Chapter 1621: A War Without Victors (Seventy-One)
Chapter 1621: A War Without Victors (Seventy-One)
Whether it was due to the thick curtains covering the windows of the ballroom or the passionate dancing, Albert could feel the rapid breath and flushed cheeks of the young lady in front of him, her youthful allure palpable.
As a slow song ended, Albert gently wrapped his arms around Louise's waist, leaning in to kiss her slightly panting, rosy lips.
The surrounding ladies giggled like silver bells and gathered around the embracing couple, offering their blessings.
After a long while, the couple reluctantly parted, only to be pushed back onto the dance floor by the other girls.
The ball was not over yet, and many ladies were still waiting for their turn to dance with Albert. They wouldn't allow him to do anything that would deprive them of this rare opportunity.
"Here," Isabelle said, handing him a glass of juice mixed with alcohol. "You can't let Louise captivate you entirely. The other ladies are waiting for their dance with you."
"If Catherine had been more sincere during our trip to America, I might have taken the bait myself. But now, I think it's too late." Albert took a sip from the glass, a self-deprecating smile on his face. The drink was quite tasty—sweet with a hint of alcohol, yet surprisingly harmonious.
Unfortunately, he didn't have the chance to savor it and had to down the rest of the drink in a hurry as a new dance partner pulled him back onto the dance floor.
This time, only Valerie remained on the dance floor with him.
The other girls sat on the nearby sofas, whispering to each other, their eyes fixed on the dancing couple.
To Albert's relief, Valerie didn't choose a passionate tango but instead placed his hand on her waist and slowly spun in circles with him.
However, compared to the seemingly shy Louise, Valerie was a bit more daring. She seemed to intentionally increase their physical contact, skillfully teasing Albert like a seasoned seductress.
"We can always find other ways to enjoy ourselves," Valerie murmured, pulling Albert closer and resting most of her weight on him. She breathed into his ear, her voice sultry. "Although I'd prefer to have you all to myself, if you wish, Catherine and I could join you together. It would be a pleasure you won't experience with the McDougal sisters."
As she spoke, she kissed Albert deeply, skillfully using her kissing techniques to make his heart race.
Once again, the girls rushed onto the dance floor to offer their blessings to the couple.
However, Catherine didn't give Albert a moment's rest and immediately pulled him back onto the dance floor after he had barely taken a sip of water.
The usually elegant and calm Catherine now led Albert in a passionate tango, her graceful and captivating body moving with fluidity and allure, devoid of any maidenly reserve or shyness.
She was nothing like the Catherine he knew.
Albert suspected that Catherine was doing this on purpose. He felt his energy being drained significantly, and his mind grew hazy as he became completely immersed in the fiery dance. It was only when the other girls pulled them off the dance floor that Albert noticed Catherine's triumphant smile.
Catherine's behavior soon drew criticism from the other ladies.
They didn't want anyone breaking the rules, and no one wanted to be at a disadvantage. Moreover, Albert's stamina had its limits, and Catherine had just led him in a vigorous tango for over fifteen minutes.
"I'm just looking out for you all," Catherine said nonchalantly as she lounged on the sofa, sipping the drink Valerie had brought her. She didn't seem the least bit embarrassed.
The intense tango had tired her out as well.
"Albert's stamina is impressive. I'm jealous of Isabelle," Catherine said with a slight curve of her lips, looking rather pleased with herself.
"But I think he's reaching his limit now."
"You..." Valerie couldn't help but laugh at Catherine's antics.
"What can I say? It's not my fault," Catherine said with a hint of helplessness. "He just doesn't seem interested in other unfamiliar ladies."
Whether it was due to caution or some other reason, Albert didn't seem as easily swayed by beautiful women as most men.
What made the three ladies even more frustrated was that they were considered "unfamiliar" to Albert, making it difficult to spark his interest.
This was a significant blow to Catherine, Valerie, and Louise, who were already Albert's lovers.
With their talents, wealth, and beauty, they could have their pick of men lining up down the street. Yet, here they were, chasing after Albert and facing rejection.
Catherine could guess the underlying reason for this.
Albert was a rather monogamous man, and he had been surrounded by beautiful women for years, so the allure of a pretty face didn't hold much appeal compared to the renowned Isabelle and her sister.
Moreover, he had been engaged in a battle of wits with the infamous Dark Lord, and even though Voldemort had perished at his hands not long ago, Albert remained highly vigilant of those around him.
Most importantly, Albert had been well-satisfied by Isabelle, and a satisfied man was less likely to stray or develop romantic inclinations toward other women.
What frustrated the trio the most was the knowledge that if it weren't for Isabelle setting the precedent with her sister, they wouldn't be in this situation at all.
This was why Catherine had persuaded Louise to bring the specially brewed fruit wine from the Veela.
They had to slowly peel away Albert's psychological defenses and, at the very least, make him less averse to the idea of having them as his lovers. Otherwise, their trip here would be a huge loss.
After all, it was just a promise.
To sacrifice themselves and, in the end, only receive a vague commitment was not an outcome the girls could accept.
Every girl yearned for love and dreamed of having their own Prince Charming.
Even if that Prince Charming belonged to someone else, they still wanted to share him with Isabelle.
With that promise, they had gained the right to do so.
But it wasn't going to be easy, as it didn't guarantee they would win him over.
As Louise handed Albert a glass of juice and some chocolate, Valerie leaned over and whispered, "Do you think Louise will succeed?"
"Of course," Catherine replied, her eyes fixed on Louise. "Look at how well she's doing. The pure-hearted Veela has been waiting patiently, and she will succeed."
"I'm just worried that she's not bold enough," Valerie mumbled.
"Louise knows how to attract a man far better than you," Catherine said softly. "Don't forget the Veela's specialty, even if she's only a half-blood."
"Moreover, Louise wants to find her own love. She won't tolerate failure."
"I hope things go smoothly. I don't want us to come to England next time only to be treated as strangers with the title of 'lover,'" Valerie said, well aware that Isabelle wouldn't always create opportunities for them.
