Chapter 160: Felix Felicis and the Swallowtail Hound
Chapter 160: Felix Felicis and the Swallowtail Hound
"What is this...?"
Cedric approached, intrigued by Kyle's trance-like state as he held a thumb-sized vial.
"Odd, why isn't there a label on it?" Cedric furrowed his brows in confusion. "Could it be that someone from St. Mungo's accidentally put it in the wrong box?"
"With your eyesight, how are you even a Seeker? You should retire now to avoid embarrassment later," Kyle teased, extending his hand and pointing to the vial. "Look carefully; the label is right here... Hmm?"
Before Kyle could finish his sentence, he froze.
The words that had been written on the vial were now mysteriously absent, leaving no trace of their existence.
"There's nothing there... You must have imagined it," Cedric replied after inspecting the vial closely once more.
"That's right, the final Quidditch selection is just around the corner. You should refrain from your nightly excursions to avoid being drowsy and throwing the Quaffle off-target again," Cedric teased, turning to chat with George about other matters.
"Strange..." Kyle muttered, examining the vial in his hand.
He was certain that when he first laid eyes on the vial, it bore the words "Veritaserum" inscribed in golden cursive letters. Yet, in the blink of an eye, the words had vanished without a trace.
"It can't be that my eyes are playing tricks on me... Oh well, I'll examine it more thoroughly later."
Shaking his head, Kyle pocketed the vial and continued rummaging through the box of potions.
Compared to the Veritaserum, the remaining potions were far more ordinary, albeit expensive. Nonetheless, they could be easily found in most stores.
Soon, only one potion was left untouched in the box.
Nestled in the farthest corner, this vial was even smaller than the one containing Veritaserum.
As Kyle carefully extracted it, a collective gasp filled the room.
"No way..."
Cedric's eyes widened in disbelief. "Is that Felix Felicis?!"
The golden liquid inside the vial shimmered with Kyle's movements.
Cedric's eyes followed the liquid's gentle undulations.
"What? Felix Felicis?!" Fred and George exclaimed, drawing closer with curiosity. "Is this the legendary luck potion?"
"I believe so," Cedric affirmed with a nod, his tone serious. "Although I'm seeing the real Felix Felicis for the first time, I've read about it in books, and it looks exactly like this. See, there's even a label here."
He pointed to the minuscule label near the vial's opening, barely larger than a grain of rice.
"It really is Felix Felicis!" Fred exclaimed, smacking his lips.
Like Cedric, this was his first encounter with the actual luck potion. Prior to this, he had only heard about it in stories, considering it a mythical substance akin to an ancient wand.
The three boys stared at the Felix Felicis in Kyle's hand, reluctant to blink, until there were just five minutes left before class started. Only then did they reluctantly tear themselves away.
Even Conner took a curious glance, but the more she stared at the tiny vial, the more it seemed familiar...
"Still haven't remembered? Surely you haven't forgotten already.
'Christmas... that's right, I remember!'
Conner paused in her tracks, her eyes widening in realization. 'I recall Professor Snape giving me a potion like this back then. So it really was Felix Felicis.'
'Not a cold remedy?' Kyle drawled beside her.
Conner seemed to catch his implication, her face reddening as she turned away, offering a quiet explanation.
Back then, she hadn't known about the connection between Professor Snape and the Prince family, so it was understandable that she hadn't believed him.
After all, which professor would give their student Felix Felicis as a gift? The idea was a bit far-fetched.
'Now you must believe me,' Kyle said with a smile.
Conner was about to nod when she suddenly seemed to realize something. She looked up, her expression turning sour as she met Kyle's gaze. 'Wait, you didn't know about Professor Snape and me back then, did you? You've been laughing at me ever since?'
'You're overthinking it. That's not it at all,' Kyle shook his head. 'I only found out a few days before the break.'
Conner wrinkled her nose and asked, 'Then how could you be so sure that the potion he gave me was Felix Felicis?'
Kyle replied nonchalantly, 'Because that's what Felix Felicis looks like.'
'Is that it?'
'Of course...' Kyle smiled. 'But it also has to do with the professor's personality. Professor Snape wouldn't play such a prank.'
The professors at Hogwarts had very different personalities. If the gift had come from Professor Flitwick, for instance, it might well have been a cold remedy.
He had done something similar before.
Chris had mentioned in passing that Professor Flitwick had once given all the students staying at school for the Christmas holidays a Ravenclaw coronet.
But the students soon discovered that it was actually chocolate, shaped like a coronet by Professor Flitwick's magic.
'I see...' Conner nodded thoughtfully.
Upon further reflection, she realized that Professor Snape indeed wouldn't do something so superfluous.
'By the way, here, take this back.'
As they neared the Charms classroom, Kyle suddenly pulled out a small bottle from his pocket and handed it to Conner.
It was the Felix Felicis that Snape had given her.
He hadn't dared to keep it anywhere else and had carried it with him at all times.
Conner glanced at Kyle but didn't take it.
'You're really giving it back to me?'
'What are you talking about...?' Kyle laughed. 'This has always been yours.'
He had only kept it safe for her before because she had been losing things constantly, and it wouldn't have been secure with her.
Now that the thieving 'rat' was gone, there was no need to worry anymore.
Conner still didn't move.
'What are you waiting for? Take it; class is about to start,' Kyle urged, seeing her inaction.
'No...'
'What?' Kyle froze, thinking he had misheard.
This was Felix Felicis they were talking about...
'I said, I don't want it,' Conner stated, a smile spreading across her face. She stood at the entrance of the Charms classroom, her hands folded behind her back. 'Since you gave it to me, it's now yours. I don't want to be a swallowtail hound...'
