Chapter 161: Charms Class Never Lacks Surprises
Chapter 161: Charms Class Never Lacks Surprises
As Conna turned and walked into the Charm Classroom, Kyle was stunned. He never imagined that Conna would take his previous words seriously.
This was the Elixir of Fortuna! If it were the Weasley brothers, they wouldn't care even if it were a joke, let alone if they actually turned into tail-wagging dogs.
Kyle wanted to say something, but Conna had already taken her seat and was talking to her roommate.
Seeing this, Kyle could only put away the Elixir of Fortuna for now and follow her into the classroom.
This lesson was about the Expansion Charm, a very practical household charm that Hagrid often used.
The pumpkins in his garden grew so large because of the Expansion Charm.
This was the most magical part; magic couldn't create food out of thin air, but it could make existing food bigger, and the taste wouldn't be any different.
But for some reason, few people would eat food that had been enlarged by the Expansion Charm.
Hagrid's pumpkins ended up as Halloween decorations.
"Hand gestures are important..."
Professor Flitwick stood at the front, speaking earnestly, "Remember what I just said, keep your arm steady, use your wrist, and draw a circle downward... Also, be sure not to mispronounce the charm..."
Although the Expansion Charm was something second-years would learn, it wasn't difficult, at least much simpler than the Levitation Charm.
Kyle looked at the button on the desk in front of him and gave his wand a slight twist.
"Enlarge quickly!"
The button began to swell rapidly, like an inflated balloon, and soon it was about the size of a plate.
"Oh, well done!" Professor Flitwick clapped his hands and shouted, "Look, someone has succeeded already! Hufflepuff, plus five points!"
It was easy for Kyle, but it was a different story for the others.
Mikael and Ryan imitated Kyle's previous movements, twisting their wrists again and again, but the button that should have enlarged remained motionless on the desk.
In frustration, Mikael poked it with his wand... The button exploded with a bang and flew, grazing Professor Flitwick's hair and hitting the wall.
Across the room, the situation in Gryffindor was similar.
"Enlarge quickly... Enlarge quickly!" shouted a young Gryffindor wizard, completely forgetting what Professor Flitwick had just said, and waving his arms like a windmill.
The button didn't move, but because his movements were too big, he accidentally poked Katie Bell with his wand.
"Merlin's beard..." Professor Flitwick seemed to anticipate something and covered his face with his hand.
The next second, Katie Bell puffed up into a ball and slowly floated up to the ceiling.
She looked terrified, frantically waving her arms and emitting a shrill scream.
"Don't panic, Miss Bell, don't panic."
Professor Flitwick hurried over and quickly restored her, and then had someone send the shaken Katie Bell to the Hospital Wing.
He had seen many such accidents in Charms class and was adept at handling them.
"Mr. McLaggen, your arm movements are too big; this is very dangerous."
Professor Flitwick said angrily, "Gryffindor, minus ten points!"
After Charms class, Kyle had wanted to look for Conna, but she had already left ahead of him.
And after that, she never mentioned this matter again, as if it were not the precious Elixir of Fortuna but just a common bottle of pumpkin juice.
...
Hogwarts never had any secrets.
Gryffindor's McLaggen's act of blowing up his classmates like balloons became known the very next day.
"This is unbelievable," Harry said, munching on toast at the table and turning to Ron beside him. "I wonder how he did it..."
"Let's not talk about that now," Ron said, clearly not in the mood to discuss it. He looked at Harry with eagerness. "Is it true what you said earlier? Did Professor McGonagall really make you a Seeker?"
"That's what Professor McGonagall said," Harry replied. "And she took me to meet a fifth-year student named Wood, who's going to train me."
"Oliver Wood?" Ron asked.
Harry nodded.
"He's the Gryffindor Quidditch captain. It's incredible, and you're only in your first year!"
Ron, who had been holding a piece of pie, finally took a bite and said, "Harry, you must be the youngest House team player in ages."
"It's been a century," Harry added, taking a piece of pie as well. "That's what Wood told me."
"A century..." Ron sat there, staring at Harry in disbelief.
"I start training tomorrow," Harry said. "Don't tell anyone, Wood wants to keep it a secret."
Just then, Fred and George entered the Great Hall. As soon as they spotted Harry, they quickly made their way over.
"Well done," George said softly. "Wood told us, and we're on the House team too, as Beaters."
"Let me tell you, we're definitely taking the House Cup this year." Fred exclaimed, "You won't believe how surprised Cedric and Kyle were when they heard about this."
"They're on the Hufflepuff team," George explained. "Before this, they thought Gryffindor was a sure loss. Two silly straight-A students..."
"Is Kyle playing Quidditch?" Harry asked, surprised. He had always assumed that an outstanding student like Kyle would only be interested in studying.
"Not yet," Fred said. "But he's having his final tryout tomorrow, and if he makes it, he's on the team."
"I think you should go and check it out, get a head start on scouting the competition..."
"Can I?" Harry's eyes lit up. "I mean, isn't that Hufflepuff's tryout?"
He was now interested in everything related to Quidditch, and the opportunity to see how others played in advance was too good to pass up.
"Go ahead," Fred laughed. "Slytherin would never allow it, but Hufflepuff won't mind."
"We have to go. Lee Jordan thinks he's found a new secret passage that leads outside the school."
"I bet it's the passage behind the Sycophant Gregory statue. We found it on our first day here."
"Good luck, see you later."
"See you!" Harry waved at them and turned to Ron. "I'm going to check it out tomorrow, want to come with me?"
"Sure, why not?" Ron thought for a moment. "I know this might dampen your spirits, but I've seen Kyle play with Fred and the others, and he's really good."
"Oh..."
Hearing this, Harry became even more curious, like a cat itching to pounce, wishing it were already tomorrow.
