Chapter 161: Unforeseen Events in Charms Class
Chapter 161: Unforeseen Events in Charms Class
As Kyle watched Connor walk into the Charms classroom, he was stunned. He never expected that Connor would take his previous words to heart.
This was a Felix Felicis potion! If it had been the Weasley twins, they probably wouldn't have cared even if it weren't a joke. Even if they truly turned into Crups, they likely wouldn't have minded.
Kyle wanted to say something more, but Connor had already taken a seat inside the classroom and was chatting with her roommates.
Seeing this, Kyle could only put away the Felix Felicis for now and followed her into the room.
Today's lesson was on the Engorgio Charm, a practical household spell that Hagrid often used.
The pumpkins in his garden were enlarged by this very charm.
What's fascinating is that while magic cannot create food out of thin air, it can increase the size of existing food without altering its taste.
However, for some reason, not many people are keen on eating food that has been enlarged by magic.
Hagrid's pumpkins usually end up as Halloween decorations.
"Remember, your hand movements are crucial," Professor Flitwick said seriously as he stood at the front of the class. "Keep your arm steady and use your wrist to draw a circle downward... and, most importantly, don't mispronounce the incantation..."
Although Engorgio is a spell taught in the second year and isn't particularly difficult, it's much simpler than the Levitation Charm.
Kyle gently swished his wand, focusing on the button on the desk in front of him.
"Engorgio!"
In an instant, the button began to swell rapidly, like an inflating balloon, quickly growing to the size of a plate.
"Oh, well done!" Professor Flitwick applauded. "Everyone, look! We have our first success! Five points to Hufflepuff!"
While Kyle executed the charm effortlessly, others weren't faring as well.
Mikey and Ryan tried to emulate Kyle's movements, swirling their wrists again and again, but the button they were aiming for remained stubbornly still.
In a fit of frustration, Mikey poked at it with his wand... and the button went flying, grazing Professor Flitwick's hair before slamming into the wall.
Over on the Gryffindor side, a similar situation was unfolding.
"Engorgio! Engorgio!" shouted a young Gryffindor wizard, his arms flailing like a windmill as he completely forgot the professor's instructions.
The button didn't budge, but his wild gestures caused him to accidentally poke Katy Bell with his wand.
"Merlin's beard..." Professor Flitwick murmured, as if anticipating what was about to happen, and covered his face with his hand.
The next second, Katy Bell inflated like a balloon and slowly floated up to the ceiling.
She looked terrified, frantically waving her arms and letting out a piercing scream.
"Don't panic, Miss Bell. Stay calm," Professor Flitwick said as he quickly rushed over to her. Soon, he had reversed the effect, and the shaken Katy Bell was sent to the hospital wing to recover.
Such incidents were commonplace in Charms class, and Professor Flitwick was well-versed in handling them.
"Mr. MacLaggen, your arm movements are too large," Professor Flitwick said angrily. "That is extremely dangerous. Ten points from Gryffindor!"
After the Charms lesson, Kyle had intended to look for Connor, but she had already left.
Moreover, she never brought up the topic again, as if the Felix Felicis were a bottle of pumpkin juice instead of a precious potion.
"That's incredible," Harry said to Ron as they sat at the table, munching on toasted bread. "I wonder how he did it..."
"Never mind that now," Ron said, clearly uninterested in the topic. His eyes lit up as he turned to Harry. "You're really going to be a Seeker? Professor McGonagall said yes?"
"She did," Harry confirmed. "And she introduced me to a fifth-year student named Wood, who's going to train me."
"Oliver Wood?" Ron asked.
Harry nodded.
"He's the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. This is unbelievable, you're only in your first year!"
Ron took a bite of his pie, "Harry, you must be the youngest House player in ages."
"In a century, actually," Harry added, taking a pie for himself. "That's what Wood told me."
"A century..." Ron sat there, staring at Harry in awe.
"I start training tomorrow," Harry said. "And keep it under your hat, Wood wants to keep it quiet for now."
Just then, Fred and George walked into the Great Hall and made a beeline for Harry.
"Well done," George said in a low voice. "Wood told us you're the new Seeker. We're on the House team too, as Beaters."
"We're going to win the House Cup this year, you'll see," Fred said excitedly. "You should've seen the looks on Cedric and Kyle's faces when they heard the news. Priceless."
"They're on the Hufflepuff team," George added. "They were pretty confident that Gryffindor didn't stand a chance before this. A couple of smug bookworms."
"Is Kyle into Quidditch?" Harry asked, surprised. He had always assumed that someone as studious as Kyle would only be interested in academics, like Hermione.
"Not officially yet," Fred said. "But he's got final tryouts tomorrow. If he makes it, he'll be on the team."
"You should go and watch, get a feel for your competition..."
"Can I?" Harry's eyes lit up. "I mean, isn't that a Hufflepuff-only thing?"
Anything related to Quidditch piqued his interest, and he was eager to see how others played the game.
"Go right ahead," Fred smiled. "You definitely can't do that with Slytherin, but Hufflepuff won't mind."
"We've got to go. Lee Jordan thinks he's found a new secret passage that leads outside the school."
"Probably the one behind the boot-licking Gregory statue, which we found on our first day here."
"Good luck, see you."
"See you!" Harry waved at them and turned back to Ron. "I'm going to check it out tomorrow, want to come?"
"Sure," Ron thought about it. "Though this might dampen your spirits, but I've seen Kyle and Fred play Quidditch, and he's really good."
"Oh yeah?"
Harry's curiosity was piqued, and he couldn't wait for tomorrow to come.
