Chapter 1606: A War Without Victors (Fifty-Six)
Chapter 1606: A War Without Victors (Fifty-Six)
"Tell me your reasons," Albert sighed.
He knew Isabelle too well, and there must have been a compelling cause for her to take such liberties.
While he understood that he wouldn't be at a disadvantage either way, Isabelle's decision-making on his behalf still caught him somewhat off-guard.
"The beauty potion business is even more lucrative than you imagined, and Catherine and the others want an even stronger bond to secure their interests," Katrina rarely saw Albert at a loss for words and was delighted by his rare flustered state, feeling that Isabelle truly knew her husband well.
"Being lovers isn't exactly a dependable relationship," Albert retorted in a huff.
"They all want to bear your children," Isabelle stated calmly, delivering a bombshell that left Albert speechless.
"Whose bright idea was that?"
Albert's expression was priceless.
In his two lifetimes, he had never imagined that he would experience the so-called "tall, rich, and handsome" treatment.
"Catherine's," Isabelle replied with a mischievous smile.
"She said that eventually, it will be your children who inherit everything, and there is no bond more solid than family and blood ties. Moreover, they don't expect you to take responsibility for the children," Katrina added.
"You should know that they just want to get more out of me," Albert sighed, turning to Isabelle. "Do you want more, too?"
"I believe they will become your lovers regardless, and since it's unavoidable, I have no reason to stop them," Isabelle said without an ounce of guilt, speaking as if she were merely stating a fact. "Moreover, I think it will be beneficial for everyone involved. If it's a win-win situation, there's no reason to refuse."
This was one of the primary reasons Isabelle had agreed to Catherine's proposal.
"A win-win situation?"
Albert really didn't want to discuss the so-called win-win scenario any further, as it was challenging his values.
"They're betting big on you," Katrina chimed in, stealing a glance at Albert as she shared her thoughts.
"Although I'm reluctant to admit it, it's highly unlikely that we could create an even better beauty potion without relying on our combined efforts. However, they see everything they want in you, so…"
"So, they naturally want more," Albert finished, having expected as much and thus remaining calm.
In truth, Albert wasn't unwilling to help, but even with his continued investment of experience, it would be challenging to make any groundbreaking progress or achieve a significant breakthrough.
Others, however, didn't see it that way. Albert's reputation as a genius was already well-established.
From their perspective, it seemed that Albert was being lazy.
Even Isabelle likely shared similar thoughts. After all, if he were willing to devote more time, he could undoubtedly produce an even superior product, which would mean eternal youth and immense wealth.
This was the backlash of his previous actions.
After dinner, Albert sat on the swing in the courtyard, enjoying the post-meal cuddle session with his cat.
To be honest, he was still a bit concerned about Isabelle's actions, as she didn't seem to care much about those so-called benefits. There had to be another reason for her behavior.
But what could it be? Albert couldn't fathom it at the moment, and he was too lazy to waste brain cells thinking about it. He trusted that Isabelle would explain herself, as that was their unspoken agreement as a couple.
"You're angry," Isabelle said as she picked up the chubby cat and sat down next to Albert.
"No," he replied.
"Are you curious about why I agreed so readily?" she asked.
"A little," Albert admitted, listening quietly.
"If something can't be changed, then we can only try to accept it," Isabelle said as she gently stroked Tom's head.
"Is Alice asleep?"
"No, Katrina is learning how to take care of the baby," Isabelle smiled. "She'll sleep with us tonight."
In fact, the three of them had been sharing a bed for a long time.
"Do you have anything else planned for tomorrow?"
It was understandable if he couldn't get up the next day after a busy night.
"From now on, you need to conserve your energy and prepare to deal with those eager young ladies," Isabelle kissed Albert's cheek playfully, seemingly delighted by the idea of him having more lovers.
"So, what do you want to do?" Albert asked again.
"They've already agreed to sign an unbreakable vow, pledging to be your lovers only," Isabelle replied, her mood seemingly elated.
"Do you… hate them that much?"
Albert gave his wife a strange look.
"Everything has a price. They've already gained a lot of what they wanted, and pledging their loyalty is a small price to pay," Isabelle said matter-of-factly. "Besides, you wouldn't want your lovers to be involved with other men, would you?"
"So, you plan to have Granger sign this contract, too?" Albert gained a new understanding of his wife. While it seemed like she was doing this for his benefit, it could also be seen as a form of revenge against the women who had designs on her husband.
"Miss Granger's lack of courage to face me is a bit surprising," Isabelle chuckled. "But she can't hide forever. Since she voluntarily chose to be your lover, she must bear the responsibilities that come with it."
"What about Katrina?" Albert asked suddenly.
"Of course, she has signed it, too," Isabelle said as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "However, it doesn't really affect her since Katrina will continue living with us in the future."
Albert suddenly understood why Isabelle didn't seem too fond of Hermione.
It was because Hermione was also in Britain! Unlike the other women who lived and worked in different countries and rarely had the chance to see him, Hermione was right there.
The most terrifying part was that after they had tasted the sweetness of love and been thoroughly satisfied, they would only crave more affection. And once they left Britain, the void of unfulfilled desires would become a torturous emptiness, and they wouldn't even have the power of choice.
"This isn't a good idea," Albert said softly.
"It is a good idea," Isabelle asserted firmly.
"Women are not known for their rationality, and who knows what they might do," Albert had a foreboding feeling that he would eventually be the one cleaning up the mess.
"That's a problem for the future," Isabelle said, unconcerned about a group of emotionally detached older women. She snuggled closer to Albert and said, "It's time to rest."
"By the way, Katrina seems to want a child, too," Albert said.
"I thought we agreed to wait until after we've traveled the world…" Albert was a bit confused, as they had planned this beforehand.
"She was probably stimulated and felt a sense of crisis," Isabelle said, seemingly unable to understand her sister's thoughts. "And having a child while she's still young won't affect her body too much."
