.
"Are you still hungry?" Naoki got up to prepare his own dinner and asked casually if anyone hadn't eaten their fill, as he could make a few more servings.
But all the Pokemon shook their heads; after finishing that bag of Berries, they were all stuffed.
Naoki: "..." Looks like he'll have to buy a few more bags of Berries in town tomorrow.
Since Golurk and the others were already full, Naoki only needed to prepare dinner for himself tonight.
Naoki made himself a simple dinner of a fried egg and a bowl of noodles with scallions and sesame oil, topped with the fried egg.
After dinner, it was bedtime.
Golurk sat by the bed, looking eager.
Naoki had promised it earlier that day that it could sleep on the bed with him that night.
"Come on over!"
Naoki patted the spot next to him, and Golurk immediately scrambled up, lying down like a big Golden Retriever.
Motostlizard looked on enviously.
Seeing this, Naoki felt helpless but called it over to his other side.
"You guys go to sleep first, I'll watch some TV."
Naoki wasn't feeling sleepy, so he leaned against the pillow and started watching TV.
Golurk lay on his left, Motostlizard on his right, and Butubal curled up on his abdomen, leaving Naoki squeezed in the middle, unable to move.
In the dark room, only the sounds of the TV and the flickering light of the fireflies remained.
Naoki looked up at the fireflies for a while, then at the Pokemon beside him, and a smile appeared on his face.
