Chapter 1629: A War Without Victors (Seventy-Nine)
Chapter 1629: A War Without Victors (Seventy-Nine)
Having just finished her morning exercise, Katherine stretched lazily, feeling more relaxed than she had in a long time.
Indeed, she ought to have set aside her work and taken a proper break long ago.
She couldn't help but envy Isabelle, who had Albert to plan out her future path early on.
Even running the Witch's Beauty Shop wouldn't require her to busy herself with work like Valerie and herself.
After a quick shower, Katherine, now dressed in a casual-long skirt, headed to the dining room for breakfast.
The house-elves had already prepared a vegetable salad, and the latest newspapers were placed prominently on the table.
Katherine took a few bites of the salad, curious, as she poked at it with her fork. It contained not only vegetables but also a mix of fruits, tomatoes, and sweet corn, and the dressing was unlike anything she had made at home. It tasted better.
"I'll ask her for the recipe later."
After a couple more bites, Katherine put down her cutlery and glanced towards the entrance of the dining room, picking up the latest newspaper.
She had expected the grand opening of the Witch's Beauty Shop to dominate the headlines, quickly making the shop known throughout the British wizarding community. However, the situation seemed to be veering off from their original plan.
"Things are certainly chaotic in Britain. How could something like a werewolf attack on the acting Minister of Magic happen?" Katherine furrowed her brows as she read the absurd headline.
"It's almost as if someone wants him dead, stirring up even more trouble in Britain. What on earth are they thinking?" Louise, still looking a bit sleepy, sat across from Katherine with a glass of green fruit and vegetable juice in hand.
"You look tired. Why don't you go back for a nap? I thought you went to bed quite late last night."
Valerie, also freshly showered and wearing a bathrobe, leaned in close to Louise's ear, whispering something that made a faint blush appear on Louise's cheeks before she giggled and sat between the two, changing the subject. "What were you two talking about?"
"Read it yourself."
Katherine passed the day's newspaper to Valerie.
"Oh, it's nothing out of the ordinary. The Ministry is full of political scheming, and it's the same in every country." Valerie wasn't too surprised by the absurdity unfolding in the British wizarding community.
"If you ask me, that Minister Kingsley deserved it. Knowing full well that Britain had just gone through a second wizarding war and that he had enemies lurking in the shadows, he chose to turn a blind eye instead of mediating. He must be incredibly bold."
"You've got them figured out."
Louise yawned and covered her mouth, deciding to head back for a nap after finishing her juice.
"Most people would try to fight back when their interests are severely harmed. It's only natural," Valerie said, looking confusedly at Louise. "And in this case, we're talking about a group of Dark Wizards. It's to be expected that they'd resort to more extreme measures, isn't it?"
"What are you three talking about over breakfast?" Katrina asked, rolling her eyes at the trio's choices for their morning meal. "Is this what you call breakfast?"
"What's wrong with it?"
"I think you should consider having what they're having instead."
"It does look rather nice."
Valerie eyed the food on Katrina's plate and then glanced at her own salad. She, too, decided to switch her breakfast.
"What were you discussing?" Katrina asked, glancing at the newspaper on the table.
"The British Minister of Magic being attacked by a werewolf," Louise said, glancing briefly at Katrina's hearty breakfast before looking away. She had little appetite at the moment.
"It's probably the work of pure-bloods supporting Voldemort. The two sides have been at a stalemate for a while," Katrina remarked, not entirely surprised. She had heard about this from Albert before.
"I'd wager that this is a result of not thoroughly dealing with the remnants of those idiots after our victory," Valerie said, pushing her untouched salad towards Katherine. She then went to the kitchen and asked the house-elves for the same breakfast Katrina was having.
"It's not as simple as that."
"It is that simple. Many people are just that foolish, and they'll learn their lesson once more of them die," Valerie said, not believing that Minister Kingsley would let this attack slide.
"If we're being cynical, who's to say that Kingsley guy wasn't waiting for this attack, using it as an excuse to settle scores with that group?"
"What about Isabelle?" Katherine asked, changing the subject.
"She's taking care of Alice, of course," Katrina replied.
"She's certainly keeping her daughter well-hidden. It's a shame we haven't had a chance to see her," Katherine said, sounding regretful.
"You're no better. We don't even know your child's name," Katrina pouted. "Are you really not going to let them meet?"
"I'll tell him when he's older. Not now," Katherine said, finishing her breakfast and eyeing Valerie's plate with curiosity. "Aren't you usually careful about your diet?"
"I think Albert's choice of breakfast is quite reasonable and tasty, although the portions are a bit small," Valerie said, enjoying her meal. It had been a long time since she had a proper breakfast.
"A balanced diet is important," Katrina commented. "The ingredients for the salad are oil, egg yolks, and white vinegar. Honestly, I don't see how this is healthy at all."
Katrina wouldn't have thought so in the past. However, the more she studied ways to enhance her beauty, the more she realized the importance of a healthy diet.
Many people gained weight not just due to a lack of exercise but also because the food they consumed was laden with oil and fat.
It would be a miracle if one didn't gain weight with such a high-fat diet.
"You seem to have done your research. Why didn't you include this in your book?" Valerie asked, puzzled, as she had studied Katrina's book thoroughly.
"Albert didn't want me to go into detail. He said that even if I did, it wouldn't be of much use because most wizards wouldn't be able to follow it, and the book is meant for the general public," Katrina explained, pouting slightly.
"He's right," Katherine agreed, finding his reasoning sound.
After finishing her fruit and vegetable juice, Louise suddenly asked, "Where's Albert?"
"He was called away early this morning for an emergency Wizengamot meeting."
"What's that?"
"It's a rather important meeting in the British wizarding community, and he's a member," Katrina explained, rolling her eyes. "In the past, some old fools thought he was too young and refused to let him join. But after he defeated Voldemort, no one dared to say that to his face."
"However, he doesn't seem to care much for those less important meetings and often skips them. But he's kept his seat, and this time, I believe he's going to support Minister Kingsley. He said it would save them a lot of trouble if the Minister was one of 'their own,'" Valerie added.
