Chapter 163: Commissioned Mission (3k)
Chapter 163: Commissioned Mission (3k)
"Obito, you're late again," Kakashi scolded as he glared at the rushing figure of Obito Uchiha. "You should have woken up earlier instead of making everyone wait for you."
"I did wake up early, but I was late because an elderly lady asked me for directions on my way here," Obito defended himself.
"Your excuses never change," Kakashi sighed. Even back when they were in school together, Obito had always used this same reason.
"Because it's the truth!" Obito retorted, unconvinced.
"Kakashi, sometimes you need to trust your teammates. I believe Obito did help that elderly lady and isn't just making up an excuse for being late," Mu Yue chimed in with a smile.
"Are there really that many elderly people in need of help?" Kakashi remained skeptical.
"Are you saying that Obito's youth is spent helping old folks?" Might Guy furrowed his brows in deep thought.
"Why does doing a good deed sound so strange when you say it?" Obito couldn't help but retort. He had simply offered assistance to someone who needed it.
"Alright, now that we're all here, let's head to the Hokage's office to receive our mission," Mu Yue suggested.
Most matters concerning the village and ninja duties were handled at the Hokage's office.
"I wonder what kind of mission it will be. Will it be protecting our country's princess or defeating the leader of an enemy nation?" Obito gazed up at the towering Hokage building, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.
"You're dreaming too big," Kakashi ruthlessly shattered Obito's fantasy. "You're not even a full-fledged ninja yet. There's no way you'd be assigned a mission of that caliber."
"Gennin can only take on D-rank to C-rank missions. You interns are equivalent to Gennin at best, and the missions you mentioned are S-rank. Only Jonin are allowed to take on such extremely difficult tasks." Kakashi, having been a ninja for several years, was well-versed in Konoha's mission rules. Based on his assessment, he guessed that Obito and his team would likely be limited to D-rank missions at best.
"Then what are some D-rank missions like?" Obito asked, curious despite his disappointment.
"Catching cats and dogs, cleaning up trash, babysitting kids," Kakashi listed off casually.
"So, it's just doing odd jobs?" Obito was shocked. This was nothing like the exciting ninja life he had imagined.
Slap!
"You have to start with the basics when taking on missions," Mu Yue said as she lightly tapped Obito's forehead.
Mu Yue herself was curious about the mission, though her interest didn't lie in the task itself. The life of a ninja held no appeal to her; instead, she was more intrigued by the possibility of rewards her disciples might receive upon completing their assignment.
"Why aren't these two wearing forehead protectors?" the ninja in charge of mission registration asked, noticing that neither Obito nor Might Guy had their forehead protectors with them.
"Show them your intern credentials," Mu Yue instructed.
Intern ninja didn't receive forehead protectors but were given temporary identification as proof of their status.
"Ah, intern ninja. In that case, you can only take on D-rank missions. Choose one from this list," the registration ninja said as he unfurled a scroll and presented it to Mu Yue.
Hiruzen Sarutobi had already given advance notice that there would be a batch of intern ninja taking on missions soon, and they were to be treated as newly graduated Gennin.
Obito and Might Guy leaned in to take a look at the scroll.
"Finding a lost pet cat, babysitting a three-year-old child, cleaning up the training ground..." Obito realized that Kakashi hadn't been lying; these really were all odd jobs.
"Then let's take on the mission to find the lost pet cat," Mu Yue suggested after a quick glance.
Babysitting required a fixed amount of time, so that one was out. The rest were more or less on the same level.
"We get five thousand ryo just for finding a cat?" Might Guy's eyes widened in shock when he saw the reward for the cat-finding mission.
He remembered that without haggling, meat cost one hundred ryo per pound. Five thousand ryo could buy fifty pounds of meat!
"It's not five thousand ryo per person. That's the total reward," Mu Yue clarified to prevent any misunderstandings.
"That's still a lot even if we split it four ways," Might Guy said excitedly.
"Indeed. A bowl of ramen only costs sixty ryo, so finding a cat would get us enough for over twenty bowls of ramen," Obito agreed.
Although he felt a bit belittled by the menial nature of the task, the reward seemed reasonable to him.
Seeing the enthusiasm on Might Guy and Obito's faces, Mu Yue didn't want to burst their bubble just yet. Of course, there would be no equal split; the team leader would typically receive a larger share, and Konoha would also take a cut in taxes.
However, Mu Yue wasn't concerned about the money. She was willing to divide it evenly.
"Hey, Kakashi, why don't we have a contest to see who can complete the mission first?" Obito proposed.
"Yeah! A passionate youth should be full of challenges!" Might Guy enthusiastically approved.
"A pointless contest," Kakashi dismissed the idea with disinterest.
