Chapter 16: My House is Pretty Big
At 1:30 in the afternoon, Xueheng arrived at school.
Just like in the morning, he didn't go directly to his classroom but instead entered Qing University's campus once more, making his way to the university library.
Unlike the sparse crowd in the morning, the library was now bustling with students. However, everyone remained quiet, and the only audible sounds were the soft rustling of pages being turned.
Xueheng's arrival caught the attention of many students. A short-haired girl sitting in the lounge area, holding a leisure book, had eyes that sparkled as she gazed at Xueheng, who was dressed in the affiliated high school uniform. She excitedly whispered to her best friend beside her:
"Look, look! That little brother is so handsome!"
"Should we go and ask for his WeChat?"
Her friend, who was staring at Xueheng, scoffed, "Aren't you into older guys? Why are you drooling over this little cutie from the affiliated school now?"
"Even if I don't have a sweet tooth, I'd still drool over such a top-tier dessert!" The short-haired girl exclaimed, her eyes gleaming.
"Come on, let's go. I'll ask for his WeChat, and you can stand by and cheer me on..."
As she spoke, she stood up from her chair, creating a slight, sharp sound as the chair scraped against the floor.
Seemingly having heard the commotion, Xueheng turned his head and glanced in the direction of the short-haired girl.
"..."
The girl, feeling as though she had been drenched by a bucket of cold water from head to toe, instantly lost all her desire as she met his cold gaze.
It wasn't until Xueheng walked upstairs and out of her sight that the short-haired girl suddenly covered her ample bosom and breathed heavily, like a drowning person who had just been rescued.
Her friend was stunned for a moment, then immediately patted her back to help her catch her breath, concerned, "What's wrong, Xiaolin? Are you okay?"
The girl with a single ponytail, named Xiaolin, said with lingering fear, "I don't know why, but that little brother... seems dangerous. I think I'll pass on asking for his WeChat."
...
Unaware of the psychological impact his casual glance had on others, Xueheng made his way up to the seventh floor.
The seventh floor was as quiet as ever, a stark contrast to the bustling first six floors. Only a girl sat there, in an old chair, holding a book. She sat with perfect posture, her waist-length ponytail swaying slightly, and a clean, beautiful face with a hint of a smile. She was the same girl Xueheng had met in the same spot that morning.
Unlike before, the girl nodded at Xueheng, and he returned the nod with a smile.
He found this unspoken, nodding acquaintance rather interesting.
Walking into the bookshelf area, Xueheng began searching for any clues related to 'divine substances.'
Under the dim yellow light, Xueheng and the girl went about their separate tasks, clearly distinct from each other like strangers. Yet, there was also an inexplicable sense of harmony between them.
An hour later, Xueheng had learned a lot of things that ordinary people didn't know, but he still had no leads on divine substances.
"I should probably go to class now."
Shaking his head, Xueheng put the book back on the shelf and left the library.
The quiet seventh floor now held only the girl, like a lonely bound spirit imprisoned there. Only the occasional sound of turning pages proved her existence.
...
When Xueheng entered his classroom, he found that the desk and chair vandalized by Pei Youguang had been replaced with a new set.
"It was that second-year, Pei Youguang, who brought them over. He changed your desk and chair."
"It seems that Pei Youguang came by earlier and replaced them." A classmate who had arrived early explained.
"I see," Xuejing replied nonchalantly. The desk and chair were still usable despite the vandalism, but it was probably for the best that they were replaced since the drawers had been stuffed with dirty things.
"Pei Youguang is quite considerate," Xuejing thought. It seemed that his heartfelt lecture had gotten through to the younger student.
The afternoon classes flew by, and after bidding farewell to Li Gao, Xuejing mentioned that he had some matters to attend to and asked his friend to go on ahead without him.
Xuejing gathered his books and slung his bag over one shoulder as he exited the third teaching building, where the affiliated high school students attended classes.
There were three teaching buildings in total, each catering to a different grade level, with twenty classes per grade.
Leaning against the pillar at the entrance of the second teaching building, where the second-year students studied, Xuejing scrolled through some martial arts tutorial videos on his phone while waiting.
His presence was hard to ignore, and the second-year students who passed by couldn't help but spare him a glance or even a longer stare.
It didn't take long for a group of students to emerge, surrounding a wealthy-looking boy whose nose and eyes were wrapped in bandages, making him resemble a mummy. This was none other than Pei Youguang, and his entourage bore similar, though less severe, injuries.
As soon as Pei Youguang spotted Xuejing, he paused momentarily before hurrying over with a servile expression. "Hey, Brother Jing, were you waiting for me?"
Pei Youguang's subservient behavior immediately caught the attention of the second-year students, leaving them stunned.
"Is that Pei Youguang?"
"Yeah, it's him, but he's all wrapped up like a mummy. I almost didn't recognize him."
"Who's that guy? Why does it look like Pei Youguang is... sucking up to him?"
"It's Xuejing from the third year! I saw him at the school gate this morning when Zhou Juncheng called him out. I thought he was going to get beaten up by Pei Youguang, but he doesn't seem to have a scratch on him..."
"You're so dumb. Obviously, Pei Youguang is the one who got beaten up since he's all bandaged up."
"What happened? I thought Pei Youguang practiced martial arts. How did he end up looking like that?"
Murmurs of curiosity filled the air as the students relished the drama unfolding before them. The school bully was not well-liked, so they were delighted to see him seemingly on the receiving end of a beating.
"Serves him right! Always bullying others, but now he's met his match!"
"Finally, someone can put him in his place."
"I'm in the same class as Pei Youguang, and he was still talking about teaching Xuejing a lesson this morning. Apparently, it's because Lin Shiyu likes Xuejing... Look, there's Lin Shiyu now."
As the students spoke, Lin Shiyu, a beautiful girl with long, straight legs accentuated by her school uniform skirt, walked out of the teaching building. Upon seeing Xuejing, her pretty face flushed with embarrassment.
Having confessed to him that very morning only to be rejected, she felt awkward running into him again.
Though Xuejing didn't even spare her a glance, as if he hadn't noticed her at all, which was a bit heartless and made her feel dejected, it also relieved her.
Lin Shiyu quickly grabbed her backpack and, holding her best friend's hand, ran off.
"Brother Jing, you're here to learn about Jinli, right? Come on, let's go to my place. My house is quite big, and we have almost all the equipment you'd find in a martial arts training hall..." Pei Youguang said, gesturing with his remaining unbandaged eye to his lackeys.
One of them immediately stepped forward and offered, "Brother Jing, let me carry your bag for you."
"Sure, let's go," Xuejing agreed with a smile, handing over his bag and following Pei Youguang out of the school.
