Chapter 1628: A War Without Victors (Seventy-Eight)
Chapter 1628: A War Without Victors (Seventy-Eight)
Unlike the Aurors, who were on edge, Kingsley, as the victim of the attack, remained remarkably calm. At that moment, the acting minister was sipping coffee and recounting the details of the recent assault to a young man who had just sat down across from him.
"So, you want me to scry to locate the werewolf that attacked your home?" Albert understood why the man across from him had requested this meeting.
"Yes, it's gone missing."
"Missing?"
"Werewolves are not difficult to find at this time of the month, yet the Aurors scoured the area and couldn't find the other escaping werewolf. I find that peculiar," Kingsley pushed a letter towards Albert, "and this is your payment."
"You should be aware that even if we catch that werewolf, it's unlikely we'll get any useful information from it."
Albert didn't bother looking at the envelope in front of him. To be honest, being summoned by Kingsley at this hour to discuss such "trivial" matters put him in a rather foul mood.
Both men knew that this incident was most likely the work of the "pure-blood" witches and wizards who had supported Voldemort, and it was highly probable that it was directed specifically at Kingsley.
"I'm aware of that," Kingsley hesitated for a moment, "but I want to know if they intended to send me a warning or if they wanted me dead."
"Is there a difference? It doesn't seem to matter. In my opinion, it's just a casual move on their part." Albert put down his coffee cup and, after meeting the gaze of the man across from him, understood what he was worried about.
"There is a slight difference," Kingsley sighed and said seriously, "if this isn't an isolated incident, I might be in serious trouble."
"Are you worried that those people are secretly mass-producing werewolves? That does sound like something they would do." Albert's index finger tapped lightly on the table as he quickly considered the possibilities.
"If those pure-bloods are concerned that the hidden Death Eaters in the British wizarding community will be completely wiped out by you, they might resort to capturing Muggles and turning them into werewolves en masse to use as bargaining chips in negotiations with the Ministry."
As he spoke, Albert suddenly asked, "What will you do if it's confirmed that those pure-bloods are using Muggles to mass-produce werewolves to intimidate the Ministry?"
"What will I do?"
Kingsley frowned, admitting that while he had similar suspicions, he hadn't really thought about how to resolve the issue.
"Will you capture them all and have them executed?" Albert asked calmly, posing the most cruel question.
"Probably. To be honest, I never thought anyone would be so insane." Kingsley suddenly had a bad feeling, and he already knew what Albert's answer would be.
In fact, it wasn't that Kingsley couldn't guess; he just didn't want to accept it.
Things were already bad enough.
If the werewolf attack was perpetrated by werewolves mass-produced by Voldemort's followers, the situation would only get worse.
"I think you already have the answer you want." Albert stood up, ready to leave.
"Wait."
Kingsley quickly stopped Albert, "I need you to scry to locate that werewolf. I need to capture it and give everyone an explanation."
As he spoke, Kingsley pointed to the envelope on the table, "This is an easy task for you, and the reward will surely satisfy you."
Albert looked deeply into Kingsley's eyes, bent down to pick up the letter from the table, and opened it in front of him. Instead of Galleons, it contained a piece of parchment.
Albert unfolded the parchment, glanced at its contents, then looked at Kingsley before putting it back into the envelope and sealing it. He then summoned a crystal ball to help Kingsley scry for the missing werewolf.
After watching the scene that appeared in the crystal ball, Kingsley sat in silence for a long time before handing the memory-infused crystal ball to the Head of the Auror Office.
"We've locked down the approximate location. Although there's probably no danger, we can't rule out the possibility of an ambush. Tell the Auror squad to be careful, especially the new recruits who have just joined the Auror Office."
With that, Kingsley left with his guard, returning to the Ministry and leaving two Aurors behind to finish up.
"Is that really a good idea? You should know his personality; he won't be fooled by political rhetoric."
After Gawain Robards left with the message, Percy, seeing Kingsley deep in thought, voiced his own doubts.
He didn't think Kingsley would make such a foolish mistake.
"We really need a capable helper, or we might be crushed by the mess we're in." Kingsley glanced at Percy and spoke frankly, "Neither of us is power-hungry, and I think it's worth it to pay a small price."
"If that's the case, that would be great."
Percy was well aware that he was just a messenger, but he really hoped Kingsley wouldn't try to fool Albert with political talk. That would come at a cost, and he trusted Kingsley understood that.
On the other side, Gawain Robards, who had just returned to the Auror Office, immediately summoned the fully armed Aurors who were on standby at the Ministry to an emergency meeting. Soon after, a large group of Aurors flew out on their brooms and entered an unfamiliar forest, searching for the traces that Gawain had mentioned.
Yes, the escaping werewolf was no longer near Kingsley's home; it had completely disappeared, which was the main reason Kingsley had sought Albert's help.
The reality was even crueler than they had imagined.
The werewolf was already dead, most likely killed by a powerful piece of Dark Magic, and even its corpse had been destroyed by magical fire.
When Gawain Robards and the Aurors arrived, they could only find traces of where it had been concealed. They eventually used magic to briefly restore part of the scene.
Anyone who wasn't a fool realized the severity of the problem.
If it weren't for Albert's scrying, they probably never would have found the other werewolf.
"What now?" Derrick looked anxiously at his superior, "The journalists will be hard to deal with."
"This is a Death Eater plot; they tried to assassinate the minister." Gawain Robards immediately characterized the incident. As for whether to reveal that the Death Eaters were attempting to create werewolves, he would have to discuss it with Kingsley first.
That night, the Ministry hastily convened a press conference to reveal the plot of the remaining Death Eaters who had attempted to assassinate Kingsley.
No one blamed Kingsley for using Dark Magic to kill the werewolf, and his reputation actually increased as a result.
Soon after, it was announced that the Wizengamot intended to hold an emergency meeting to discuss whether Kingsley should be appointed as the new minister ahead of schedule, in order to give him more power to deal with the remaining Death Eaters who were stirring up trouble and to maintain the security of the British wizarding community.