"Kakashi, are you afraid of losing to us interns? After all, it would be quite embarrassing for a Jonin to lose to an intern," Obito goaded.
Even though he knew this was a tactic to provoke him, hearing it from Obito made Kakashi feel irritated. He responded coldly, "I'm just worried about crushing a newbie like you."
"We'll see who crushes whom," Obito said, determined to prove himself.
"Alright then, let the first Cat-Finding Contest of the Mu Yue class begin!" Mu Yue announced with a cheerful smile.
"Let's get started! Whoever finds the cat first wins!" Might Guy shouted excitedly.
Kakashi glanced at Mu Yue, feeling a mix of emotions. This ninja school teacher seemed to have a very different style from any of the other instructors he had encountered before.
Seeing Kakashi's use of shadow clones, Deidara also created two shadow clones to look for the cat.
The three of them seemed highly motivated.
However, to Kakashi's surprise, in less than an hour, Deidara had found the cat described in the mission.
"Hehe, looks like I win!" Deidara proudly announced, holding a slightly chubby orange cat high in his hands.
"Meow!" Startled by being suddenly lifted, the orange cat scratched frantically at Deidara, causing him to instinctively let go.
But before the cat could hit the ground, a hand quickly grabbed its scruff, preventing it from moving.
"You're still half-baked." Kakashi shook his head at Deidara as he held the cat by its scruff.
"I still found it before you," Deidara retorted, unconvinced.
"Just a stroke of luck," Kakashi remarked, thinking that Deidara had simply gotten lucky and that it didn't prove anything.
"Very good, you completed the mission quickly. Let's take on another one," Mu Yue said, seeing the situation.
Then, she led her disciples to the Hokage's office to turn in the mission.
"You finished so quickly," the registration ninja said, a little surprised. Catching cats wasn't an easy task; not only was Konoha large and difficult to search, but the cats themselves were quick and agile, making them hard to catch.

"Fifty-something minutes for thirty Chakra points? That's quite a bit faster than a regular class," Mu Yue thought to herself as she looked at the rewards.
Her previous morning class had only earned her twenty Chakra points, and the larger classes yielded a little more, around forty points.
"We don't need to compress every mission into an hour. As long as we complete two D-rank missions in a morning, the Chakra yield will be the same as attending three small classes."
Mu Yue pondered further, "It's still not enough to completely replace classes, though. Even with the bonus for all three disciples, it's only fifteen points. And if the students only focus on missions and don't cultivate, it will affect their training and the various rewards associated with it."
Mu Yue reflected that mission rewards seemed to be just a bonus, at least with the current rate of rewards.
"Let's take on another mission to find a lost item," Mu Yue said, glancing at the mission scroll.
"Kakashi, you don't seem convinced. How about we have another contest to see who can find the lost item first?" Deidara challenged again.
"This time, you won't be so lucky," Kakashi readily agreed, confident that his experience would not let him lose to Deidara again.
"Everyone's so spirited," Might Guy said, his blood pumping as he prepared to search for the lost item with all his might.
"The Mu Yue class's lost item search contest begins now," Mu Yue announced with a smile.
Deidara, determined to keep winning against Kakashi, Kakashi, eager to turn the tables, and Might Guy, motivated by some unknown reason, all sprang into action, eager to be the first to complete the mission.
Kakashi once again employed the shadow clone tactic, creating even more clones this time. Each clone had very little chakra left and no combat capability, but they were more than enough for the task of searching.
Kakashi couldn't believe that he and his eleven shadow clones working separately could still lose to Deidara and his two clones. Surely, there was a limit to luck.
However, about an hour later, something unexpected happened.
"It's done. Sorry, Kakashi, but I won again," Deidara said, holding a box and a bag.
Kakashi, having dismissed his shadow clones: "...!"
"What's in the bag? I thought the lost item was just the box?" Might Guy asked curiously.
"They're handmade pastries. I ran into the old lady from this morning, and she insisted on giving them to me as a reward," Deidara scratched his head and laughed.
"They look delicious. Mu Yue-sensei, please share them with us," he said.
After everyone had enjoyed the pastries, they once again headed to the Hokage's office to turn in the mission.

[Disciple Obito Uchiha worked hard to complete the commissioned mission, gaining Chakra +8. With the teacher's guidance, an additional reward of Chakra +4 is granted.]
"The reward is even less this time. Is it because finding lost items is simpler than catching cats?" Mu Yue speculated.
So, Mu Yue took on another mission to catch a dog.
After Deidara and Might Guy had left, Mu Yue called out to Kakashi:
"Kakashi, do you still think Deidara's quick completion of the missions is due to luck? Come with me."
